Indiana defeats Bearcats, 48-14
Cincinnati, Ohio -- The Indiana University football team completed its non-conference schedule with a 48-14 win over Cincinnati before 32,117 fans at the Queen City's Nippert Stadium. The win improved IU's record to 2-1. Redshirt freshman quarterback Antwaan Randle El continued his impressive play, finishing the game with 299 yards of total offense and 164 all-purpose yards. He was 18-113-1TD rushing, becoming just the fifth quarterback in IU history to surpass the 100-yard rushing mark in a single game. He was also 21-9-186-1TD passing and 1-51-1TD rushing. The IU offense finished with 583 yards of total offense, including 346 rushing yards.
Indiana put 10 points on the board in the first qtr, increasing its first qtr. advantage to 34-7 in three games this season. The Hoosiers opened the scoring just 4:55 into the first quarter when sophomore K Andy Payne connected on the first of his two field goals on the day, this one a 42-ydr. It capped a 10-play, 43-yard drive. The Hoosiers extended their lead to 10-0 with 3:03 remaining in the first quarter when senior fullback Chris Gall (10-47-2TDs rushing) scored the first of his two rushing touchdowns. Cincinnati closed IU's lead to 10-7 just :02 seconds into the second stanza when RB Lloyd Garden capped an 8-play, 71-yard, drive with a 1-yard touchdown run. IU increased its lead less than 1:00 minute later when Randle El threw a lateral to WR O.J. Conner who threw a pass back across the field to Randle El who followed a convoy of blockers down the sideline for a 51-yard touchdown. IU's 10-point advantage did not last long as Cincinnati's Robert Cooper (14-161-1TD rushing) took a handoff and raced 71 yards for a touchdown on Cinci's first play from scrimmage after the IU score. The touchdown was the 17th point scored between the two teams in a 1:02 span.
Indiana was not done as Randle El would score on a 2-yard run with 4:30 remaining in the half and Andy Payne would close the first-half scoring with a career-long 49-yard field goal that have the Hoosiers a 27-14 halftime advantage.
IU would hold Cincinnati scoreless in the second half while scoring 21 points of its own. Browning (3-83-1TD) receiving scored on a 36-yard touchdown reception from Randle El in the third qtr. and Chris Gall and junior college transfer Frankie Franklin capped the scoring with 7 and 32-yard scoring runs, respectively, in the fourth stanza. Indiana's Jabar Robinson, Justin Smith, and Brandon Rodgers tallied interceptions, giving the Hoosiers nine interceptions in three games this season.
Indiana sophomore running back Marcus Floyd posted career rushing highs of 17 carries for 105 yards and IU defensive end Adewale Ogunleye tallied 1 sack, moving him into second place on the IU sack list with 22.5.
