INDIANA HOSTS MICHIGAN IN TELEVISED MATCH

THIS WEEK -- The Hoosiers wrap up an eight-match homestand this weekend, hosting No. 21 Michigan State Friday, Oct. 2, and Michigan Saturday, Oct. 3. Both matches start at 7 p.m., and are held at University Gym (Tenth Street and Highway 46 Bypass). Admission is $4 for adults and $2 for children. Indiana University students are admitted free with a valid ID.
HOOSIERS ON THE TUBE -- Indiana will make its first of two appearances on regional TV this weekend as part of the Big Ten Conference television package. Saturday's match versus Michigan will be broadcast tape delayed Sunday, Oct. 4 at 4 p.m., EST, by Fox Sports Chicago. Dave Loane will call the play-by-play, while Angie Kammer will handle the color analysis. Indiana's second televised match is set for Nov. 13, when the Hoosiers play the Hawkeyes in Iowa City, Iowa.
ABOUT THE HOOSIERS -- Indiana's five-match winning streak was snapped Friday as the Hoosiers dropped their Big Ten season opener to No. 6 Wisconsin 6-15, 12-15, 2-15. On Saturday, IU bounced back to defeat Iowa 15-10, 15-13, 15-12. Rightside hitter Amanda Welter led the Hoosiers over the weekend with 20 kills, 14 digs and four blocks. Middle blocker Laura Mettes also had a strong showing with 17 kills and 10 blocks.
HOOSIERS RECEIVE VOTES -- Indiana received 26 votes to remain just three spots out of the top 25 in the latest USA TODAY/AVCA Coaches Top 25 Poll released Sept. 28. This is the third-straight week for the Hoosiers to receive votes in the national poll. Indiana garnered its first ever national ranking last season when the squad was voted in at No. 25, Sept. 30, 1997.
REGIONAL RANKINGS -- In the inaugural NCAA District 2 Regional rankings released Sept. 23, the Hoosiers were ranked third behind No. 1 Penn State and No. 6 Wisconsin. The third place district ranking is the highest for the Hoosier program. Previously, Indiana was ranked fourth in the regional poll on Sept. 23, 1997 and Nov. 21, 1995. District 2 is made up of 41 teams from the Big Ten Conference, Mid-America Conference, Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and Northeast Conference.
COACH KATIE WEISMILLER -- Katie Weismiller is in her sixth season as Indiana's head coach with an 81-88 (.479) school record and an eight-year career mark of 131-112 (.541). Prior to coming to Indiana, Weismiller spent two years as the assistant coach at Florida where she helped lead the Gators to the school's first Final four appearance in 1992. She began her coaching career at St. Louis University, where she was head coach from 1989-91. There, she guided the Billikens to a 50-24 record, and in 1989, the Midwestern Collegiate Conference Championship.
PLAYING WITH THE BEST -- Ten of the Hoosiers 19 opponents are currently ranked or receiving votes in the USA Today/AVCA Coaches Top 25 Poll. The Hoosiers have already faced No. 6 Wisconsin, No. 8 USC and No. 19 Arizona. Up this week is No. 21 Michigan State.
BIG TEN TOUGHNESS -- Led by 1997 NCAA Division I runner-up Penn State, the Big Ten Conference has six teams voted in the latest USA TODAY/AVCA Top 25 poll, more than any other conference. The Lady Lions are joined in the poll by No. 6 Wisconsin, No. 18 Ohio State, No. 20 Illinois, No. 21 Michigan State and No. 22 Minnesota. Indiana and Northwestern are receiving votes for Top 25 recognition.
VERSUS MICHIGAN STATE -- The Spartans enter Friday's match with an 8-2 overall record and a 1-1 Big Ten mark after opening league play with a loss to Illinois and a win over Purdue last weekend. Senior outside hitter Jenna Wrobel leads the Big Ten in hitting, averaging 5.69 kills per game while carrying a .336 attack percentage. As a team, the Spartans are tough at the net as they average 3.37 blocks per game. Coach Chuck Erbe is in his sixth season with the Spartans and carries a 117-61 school record. The Series: MSU leads the all-time series 22-21. Last season the two teams split play as each school won on their home court.
ON MICHIGAN -- Prior to playing Northwestern Friday evening, the Wolverines are 8-4 overall and 0-2 in the Big Ten. Michigan began its conference season last weekend with losses to Purdue and Illinois. UM sports a balanced attack as five players have registered more than 90 kills this season. Senior outside hitter Karen Chase leads the Wolverine attack, averaging 4.60 kills per game. Michigan is coached by Greg Giovanazzi who is in his seventh season with the program and holds a 100-102 school and career record. The Series: The Hoosiers lead the all-time series 26-14.
FRONT LINE DEFENSE -- Junior Laura Mettes has done a nice job of patrolling the net this season, averaging .88 blocks per game. In Big Ten play she has doubled her effort, averaging 1.67 blocks per game. Against Wisconsin and Iowa, the middle blocker rejected 10 attacks.
SWINGING ON THE RIGHT -- In her new role as starting rightside hitter, sophomore Amanda Welter has continued to improve. Welter led the Hoosiers this past weekend with 20 kills, 14 digs and four blocks. For the season she is averaging 2.69 kills, 1.58 blocks and .61 blocks per game.
LEADING THE WAY -- Junior Ryann Connors currently ranks ninth in the league and leads the Hoosier attack with her 4.11 kills per game average. The outside hitter has registered 20-plus kills in four matches this season and posted a career-high 25 kills in the Hoosiers win over Eastern Washington Sept. 18.
GAL FRIDAY -- For the fourth-straight year, Jen Magelssen has shined as Indiana's all-around player. This season the outside hitter has tallied 105 kills, 13 service aces, 106 digs and 13 blocks.
SPECIAL DELIVERY -- Setter Kristina Sanderson currently ranks sixth in the league, averaging 11.49 assists per game. As the team's quarterback, Sanderson has set the squad to a .241 attack percentage.
TOP OF THE LEADERBOARD -- Senior Jen Magelssen already holds the school record for service aces and digs and is presently in pursuit of the school record for kills. Currently she ranks fifth on the all-time list with 1,177 kills and needs just 204 more to become the program's career leader.
INJURY REPORT -- Sophomore outside hitter Jill Mudge underwent arthoscopic surgery on her left knee Aug. 28, and began practicing with the team last week. Also, freshman outside hitter Katie Klink is out indefinitely following arthoscopic surgery on her right ankle Sept. 16.
