HOOSIERS DEFEAT MINNESOTAMINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Indiana's women's basketball team picked up its second Big Ten win of the season Sunday afternoon, defeating Minnesota 80-66 in the Sports Pavilion.
With the win, Indiana improves to 13-8 overall, 2-5 in the Big Ten, while Minnesota falls to 7-10 overall, 2-5 in the league.
The game resembled a shootout as the two teams combined for 19 3-pointers, including 10 by the Hoosiers. Indiana just missed tying the school record for baskets from behind the arc (12) but did manage to reset the school record for 3-point field goal percentage in a game, connecting on 10-15 3-pointers for an impressive 67 percent.
After trailing 2-4 at the start, the Hoosiers threatened to runaway with the game as Indiana went on an 18-0 run while the Gophers were held scoreless for 9:15. The score was 20-4 before Minnesota was able topick up a field goal with 9:43 remaining in the first half. Indiana then maintained the lead, heading into the lockerroom with the 37-20 advantage.
The Hoosiers quickly saw their 17-point halftime lead evaporate as the Gophers went on an 18-4 run. Minnesota pulled as close as three points at 43-40 before the Hoosiers ran off their own 17-5 run which was sparked by a field goal and a 3-point basket from Heather Cassady off of the bench. By the 8:40 mark, though, the Hoosier had restored their lead back to 15 points at 58-43. From there, the Hoosiers hung on to win 80-66.
Four players scored in double-digits, led by 19 points apiece from both Jill Chapman and Cindy Kerns. Dani Thrush scored 12 of her 14 points in the first half, while Kristi Green netted 12 points. Chapman also led IU off the glass with 13 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the year.
As a team, IU shot 48 percent from the field and 80 percent from the free throw line but were outrebounded 42-38 on the glass.
"I thought we shot the ball very well today," said Coach Jim Izard. "We came out and shot the ball which is something that we haven't done well lately. I am really pleased with our focus in todayss game and how we regrouped after Friday night's loss to Ohio State."
