GAME DATA: The Indiana Hoosiers play at Purdue this afternoon. Today's game is the second of the week for IU and the fourth conference road game . The Hoosiers come into today's game 15-5 overall and 2-3 in league play after defeating Northwestern Wednesday 81-78.
TELEVISION:: The Purdue game will be broadcast by CBS. Sean McDonough and Billy Packer call the action.

INDIANA HEAD COACH BOB KNIGHT:. . . is college basketball's winningest active head coach with 735 victories (all games at the Division I level). He is just one of 12 NCAA coaches all-time to have recorded 700 or more victories. He is in his 28th season as the Indiana head coach and has a record of 633-225 (.738). Knight is in his 34th season as a collegiate head coach and has an overall record of 735-275 (.728). Knight's record in Big Ten play is 336-141 (.704). He has led the Hoosiers to three NCAA titles (1976, 1981 and 1987) and a conference record 11 Big Ten Championships (1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993). He was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame in May of 1991. Knight is 29-27 vs. Purdue overall and 28-26 while at Indiana.
THE SERIES:: Indiana and Purdue are meeting for the 174th time. The Boilermakers led the series 102-71 after winning two of three last year. IU won 94-88 in Bloomington then Purdue won 94-89 in West Lafayette and 76-71 at the Big Ten Tournament in Chicago. Purdue has also won six of the last seven meetings and the last five in Mackey Arena. Indiana's last win in Mackey was in 1993 (74-65). Purdue leads the all-time series in games played in West Lafayette 65-20. Purdue is the only Big Ten team to lead a series against Indiana.
HOOSIERS IN THE POLLS:: The Hoosiers are 20th in this week's ESPN/USA Today and 23rd in the Associated Press rankings.
ROAD WARRIORS AND TRYING TO BEAT THE WEATHER: Although the conference season is a little more than two weeks old, after today's game Indiana will have already made half of its conference road trips. The Hoosiers play four of their first six away from home and will play six of their first nine on the road by the end of January. Indiana, Illinois and Iowa are the only conference teams playing four of their first six on the road. In all, Indiana has played only 8 games (out of 21) in Assembly Hall in 1998-99. Due to the adverse weather conditions in the midwest over the last two weeks, Indiana drew only 7,249 for its game vs. Illinois and 10,249 against Northwestern. For both games, however, all tickets were sold.
LAST GAME: (Indiana 81, Northwestern 78):: Indiana returned to Assembly Hall and survived a big second-half comeback to beat Northwestern 81-78. It was the Hoosiers' 29th consecutive victory at home against Northwestern over the past 31 years. Indiana led by 5 points at halftime and built its lead to 16 midway through the second half before the rally by Northwestern. Evan Eschmeyer had 27 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists to lead the Wildcats and hit two free throws that pulled the Wildcats within 74-70 with 4:43 to go. Nate Pomeday added two more free throws, and Northwestern tied the game with 3:30 remaining on a basket by Tavaras Hardy that completed a 24-8 run. The Hoosiers regained the lead on a 3-pointer by William Gladness, and Luke Recker's final basket put Indiana up 79-74. After offsetting baskets, Northwestern had a final chance to tie when Gladness missed as the shot clock ran out with 12 seconds to go. But David Newman missed a 3-pointer, and Recker got the rebound as the game ended. Recker led IU with a season-high tying 28 points. A.J. Guyton added 18 points for the Hoosiers, while Michael Lewis finished with 14 and Gladness 13. Hardy and Sean Wink each had 13 points for the Wildcats. Northwestern stayed close in the first half with 3 pointers. Eight of the Wildcats' 11 field goals in the first half were 3s, including one by Steve Lepore that stopped a 16-3 Indiana run midway through the half. A 10-0 run, including 3-point plays by Lewis and Recker, helped the Hoosiers to their biggest lead, 66-50 with 11 minutes left. A 3-pointer by Wink and three straight baskets by Eschmeyer then started the Northwestern comeback.
LAST SEASON'S MEETINGS:: Indiana 94, Purdue 88, Bloomington, Jan. 18: Indiana used a 22-8 second half run to break a 47-47 tie and then held on for the 6-point victory. The victory broke a four-game losing streak to Purdue. The Hoosiers took a 16-point lead before having the Boilers cut it to 4 (90-86) with 1:27 to play. Down the stretch, William Gladness had a slam dunk and Luke Recker made two free throws to seal the victory. Recker led the team with career-highs of 27 points and 12 rebounds. A.J. Guyton and Gladness each added 21. Indiana shot 57.6% for the game and made 21 of 23 free throws.
Purdue 94, Indiana 89, West Lafayette, Feb. 10: Indiana battled back from a 13-point second half deficit to tie the game at 74 with 6:14 to play. IU then trailed 81-80 with 3:33 to play. Chad Austin hit a 3-pointer to make it a 4-point game and the Hoosiers could get no closer than 3 the rest of the way. Rob Turner had a chance to tie the game with a 3-pointer with 8 seconds remaining but the shot missed and Purdue made two free throws for the 5-point victory. Andrae Patterson scored a season and conference career-high 27 points which included 21 in the second half. William Gladness led the team with 8 rebounds. Indiana shot 55.9% from the field and held Purdue to just 39.2%. However, Purdue made 32-39 free throws to Indiana's 15-19.
Purdue 76, Indiana 71, Chicago, Mar. 6:: In a classic game from the start, the game featured 18 lead changes and was tied 14 times before Purdue won 76-71. Luke Recker tied the game at 71 with a 3-pointer with 2:03 to play. It was then all free throws for Purdue as they went 5-6 down the stretch to win the game. Andrae Patterson led Indiana with 24 points and 8 rebounds. The Hoosiers shot 45.2% and registered 22 assists but made only 6-10 free throws. Purdue made 17-24 free throws and outrebounded Indiana 44-30.
GUYTON AND RECKER ­ IMPORTANT TO THE CAUSE:: A.J. Guyton and Luke Recker combined for 46 points to lead the Hoosiers to victory over Northwestern. That was the second-highest scoring game for the tandem in their year and a half together (48 vs. Purdue last year is tops). The pair has combined to score over 40 points seven times in their careers including three times this season (41 vs. UAB, 44 at Notre Dame and vs. Northwestern). IU has won all seven of those games. They have also combined to score 30 or more points 24 times and Indiana is 20-4 in those games since the start of last season. In games they haven't combined to score 30 or more the Hoosiers are 15-13.
SOMETHING HE HASN'T DONE BEFORE:: William Gladness connected on his first career 3-pointer vs. Northwestern. That was also just his second attempt from long range while at IU. The 3-pointer was also the first attempt and make from long range from any of the four IU inside players ­ Gladness, Kirk Haston, Lynn Washington and Larry Richardson ­ this season.
DOING WELL AGAINST THE BEST:: Northwestern came into Wednesday's game allowing opponents 34.1 percent field goal accuracy ­ the best in the NCAA ­ but the Hoosiers hit 58.8%, including 68% in the second half.
BALANCED ATTACK BODES WELL:: Indiana had four players reach double figures in points vs. Northwestern. That is usually a good sign of success for the Hoosiers as they have won all seven games this season when this has happened. Wednesday's effort was the first time in conference play this had taken place.
LOTS OF GAMES:: The 15 games Indiana played this non-conference season is the most in school history before the Big Ten season. The previous high was 14 set in 1988-89 and 1996-97). The most non-conference games Indiana has ever played in a season is 17 which occurred in 1981, 1989 and 1993.
AGAINST THE BEST:: Indiana is 2-4 this season against teams that were ranked when the Hoosiers played them. Indiana defeated Utah and Temple while losing to Syracuse., Kentucky, Iowa and Ohio State. All four of those losses came on the raod.
SLOW BIG TEN START USUALLY MEANS STRONG FINISH:: During Coach Knight's tenure at Indiana, the Hoosiers have started the league season 1 3 three previous times. IU came back from those starts to post winning seasons each year. The previous three 1-3 starts came in 1978 (finished 12-6), 1979 (10-8) and 1988 (11-7).
GUYTON SETS 3-POINT RECORD:: A.J. Guyton set a school record with 16 3 point attempts vs. Ohio State breaking the old record of 13. He also tied a personal career-high by making 7 3's vs. the Buckeyes. His 7 3's ties for the fifth-highest mark in school history and was just one off the school record. Along those same lines, Indiana's 26 3-point attempts vs. OSU was the second-highest single-game total in school history.
GUYTON CLOSES IN ON 3-POINT RECORDS:: A.J. Guyton's 171-419 career 3 pointers are both the second-highest totals in school history. Brian Evans tops both lists at 186-456.
ON THE DEFENSE:: The Hoosiers are holding their opponents to just 64.2 points per game, the lowest opponent average on record since 1983-84 when Indiana allowed 59.1 points a game. The opponents are shooting 40% from the field. That is the lowest opponent field goal shooting percentage for the season since 1991-92 when IU opponents shot 40.7%.
KEY NUMBERS:: There are a few numbers that apparently are indicators of IU success. According to the numbers, IU needs to grab the halftime lead, as the Hoosiers are 10-1 when leading after the first 20 minutes (plus they're 1-0 when tied at the half). Conversely, the Hoosiers are 4-4 when trailing at half. Additionally, the Hoosiers are 12-1 when scoring more than 70 points, 7-0 when shooting 50% or better, 7-1 when garnering more rebounds and 15-0 when shooting better than their opponents.
LINEUP WATCH:: Bob Knight has used nine different starting lineups this season. Luke Recker and A.J. Guyton have started every game. William Gladness is next at 16. The only players to not start this season have been Luke Jimenez, Tom Geyer and Antwaan Randle El.
DOUBLE YOUR FUN:: William Gladness leads the Hoosiers this season with four double-doubles. Kirk Haston is next with three double-figure point rebound games. Luke Recker had 10 points and 10 assists vs. San Francisco. Michael Lewis had the most recent one with season-highs of 14 points and 11 assists vs. Northwestern.
RECORDS FALL IN RECENT GAMES:: The Hoosiers recent good play has translated into team school records and other marks being set. Indiana's 12 blocks vs. San Francisco is the most in school history (old mark was 11 set twice before). Indiana's 88.9% 3-point field goal percentage vs. San Francisco tied the school record set once before. Indiana's 20 steals vs. Drake is a school record (old mark was 19 set twice before). Indiana's 29 assists vs. San Francisco was the second-highest single game total in school history (30 vs. Northwestern, 1981). Indiana's 66.7% field goal percentage vs. San Francisco (40-60) tied for the eighth-highest mark in school history (set five previous times).
HITTING THE CENTURY MARK:: Indiana's consecutive 100+-point games vs. San Francisco and Drake was the sixth time that had happened in school history and the first time since 1993-94. The 56-point win over Drake was the second-largest victory margin in school history (65 vs. Notre Dame, 92-29, 1972). The consecutive 50-point victories was the first time that had happened in school history. It was also the 45th and 46th time a Bob Knight-led Indiana team has cracked the century mark.
DOUBLE DIGIT WINS BEFORE LEAGUE PLAY:: Indiana registered double figures in wins before league play for the fifth time in the '90s. The other times this has happened was 10-0 in 1990, 12-0 in 1991, 11-2 in 1993 and 13-1 in 1997.
COMEBACK KIDS:: Indiana has had the ability to come back in games this season. The Hoosiers notched their fifth come-from-behind victory as they erased a 4-point halftime deficit vs. Ball State. Indiana's last second victory over Temple was the fourth come-from-behind victory of the season. With 8:42 left, IU was down by 9 (52-43) and with 3:54 left, IU was 6 points down (56-50). They trailed by 19 at the half (45-26) to Indiana State and came back and won 76-70. They trailed by 18 (47-29) with 18:50 to play vs. Kansas State and won 71-70 and they trailed by 11 (45-34) with 17:03 to play vs. Notre Dame and won. IU was down by 9 with 68 seconds to play vs. Kentucky and managed to tie the game and send it into overtime.
WINS AND LOSSES:: There have been some interesting differences in the 15 wins and 5 losses this season. IU has shot 49.2% in the wins but just 38.5% in the losses. The Hoosiers have also shot 40.2% in the victories and just 31% in the losses from 3-point range. IU's rebounding margin is +0.6 in the wins but in the losses it drops to -6.8. The Hoosiers also average 24.5 free throw attempts in the wins and just 14.2 in the losses.
MORE WINS AND LOSSES:: Beside the team differences there have been some sharp contrasts in individual player stats in the victories and losses. A.J. Guyton is averaging 15.7 points in the wins and just 10.4 in the losses. He is shooting 50% in the wins and 31.2% in the losses. Kirk Haston is 80.6% from the line in wins and just 30% in losses.
FROM THE FIELD:: The Hoosiers broke out of their shooting slump vs. Northwestern as they connected on 30-51 for a 58.8% game. That was the first time IU has been over 50% in league play and broke a streak of five games below 50%. The effort vs. NU also included a 68% second half (17 25) which is the second best half of the season. Indiana has shot 50% or better seven times. Indiana was the top shooting team in the Big Ten last season at 49.1% but comes into today's game shooting 46.4%. When the Hoosiers shoot well they win as the team has outshot its opponents in each victory.
LONG RANGERS:: IU also improved its 3-point shooting vs. Northwestern as they made 4-11. That percentage (36.4) was the second best in league play and the highest in the last four games. The Hoosiers have shot better than 40% six times this season but have not done so in any of the last six games (longest span of the season). IU has been under 36% from long range nine times this season. Indiana's 27 3-point attempts against Temple is a school record. The Hoosiers also tied a season-high with 9 3-pointers vs. the Owls.
CHARITY TOSSES:: Indiana was hitting just 60% from the line before setting a season high of 85% by making 17-20 vs. Northwestern. That was only the second time this season IU has been above 80% from the line. The Hoosiers are shooting just 68.1% from the line on the season and have not shot better than 70% in nine of the last 13 games. Over the years one of Indiana's keys to success has been making more free throws than its opponents attempt. This year IU has made 299 but the opponents have attempted 337.
BOARD REPORT:: The Hoosiers tied a season-low with just 26 rebounds (including a season-low 2 offensive boards) vs. Northwestern. However, with both teams shooting over 50%, the final rebounding totals were tied. IU has won the battle of the boards just once in league play and have a rebounding deficit of -2.8 in league play.
ASSIST ANGLE:: The Hoosiers posted a conference season-high 17 assists vs. Northwestern after averaging just 12 per game in the first four league games. IU has posted at least 20 assists three times this season. Indiana had an assist on 64.6% of their field goals last season but are at 61.5% this year. Indiana has tallied more assists than their opponents 12 times this season. The Hoosiers have had only six games this season where they have had more turnovers than assists.
TURNOVER TALE:: The Hoosiers are 13-3 when they commit the same or less number of turnovers as their opponent. IU has averaged 16 turnovers a game in league which is above the season average of 14.3 (15.3 last season). The Hoosiers have had less than 15 turnovers in only two of the league games after doing so in 10 non-conference games.
A STEAL OF A TIME:: Indiana's defense has been good and one of those indicators is the team's total of 190 steals (9.5 per game). Last year the team averaged just over 7 a contest. Indiana has had 10 games in which it has registered at least 9 steals and eight games in double figures. The Hoosiers set a school record with 20 vs. Drake. At the current pace the Hoosiers would easily break the school record of 250 set in 1992.
ON THE DEFENSE:: The Hoosiers have held 10 opponents under 40% from the field this year after doing so only 8 times all of last season. However, four of the league opponents have been above 40%. The Hoosiers went through one stretch this season where they allowed no more than 10 field goals in six of seven consecutive halves (second half of Indiana State game through Utah game). Indiana has also allowed single figures in field goals in 11 halves. IU's opponents come into today's game shooting 40.5% from the field.
POINT PRODUCTION: Indiana scored a conference season-high 81 points vs. Northwestern. That was the first time in five games IU was able to score more than 72 points. IU's scoring average in league play is 10 points less than its season total of 74.2. The Hoosiers scored 67 points in the second half vs. USF which was more points than the team has scored in seven games this season. Indiana has managed to score 80 or more points seven times this season. When the Hoosiers do score 80 or more points it usually means a victory. During Coach Knight's 28 years the Hoosiers are 306-18 when scoring 80 or more, 143-4 when scoring 90 or more and 46 0 when scoring 100 or more points.
BLOCK PARTY: After registering a school record 12 blocks vs. USF, Indiana has had just 19 in the last seven games. The 12 blocks was only the seventh time in school history an Indiana team has registered double figures in blocks. Larry Richardson leads the team with 17. The Hoosiers are averaging 3.5 blocks per game after averaging 3.9 a year ago.
BIG WINNERS:When the Hoosiers win they usually have a tendency to win big. Last season they won 13 games by 11 or more points and 19 contests by 6 or more points. This season the margin of victory stands at 17.8 points per game.
DID YOU KNOW... over the last eight years the Hoosiers have led the Big Ten in scoring? During this span IU has averaged 79.1 points per game in conference play and have finished in the top half of the league in scoring every season.
ONE OF THE TOPS IN THE NATION: During the 1990's Indiana has been one of the top teams in college basketball. The Hoosiers have won 214 games this decade which makes them one of only 13 teams to have won 200 or more games during this span.
HOOSIERS IN ASSEMBLY HALL: The Hoosiers are 337-44 (.884) in Assembly Hall including a 201-37 (.844) record in Big Ten games. Since the beginning of the 1990-91 season the Hoosiers are 103-11 (.904) in Assembly Hall. Indiana is also 64-24 (.724) vs. ranked teams in the building.
