GAME DATA: The Indiana Hoosiers host Northwestern tonight in an early start (6 p.m.). Tonight's game is the first of two games this week for IU. The Hoosiers come into tonight's game 14-5 overall and 1-3 in league play after losing at Ohio State Saturday 73-56.
TELEVISION: The Northwestern game will be broadcast by ESPN Regional. Wayne Larrivee and John Laskowski call the action.
RADIO: Every IU game can be heard on the IU Radio Network. Don Fischer, Bob Hammel, Joe Smith and Norm Ellenberger call the action. The pregame fun begins 40 minutes prior to tipoff.
INDIANA HEAD COACH BOB KNIGHT. . . is college basketball's winningest active head coach with 734 victories (all games at the Division I level). He is just one of 12 NCAA coaches all time to have recorded 700 or more victories. He is in his 28th season as the Indiana head coach and has a record of 632-225 (.737). Knight is in his 34th season as a collegiate head coach and has an overall record of 734-275 (.727). Knight's record in Big Ten play is 335-141 (.704). He has led the Hoosiers to three NCAA titles (1976, 1981 and 1987) and a conference record 11 Big Ten Championships (1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993). He was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame in May of 1991. Knight is 47-3 vs. Northwestern overall and while at Indiana.
THE SERIES: Indiana and Northwestern are meeting for the 134th time. The Hoosiers led the series 95-39 after winning last year's games 76-58 in Evanston and 73-55 in Bloomington. The last Northwestern victory came on January, 11, 1998 in Evanston when Northwestern won 66-64. Since then, IU has won 19 straight contests. The Hoosiers also hold the overall edge in Bloomington with a record of 55-13. The Hoosiers are 25 0 vs. the Wildcats in Assembly Hall.
LAST SEASON'S MEETINGS: Indiana 76, Northwestern 58, Evanston, Jan. 14: Indiana used an early 17-0 run to break open the game and then went on a 18-point road victory in Evanston. The Hoosier had four players in double figures. A.J. Guyton and Luke Recker led the team with 2 points each and Andrae Patterson added 11 and Michael Lewis 10. William Gladness lad the team with 6 rebounds. Indiana also had 24 assists and a season-low 7 turnovers. Indiana registered 8 blocked shots and made 9-18 3-pointers. IU also led Northwestern to an opponents' season-low 22 points.
Indiana 73, Northwestern 55, Bloomington, Feb. 14: Indiana opened up a 33-27 halftime lead to a 60-38 advantage with a 27-11 run to start the second half. The Hoosiers shot only 43.8% in the first half before shooting 65% (13-20) in the second half to break the game open. Indiana finished the game at 51.9% while holding Northwestern to just 33.3% from the field. Andrae Patterson led the Hoosiers with 20 points while A.J. Guyton added 17 and Michael Lewis 14. Luke Recker had a team-high 6 rebounds while Luke Jimenez led the team with a career-high 5 assists.
HOOSIERS IN THE POLLS: The Hoosiers are 20th in this week's ESPN/USA Today and 23rd in the Associated Press rankings.
LAST GAME: (Ohio State 73, Indiana 56): Jon Sanderson scored 6 points in a 9-0 run to start the second half and Indiana never recovered as Ohio State ( stayed perfect at home with a 73-56 victory. Ohio State led 35 30 at the half. After Indiana's Luke Recker missed a 3-pointer, Sanderson was fouled as he hit an 8-foot bank shot in the lane, then added the free throw. Indiana missed its next shot, with Sanderson following by hitting a 3-pointer from the left side. Moments later Scoonie Penn hit another 3 pointer to push the lead to 44-30. The Hoosiers never would get closer than eight points again. A.J. Guyton carried the offensive load for the Hoosiers with 27 points. Recker, Indiana's leading scorer averaging 16.8 points a game, scored his only points with 10:20 left. He was just 1-6 from the field. Jason Singleton scored 17 points, Michael Redd added 14, Penn had 12 and Sanderson 10 for the Buckeyes. Neither team led by more than 4 points until Ohio State pulled away with a 9-0 run midway through the first half. Indiana's Kirk Haston hit a hook shot in the lane to cut the Buckeyes' lead to 21-20 with 8:17 left. The Hoosiers would not score for the next 2:48, missing one shot from the field and turning the ball over on three straight possessions. George Reese hit a free throw and missed the second, but Sanderson tipped it in for a basket. After a turnover, the Buckeyes hit their next three shots. Redd started it with a layup off a backdoor cut with Reese assisting. Redd then scored on a fastbreak layup before Singleton hit a short shot off an inbounds play to make it 30-20. The Hoosiers got as close as 32-28 on Guyton's fourth 3-pointer of the half. Guyton, who had 14 points in the opening half, scored Indiana's first 9 points of the second half. Over the final 4 minutes of the first half and first 7 minutes of the second, Guyton accounted for 12 of the Hoosiers' 14 points. The Buckeyes dominated the boards, 40-27, with Ken Johnson leading the way with 11.
LOTS OF GAMES: The 15 games Indiana played this non-conference season is the most in school history before the Big Ten season. The previous high was 14 set in 1988-89 and 1996-97). The most non-conference games Indiana has ever played in a season is 17 which occurred in 1981, 1989 and 1993.
SLOW BIG TEN START USUALLY MEANS STRONG FINISH: During Coach Knight's tenure at Indiana, the Hoosiers have started the league season 1 3 three previous times. IU came back from those starts to post winning seasons each year. The previous three 1-3 starts came in 1978 (finished 12-6), 1979 (10-8) and 1988 (11-7).
3-GAME LOSING STREAKS A RARITY: During Coach Knight's tenure at Indiana, the Hoosiers have had only nine three-game conference play losing streaks. IU suffered through one in each of the last two years. Indiana comes into tonight's game on a two-game skid.
GUYTON SETS 3-POINT RECORD: A.J. Guyton set a school record with 16 3 point attempts vs. Ohio State which broke the old record of 13. He also tied a personal career-high by making 7 3's vs. the Buckeyes. His 7 3's ties for the fifth-highest mark in school history and was just one off the school record. Along those same lines, Indiana's 26 3-point attempts vs. OSU was the second-highest single-game total in school history.
GUYTON CLOSES IN ON 3-POINT RECORDS: A.J. Guyton's 171-416 career 3 pointers are both the second-highest totals in school history. Brian Evans tops both lists at 186-456.
ON THE DEFENSE: The Hoosiers are holding their opponents to just 63.4 points per game, the lowest opponent average on record since 1983-84 when Indiana allowed 59.1 points a game. The opponents are shooting 40% from the field. That is the lowest opponent field goal shooting percentage for the season since 1966-67 when IU opponents shot 39.6%.
KEY NUMBERS: There are a few numbers that apparently are indicators of IU success. According to the numbers, IU needs to grab the halftime lead, as the Hoosiers are 9-1 when leading after the first 20 minutes (plus they're 1-0 when tied at the half). Conversely, the Hoosiers are 4-4 when trailing at half. Additionally, the Hoosiers are 11-1 when scoring more than 70 points, 6-0 when shooting 50% or better, 7-1 when garnering more rebounds and 14-0 when shooting better than their opponents.
LINEUP WATCH: Bob Knight has used nine different starting lineups this season. Luke Recker and A.J. Guyton have started every game. William Gladness is next at 15. The only players to not start this season have been Luke Jimenez, Tom Geyer and Antwaan Randle El.
STAT SLIDE: Indiana's 1-3 start to the conference season may be attributed to some areas where the team is performing below its seasonal averages. IU is shooting 45.9% overall but just 37.9% in league play. Other areas include 3-point shooting (37.3% overall, 30.3% league), free throw shooting (67.3%, 60%), assists (16.3-12) and points (73.8-60).
DOUBLE YOUR FUN: William Gladness leads the Hoosiers this season with four double-doubles. His most recent came against Ball State with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Kirk Haston has three double-figure point-rebound games including a 10-point, 12-rebound game at Ohio State. Luke Recker had 10 points and 10 assists vs. San Francisco.
RECORDS FALL IN RECENT GAMES: The Hoosiers recent good play has translated into team school records and other marks being set. Indiana's 12 blocks vs. San Francisco is the most in school history (old mark was 11 set twice before). Indiana's 88.9% 3-point field goal percentage vs. San Francisco tied the school record set once before. Indiana's 20 steals vs. Drake is a school record (old mark was 19 set twice before). Indiana's 29 assists vs. San Francisco was the second-highest single game total in school history (30 vs. Northwestern, 1981). Indiana's 66.7% field goal percentage vs. San Francisco (40-60) tied for the eighth-highest mark in school history (set five previous times).
HITTING THE CENTURY MARK: Indiana's consecutive 100+-point games vs. San Francisco and Drake was the sixth time that had happened in school history and the first time since 1993-94. The 56-point win over Drake was the second-largest victory margin in school history (65 vs. Notre Dame, 92-29, 1972). The consecutive 50-point victories was the first time that had happened in school history. It was also the 45th and 46th time a Bob Knight-led Indiana team has cracked the century mark.
DOUBLE DIGIT WINS BEFORE LEAGUE PLAY: Indiana registered double figures in wins before league play for the fifth time in the '90s. The other times this has happened was 10-0 in 1990, 12-0 in 1991, 11-2 in 1993 and 13-1 in 1997.
COMEBACK KIDS: Indiana has had the ability to come back in games this season. The Hoosiers notched their fifth come-from-behind victory as they erased a 4-point halftime deficit vs. Ball State. Indiana's last second victory over Temple was the fourth come-from-behind victory of the season. With 8:42 left, IU was down by 9 (52-43) and with 3:54 left, IU was 6 points down (56-50). They trailed by 19 at the half (45-26) to Indiana State and came back and won 76-70. They trailed by 18 (47-29) with 18:50 to play vs. Kansas State and won 71-70 and they trailed by 11 (45-34) with 17:03 to play vs. Notre Dame and won. IU was down by 9 with 68 seconds to play vs. Kentucky and managed to tie the game and send it into overtime.
WINS AND LOSSES: There have been some interesting differences in the 14 wins and 5 losses this season. IU has shot 48.6% in the wins but just 38.5% in the losses. The Hoosiers have also shot 40.4% in the victories and just 31% in the losses from 3-point range. IU's rebounding margin is +0.6 in the wins but in the losses it drops to -6.8. The Hoosiers also average 24.9 free throw attempts in the wins and just 14.2 in the losses.
MORE WINS AND LOSSES: Beside the team differences there have been some sharp contrasts in individual player stats in the victories and losses. A.J. Guyton is averaging 15.6 points in the wins and just 10.4 in the losses. He is shooting 49.4% in the wins and 31.2% in the losses. Kirk Haston is 80.6% from the line in wins and just 30% in losses.
FROM THE FIELD: The Hoosiers have struggled shooting in Big Ten play as their percentage stands at 37.9%. IU has shot less than 44% in each of the last five games after a stretch of four consecutive games above 50%. This stretch includes the first time IU has shot 40% or less in four consecutive games this season. Indiana has shot 50% or better six times. Indiana was the top shooting team in the Big Ten last season at 49.1% but comes into tonight's game shooting 45.9%. When the Hoosiers shoot well they win as the team has outshot its opponents in each victory.
LONG RANGERS: As with the overall field goal shooting, 3-point shooting has also been slipping. The Hoosiers have made just 23-76 3-pointers in league play. The Hoosiers have averaged just 5.8 a game during this stretch. The Hoosiers have shot better than 40% six times this season but have not done so in any of the last five games (longest span of the season). IU has been under 36% from long range nine times this season. Indiana's 27 3-point attempts against Temple is a school record. The Hoosiers also tied a season-high with 9 3-pointers vs. the Owls.
CHARITY TOSSES: Indiana's free throw shooting is also off as they have made just 45-75 (60%) in Big Ten games. The Hoosiers are shooting just 67.3% from the line on the season and have not shot better than 70% in nine of the last 12 games. Over the years one of Indiana's keys to success has been making more free throws than its opponents attempt. This year IU has made 282 but the opponents have attempted 323.
BOARD REPORT: Indiana was outrebounded by a -13 margin at Ohio State. That is the largest rebounding deficit of the season. The Hoosiers had a season-high 22 offensive rebounds vs. Michigan but than were able to grab just a conference season-low 9 at OSU.
ASSIST ANGLE: The Hoosiers are averaging just 12 assists per game in league play compared to 16.3 overall. IU has not had over 15 in any of the conference games after accomplishing that 11 times in non-conference play. IU has posted at least 20 assists three different times this season. Indiana had an assist on 64.6% of their field goals last season but are at 61.8% this year. Indiana has tallied more assists than their opponents 12 times this season. The Hoosiers have had only six games this season where they have had more turnovers than assists.
TURNOVER TALE: The Hoosiers are 12-3 when they commit the same or less number of turnovers as their opponent. IU has had 67 turnovers in league play which includes a season-high 21 at Ohio State. The Hoosiers have had less than 15 turnovers in only one of the league games after doing so in 10 non-conference games. This year the team is averaging 14.4 miscues per game. Last year it was 15.3 per game.
A STEAL OF A TIME: Indiana's defense has been good and one of those indicators is the team's total of 183 steals (9.6 per game). Last year the team averaged just over 7 a contest. Indiana has had 10 games in which it has registered at least 9 steals and eight games in double figures. The Hoosiers set a school record with 20 vs. Drake. At the current pace at almost 10 a game, the Hoosiers would easily break the school record of 250 set in 1992.
ON THE DEFENSE: The Hoosiers have held 10 opponents under 40% from the field this year after doing so only 8 times all of last season. However, three of the league opponents have been above 40%. The Hoosiers went through one stretch this season where they allowed no more than 10 field goals in six of seven consecutive halves (second half of Indiana State game through Utah game). Indiana has also allowed single figures in field goals in 11 halves. IU's opponents come into tonight's game shooting 40% from the field.
POINT PRODUCTION: Indiana is averaging just 60 points in conference games after averaging 90.2 points per game in the five previous game. IU's scoring average in league play is 13.8 points less than its season total of 73.8. The Hoosiers scored 67 points in the second half vs. USF which was more points than the team has scored in seven games this season. Indiana has managed to score 80 or more points six times this season. When the Hoosiers do score 80 or more points it usually means a victory. During Coach Knight's 28 years the Hoosiers are 305-18 when scoring 80 or more, 143-4 when scoring 90 or more and 46-0 when scoring 100 or more points.
BLOCK PARTY: After registering a school record 12 blocks vs. USF, Indiana has had just 17 in the last six games. The 12 blocks was only the seventh time in school history an Indiana team has registered double figures in blocks. Larry Richardson leads the team with 17. The Hoosiers are averaging 3.6 blocks per game after averaging 3.9 a year ago.
BIG WINNERS: When the Hoosiers win they usually have a tendency to win big. Last season they won 13 games by 11 or more points and 19 contests by 6 or more points. This season the margin of victory stands at 18.8 points per game.
DID YOU KNOW... over the last eight years the Hoosiers have led the Big Ten in scoring? During this span IU has averaged 79.1 points per game in conference play and have finished in the top half of the league in scoring every season.
ONE OF THE TOPS IN THE NATION: During the 1990's Indiana has been one of the top teams in college basketball. The Hoosiers have won 214 games this decade which makes them one of only 13 teams to have won 200 or more games during this span.
HOOSIERS IN ASSEMBLY HALL: The Hoosiers are 336-44 (.884) in Assembly Hall including a 200-37 (.843) record in Big Ten games. Since the beginning of the 1990-91 season the Hoosiers are 102-11 (.903) in Assembly Hall. Indiana is also 64-24 (.724) vs. ranked teams in the building.
