Hoosiers Compete in Inntowner Invitational at Madison, Wis.
THIS WEEK -- The Hoosiers travel to Madison, Wis., to compete in the Inntowner Invitational Friday and Saturday, Sept. 11-12. Indiana (2-1 overall) begins tournament play against No. 3 Southern California (3-1 overall) Friday, Sept. 11 at 5 p.m., and then meets No. 16 Notre Dame (2-1 overall) Saturday, Sept. 12 at 5 p.m. (All matches are Eastern Daylight Time.)
ABOUT THE HOOSIERS -- The Hoosiers went 2-1 in season opening play last weekend at the University Park Holiday Inn Classic in Fort Collins, Colo. IU defeated Colorado State and Middle Tennessee State but lost to Arizona. The Hoosiers landed two players on the all-tournament team as outside hitter Ryann Connors and setter Kristina Sanderson were recognized for their play. The Hoosiers opened tourney play by withstanding a five-game battle against CSU to win 10-15, 15-8, 15-13, 7-15, 15-13. Junior Ryann Connors led her team with 21 kills, 12 digs and a .415 hitting percentage. Senior Jen Magelssen also tallied double-figures with 14 kills. Against Arizona, the Hoosiers lost 15-10, 11-15, 15-6, 11-15, 11-15. Three players registered double-figure kills including a career-best 13 kills from middle blocker Laura Mettes and a career-high 10 kills from outside hitter Amanda Welter . Senior Katie Parmenter and sophomore Laura Dewitz each recorded career-bests of eight kills apiece in the Hoosiers 15-1, 15-6, 15-3 win over Middle Tennessee State.
COACH KATIE WEISMILLER -- Katie Weismiller begins her sixth season as Indiana's head coach with a 77-86 (.474) school record and an eight-year career mark of 127-110 (.539). Prior to coming to Indiana, Weismiller spent two years as the assistant coach at Florida where she helped lead the Gators to the school's first Final four appearance in 1992. She began her coaching career at St. Louis University, where she was head coach from 1989-91. There, she guided the Billikens to a 50-24 record, and in 1989, the Midwestern Collegiate Conference Championship.
PLAYING WITH THE BEST -- Eleven of the Hoosiers 19 opponents (and four of their first five) are currently ranked or receiving votes in the USA Today/AVCA Coaches Top 25 poll. IU defeated Colorado State, lost to Arizona (No. 25) and face USC (No. 3) and Notre Dame (No. 16) this weekend.
COACHING TIES -- When the Hoosiers meet up with Southern California Friday night the meeting will not only be the first for the two programs but it will also mark the first time USC Head Coach Lisa Love has had to coach against her former star setter - Indiana's very own Head Coach Katie Weismiller . Love formerly coached at the University of Texas-Arlington from 1982-88 where Weismiller served as a player from 1983-86 and as an asst. coach from 1987-88.
ON NO. 3 SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA -- The third-ranked Trojans enter tournament play with a 3-1 overall mark. CSU has posted wins over No. 8 Wisconsin, San Francisco and Sam Houston State, while losing only to No. 2 Long Beach State. Senior outside hitter Jennifer Kessy leads her squad, averaging 4.71 kills per while posting a .346 attack percentage. As a team, the Trojans boast a .299 hitting efficiency while holding their opponents to just a .147 attack percentage. Head Coach Lisa Love is in her 10th season at USC and carries a 184-88 record with the program. The Series: Friday's match will be the first meeting between the two programs.
ON NO. 18 NOTRE DAME -- No. 18 Notre Dame enters the Inntowner Invitational with a 2-1 overall record. The Fighting Irish began the season with wins over Valparaiso and Georgia before losing to Colorado last weekend. Four starters and nine letterwinners return for eighth-year Head Coach Debbie Brown who's team should be led by senior Lindsay Treadwell. Through three matches, the 5-11 middle blocker is averaging 3.36 kills, 2.82 digs and 1.09 blocks per game. The Series: Notre Dame leads the all-time series 6-4. The Hoosiers lost 0-3 to Notre Dame in the two teams last meeting in 1996.
CONNORS' ATTACK -- Junior Ryann Connors earned a spot on the University Park Holiday Inn Classic all-tourney team last weekend for her impressive performance on the court. The 5-11 outside hitter averaged 3.45 kills per game in the three matches which included a team-high 21 kills against Colorado State. For the weekend she posted a .358 hitting percentage with 38 kills, 20 digs and seven blocks.
TOP OF THE LEADERBOARD -- Senior Jen Magelssen has etched her name once again in the record books by tying the school record for career digs this past weekend. The outside hitter already owns the school record for service aces with 161 and now shares the program's dig record of 1,060 digs with former IU standout Lynn Crawley (1991-94). Currently ranked fifth all-time for career kills, Magelssen is just 284 kills shy of taking over the school record for kills.
MIGHTY METTES -- After registering 25 kills and 11 blocks this past weekend in Colorado , Laura Mettes is quickly earning respect in her role at middle blocker Mettes, a junior, posted a career-high 13 kills against Arizona and a season-best six blocks against Colorado State.
HOOSIERS SERVE IT UP -- The Hoosiers proved why they are one of the best serving teams in the league this past weekend, acing 19 serves in three matches for a 1.5 ace per game average.
SWINGING ON THE RIGHT -- Sophomore Amanda Welter has settled in nicely as IU's new right side hitter. Replacing the graduated Julie Flatley, Welter sent home a career-best 10 kills against Arizona along with three service aces, seven digs and four blocks.
INJURY REPORT -- Sophomore outside hitter Jill Mudge underwent arthoscopic surgery on her left knee Aug. 28, and will be sidelined indefinitely. Also, freshman outside hitter Katie Klink will miss match action until further diagnostic testing is completed on her right ankle.
HOOSIER OUTLOOK -- Experience looks to be the key for the Hoosiers in 1998 as 10 letterwinners and all but one starter return. And of the returnees, seven are upperclassmen. Leading the way for IU is outside hitters Ryann Connors and Jen Magelssen . Last season Connors averaged 3.89 kills and 2.52 digs per game while Magelssen averaged 3.03 kills and 2.89 digs per game and led the team from the service line with 47 aces. Also returning for the Hoosiers is setter Kristina Sanderson and middle blockers Melissa Rooney and Cydryce Carter .
NEW FACES -- Indiana welcomed six new faces to the squad this season. The newcomers are: Laurie Gardner (5-9, Fr., S, West Bend, Wis), Katie Klink (5-11, Fr., OH, Milwaukee, Wis.), JoAnne Amstutz (5-6, So., DS, Berne, Ind.), Crecia Keithley (5-4, Fr., DS, Jacksonville, Ill.), Katie Parmenter (5-10, Sr., OH, Vincennes, Ind.) and Emily Swails (5-11, Fr., OH, Iowa City, Iowa).
NEW ON THE COACHING STAFF -- New to the Hoosier coaching ranks this season is two-time Olympian and three-time All-American Elaina Oden . Oden comes to IU after having spent last season as an assistant coach at Notre Dame. Prior to that, Oden played on two NCAA champion squads at the University of the Pacific, was a member of the U.S. women's volleyball national team program from 1986-97 and represented the United States at 15 major international competitions, including the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games.
LOOKING FOR RECORDS -- Both setter Kristina Sanderson and middle blocker Cydryce Carter will be looking to reset their individual school single season records set last year as sophomores. Sanderson put her name in the record books for assists in a single season (1,577) while Carter inked her spot for most block assists in a single season (139).
THROUGH THE TURNSTILE -- Since moving its home matches from Assembly Hall to University Gym in 1996, Hoosier volleyball has become a marquee event in Bloomington. Last season, Indiana set a new school record for attendance with 10,233 fans passing through the gate. In Big Ten competition, the Hoosiers averaged 827 fans per game.
HOOSIERS IN THE BIG TEN -- In the Big Ten Conference's preseason poll announced July 20, the Big Ten Volleyball coaches unanimously selected Penn State first in the 1998 pre-season coaches poll. Closely following PSU was last year's co-champion Wisconsin. Indiana was chosen to finish eighth.
