INDIANA DEFEATS MICHIGAN 77-72 FOR FIRST BIG TEN WIN
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana's women's basketball team handed Michigan its first conference loss of the season Thursday evening, defeating UM 77-72 in Assembly Hall.
Led by Jill Chapman's 29 points and 10 rebounds, the Hoosiers picked up their first Big Ten Conference win of the season and improved to 6-8 overall, 1-2 in Big Ten play while the Wolverines fell to 10-4 overall, 2-1 in the league.
"There was no way we were going to lose that game," said Chapman. "We had worked too hard."
The Hoosiers trailed the Wolverines 35-33 at the half but would not back down even though Michigan went up 43-36 to start the second half. IU battled back to take its first lead 58-57 with 8:10 left on the clock and never trailed again.
Following Chapman in double figure scoring was a 23 point effort by Heather Cassady. Cassady also had six rebounds and three assists in 40 minutes of action. Junior Rachael Honegger contributed four points, two rebounds, five assists and no turnovers in 16 minutes of action off of the bench.
As a team IU shot 44 percent from the field, 50 percent from the 3-point arc and 71 percent from the free throw line. In addition, Indiana collected 22 assists to just nine turnovers.
The Hoosiers will be back in action Sunday, Jan. 9, playing No. 15 Illinois in Champaign, Ill.
