HOOSIERS DEFEAT CHARLESTON 1-0 IN OVERTIME
Bloomington, Ind.-- The Indiana men's soccer team (1-0-0) defeated the College of Charleston (0-1-0) tonight in the 16th annual Indiana Adidas Classic 1-0. After a tight scoreless battle in regulation, Indiana's Yuri Lavrinenko fired a 12-yard kick by assisted by Dema Kovalenko in the 100th minute to collect their 25th straight regular season victory.
Switching Lavrinenko to the midfield position, Coach Yeagley believed the offense began to unite.
"We ended up with Nick (Garcia) at at sweeper and Yuri at midfield," Coach Jerry Yeagley said. " When Yuri was at midfield we really connected better offensively. We were defending fine the other way, but we weren't playing attractive soccer that this group is capable of. Moving Yuri there made a big difference, and now he's going to remain an offensive player."
Although the Hoosiers did not totally dominate the game offensively, IU did have 13 shots compared to College of Charleston's four. In the Cougars four shot attempts, Hoosier T.J. Hannig collected four saves. The Hoosiers also outnumbered the Cougars in corner kicks 12 to 1.
During overtime, the Hoosiers picked up their pace with three shot attempts. In total, Kovalenko led the team with three shots while four Hoosiers had two during the contest.
In the first game, the California nipped Butler 2-1 as Kendall Simmonds scored two goals. The adidas Classic action resumes Saturday at Bill Armstrong Stadium with Butler playing College of Charleston at 5 p.m. In the second game, IU takes on California at 7:30 p.m.
