HOOSIERS FALL TO BUCKEYES
Late run seals it for Big Ten leaders
Bloomington, Ind--A late 14-3 run propelled the Ohio State Buckeyes to a 78-60 Big Ten Women's Basketball victory over the Indiana Hoosiers tonight at Assembly Hall.
Junior forward Marrita Porter led the Ohio State charge with 21 points as the 17th ranked Buckeyes improved to 12-3 overall and remain in first place in the Big Ten at 5-0. Indiana (12-8, 1-5 11th) was led by the 17 points and 14 rebounds of freshman center Jill Chapman.
Indiana cut the lead to 64-57 on two Kristi Green free throws with just over four minutes remaining but the Buckeyes pulled away from there. Following two Porter free throws, senior forward Larecha Jones scored OSU's next seven points to put them up 15 with under two minutes to play.
Ohio State head coach Beth Burns said the game was closer than the final score. "We knew Indiana would be a very aggressive team and it was a physical game," Burns said. "The score was not indicitive of the game."
Indiana head coach Jim Izard said missed opportunities was a key factor in the loss. "Both teams played with a high level of intensity," Izard said. "The key was early in the second half we kept turning the ball over and missed some transition opportunities.
The Buckeyes led by six at the half and extended that lead to 12 on guard Lauren Shenk's three pointer from the left corner with 14 minutes remaining. The Hoosiers made an 8-0 run capped by two Kay Morgan free throws which cut the lead to 50-44. Indiana would get no closer as Ohio State ran off an 8-0 run of their own to put the lead at 58-44 with under eight minutes to play.
The Hoosiers are back in action Sunday afternoon at 2p.m. (CST) against the Minnesota Golden Gophers at Williams Arena in Minneapolis.
