GAME #22 FACTS: Michigan State (15-4, 4-1) vs. Indiana (16-5, 3-3). Sunday (Jan. 24). Assembly Hall (17,357), Bloomington, Ind. Game time is 4 p.m.
GAME DATA: The Indiana Hoosiers play Michigan State this afternoon. Today's game is the first for the Hoosiers in eight days. It also starts a stretch of four games for IU against league teams they only play once this conference season (Minnesota, Penn State and Wisconsin are the other teams). The Hoosiers come into today's game 16-5 overall and 3-3 in league play after defeating Purdue last Saturday 87-76.
TELEVISION: The Michigan State game will be broadcast by CBS. Verne Lundquist and Clark Kellogg calls the action.
RADIO: Every IU game can be heard on the IU Radio Network. Don Fischer, Bob Hammel, Joe Smith and Norm Ellenberger call the action. The pregame fun begins 40 minutes prior to tipoff.
INDIANA HEAD COACH BOB KNIGHT. . . is college basketball's winningest active head coach with 736 victories (all games at the Division I level). He is just one of 12 NCAA coaches all-time to have recorded 700 or more victories. He is in his 28th season as the Indiana head coach and has a record of 634-225 (.738). Knight is in his 34th season as a collegiate head coach and has an overall record of 736-275 (.728). Knight's record in Big Ten play is 337-141 (.705). He has led the Hoosiers to three NCAA titles (1976, 1981 and 1987) and a conference record 11 Big Ten Championships (1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993). He was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame in May of 1991. Knight is 30-21 vs. Michigan State overall and while at Indiana.
THE SERIES: Indiana and Michigan State are meeting for the 90th time. The Hoosiers led the series 56-33 after Michigan State won last year's only meeting 84-66 in East Lansing. This is a series that has held true to form over the last six years as the home team has won 11 games. IU last win came on Jan. 2, 1997 in Bloomington (77-65). The Hoosiers have won the last six games in Assembly Hall and are 19-6 all-time vs. the Spartans in Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers also lead the series 35-8 in games played in Bloomington.
LAST SEASON'S MEETING: Michigan State 84, Indiana 66, East Lansing, Jan. 28: Michigan State took control of the game in the second half with a 19 3 run as it went on to an 18-point victory. Michigan State shot 51.3% while holding the Hoosiers to 40% from the field. The Spartans also outrebounded the Hoosiers by a 48-30 margin which included 22 offensive rebounds and 30 second chance points. Luke Recker led the Hoosiers with 16 points while Larry Richardson added 11. William Gladness was the IU rebounder with 6.
HOOSIERS IN THE POLLS: The Hoosiers are 18th in this week's ESPN/USA Today and Associated Press rankings.
LAST GAME: (Indiana 87, Purdue 76): Luke Recker scored 24 points as Indiana picked up a much-needed road win in Big Ten Conference play with an 87-76 victory over archrival Purdue. A.J. Guyton added 21 points for the Hoosiers, who won on the road for the first time in four conference games. The Hoosiers won for the first time since 1993 in West Lafayette, snapping a five-game losing streak at Mackey Arena. Jaraan Cornell scored 18 points and Greg McQuay added 17 for Purdue, which had a 16 game winning streak at Mackey Arena come to an end. Purdue took its only lead on a basket by Brian Cardinal 15 seconds into the game, but Recker had seven points in a 21-6 tear. The Hoosiers opened a 21-8 lead on a three-pointer by Guyton with 13:24 to go in the first half. Guyton had a pair of jumpers to keep the lead at 26-13, but Purdue put together at 18-5 burst and pulled within 36-31 on a layup by Cameron Stephens with 2:03 to go in the first half. Indiana led 58-47 with 10:49 left on a jumper by Michael Lewis, but McQuay had 7 points in a 15-7 spurt. The Boilermakers closed within 65-62 on his layup with 4:44 remaining. Recker countered by making 3-4 free throws in the next 44 seconds before Guyton hit a 3 pointer to give Indiana a 71-62 advantage with 3:06 to play. Purdue got no closer than 7 points thereafter. Lewis had another solid outing, totaling 11 points and 9 assists. William Gladness and Lynn Washington each had double-doubles for the Hoosiers, with Gladness totaling 13 points and 10 rebounds. Indiana shot 16-26 (62%) from the field in the second half and 53% (32-60) overall. Rob Turner was the only reserve to see significant action and hit all three shots he took in 16 minutes, while Kirk Haston played four minutes and Luke Jimenez one. The Boilermakers, who shot only 40 percent (29-72), including a woeful 3-18 from three-point range.
RECKER NAMED BIG TEN PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Recker put up back-to-back 20-plus point games and led Indiana to wins over Northwestern and No. 13 Purdue. Against the Wildcats, Recker had 28 points, including a 10-16 (.620) performance from the field. He also converted 86% of his free throws (6-7) and dished out three assists. In the win over the Boilermakers, Recker tallied 24 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out three assists. He also shot over 56 percent from the field (9-16). On the week he converted 59 percent (19-32) of his shots from the field and 44 percent of his throws from beyond the arc (4-9). Recker is sixth in the Conference in all games scoring (17.0 ppg) and fourth in League-game scoring (19.3 ppg).
MINI STREAK: The Hoosiers came into today's game on a modest two-game conference winning streak which is their longest of the season. The last time IU won as many as three consecutive league games was last season when they won five in a row in January.
GUYTON AND RECKER ­ IMPORTANT TO THE CAUSE: A.J. Guyton and Luke Recker combined for 46 points in the victory over Northwestern and then had 45 in the win at Purdue. The 46-point effort was the second-highest scoring game for the tandem in their year and a half together (48 vs. Purdue last year is tops). The pair has combined to score over 40 points eight times in their careers including four times this season (41 vs. UAB, 44 at Notre Dame and vs. Northwestern and at Purdue). IU has won all eight of those games. They have also combined to score 30 or more points 25 times and Indiana is 21-4 in those games since the start of last season. In games they haven't combined to score 30 or more the Hoosiers are 15-13.
HOOSIERS HIT THEIR STRIDE IN LAST TWO GAMES: Indiana evened its record in league play at 3-3 with two good performances last week. The Hoosiers shot 55.9% from the field, 39.1% from 3-point range and 76.1% from the line. They also had 37 assists and only 24 turnovers. The team also averaged 84 points per game.
GLADNESS AND WASHINGTON FORM FORMIDABLE INSIDE TANDEM: William Gladness and Lynn Washington helped the Hoosiers to victory over Purdue by each registering a double-double. Gladness had 13 points and 10 rebounds while Washington had career-highs of 12 points and 10 rebounds. That was the first time in 79 games (Dec. 23, 1996 vs. Butler) that two Hoosiers registered double-doubles in the same game.
BALANCED ATTACK BODES WELL: All five starters reached double figures in points vs. Purdue. That is usually a good sign of success for the Hoosiers as they have won all eight games this season when they have at least four players score in double figures. The last two games is the first time in league play this has taken place.
HOOSIERS TOPS IN THE BIG TEN IN THE 90s: Through this week's conference action, Indiana has won 109 conference games this decade. That ties for the most wins in league play during this span (Purdue is other school). Indiana is one of only four schools to win 100 or more conference games this decade (Michigan and Michigan State are the others).
LOTS OF GAMES: The 15 games Indiana played this non-conference season is the most in school history before the Big Ten season. The previous high was 14 set in 1988-89 and 1996-97). The most non-conference games Indiana has ever played in a season is 17 which occurred in 1981, 1989 and 1993.
AGAINST THE BEST: Indiana is 3-4 this season against teams that were ranked when the Hoosiers played them. Indiana defeated Utah, Temple and Purdue while losing to Syracuse, Kentucky, Iowa and Ohio State. All four of those losses came on the road.
SLOW BIG TEN START USUALLY MEANS STRONG FINISH: During Coach Knight's tenure at Indiana, the Hoosiers have started the league season 1 3 three previous times. IU came back from those starts to post winning seasons each year. The previous three 1-3 starts came in 1978 (finished 12-6), 1979 (10-8) and 1988 (11-7).
GUYTON SETS 3-POINT RECORD: A.J. Guyton set a school record with 16 3 point attempts vs. Ohio State breaking the old record of 13. He also tied a personal career-high by making 7 3's vs. the Buckeyes. His 7 3's ties for the fifth-highest mark in school history and was just one off the school record. Along those same lines, Indiana's 26 3-point attempts vs. OSU was the second-highest single-game total in school history.
GUYTON CLOSES IN ON 3-POINT RECORDS: A.J. Guyton's 173-423 career 3 pointers are both the second-highest totals in school history. Brian Evans tops both lists at 186-456.
ON THE DEFENSE: The Hoosiers are holding their opponents to just 64.7 points per game, the lowest opponent average on record since 1983-84 when Indiana allowed 59.1 points a game. The opponents are shooting 40.5% from the field. That is the lowest opponent field goal shooting percentage for the season since 1991-92 when IU opponents shot 40.7%.
KEY NUMBERS: There are a few numbers that apparently are indicators of IU success. According to the numbers, IU needs to grab the halftime lead, as the Hoosiers are 11-1 when leading after the first 20 minutes (plus they're 1-0 when tied at the half). Conversely, the Hoosiers are 4-4 when trailing at half. Additionally, the Hoosiers are 13-1 when scoring more than 70 points, 8-0 when shooting 50% or better, 8-1 when garnering more rebounds and 16-0 when shooting better than their opponents.
LINEUP WATCH: Bob Knight has used nine different starting lineups this season. Luke Recker and A.J. Guyton have started every game. William Gladness is next at 17. The only players to not start this season have been Luke Jimenez, Tom Geyer and Antwaan Randle El.
DOUBLE YOUR FUN: William Gladness leads the Hoosiers this season with five double-doubles. Kirk Haston is next with three double-figure point rebound games. Luke Recker had 10 points and 10 assists vs. San Francisco. Michael Lewis registered one with season-highs of 14 points and 11 assists vs. Northwestern. Lynn Washington has his first career double with 12 points and 10 rebounds at Purdue.
RECORDS FALL IN RECENT GAMES: The Hoosiers recent good play has translated into team school records and other marks being set. Indiana's 12 blocks vs. San Francisco is the most in school history (old mark was 11 set twice before). Indiana's 88.9% 3-point field goal percentage vs. San Francisco tied the school record set once before. Indiana's 20 steals vs. Drake is a school record (old mark was 19 set twice before). Indiana's 29 assists vs. San Francisco was the second-highest single game total in school history (30 vs. Northwestern, 1981). Indiana's 66.7% field goal percentage vs. San Francisco (40-60) tied for the eighth-highest mark in school history (set five previous times).
HITTING THE CENTURY MARK: Indiana's consecutive 100+-point games vs. San Francisco and Drake was the sixth time that had happened in school history and the first time since 1993-94. The 56-point win over Drake was the second-largest victory margin in school history (65 vs. Notre Dame, 92-29, 1972). The consecutive 50-point victories was the first time that had happened in school history. It was also the 45th and 46th time a Bob Knight-led Indiana team has cracked the century mark.
DOUBLE DIGIT WINS BEFORE LEAGUE PLAY: Indiana registered double figures in wins before league play for the fifth time in the '90s. The other times this has happened was 10-0 in 1990, 12-0 in 1991, 11-2 in 1993 and 13-1 in 1997.
COMEBACK KIDS: Indiana has had the ability to come back in games this season. The Hoosiers notched their fifth come-from-behind victory as they erased a 4-point halftime deficit vs. Ball State. Indiana's last second victory over Temple was the fourth come-from-behind victory of the season. With 8:42 left, IU was down by 9 (52-43) and with 3:54 left, IU was 6 points down (56-50). They trailed by 19 at the half (45-26) to Indiana State and came back and won 76-70. They trailed by 18 (47-29) with 18:50 to play vs. Kansas State and won 71-70 and they trailed by 11 (45-34) with 17:03 to play vs. Notre Dame and won. IU was down by 9 with 68 seconds to play vs. Kentucky and managed to tie the game and send it into overtime.
WINS AND LOSSES: There have been some interesting differences in the 16 wins and 5 losses this season. IU has shot 49.5% in the wins but just 38.5% in the losses. The Hoosiers have also shot 40.3% in the victories and just 31% in the losses from 3-point range. IU's rebounding margin is +0.5 in the wins but in the losses it drops to -6.8. The Hoosiers also average 24.6 free throw attempts in the wins and just 14.2 in the losses.
MORE WINS AND LOSSES: Beside the team differences there have been some sharp contrasts in individual player stats in the victories and losses. A.J. Guyton is averaging 16.1 points in the wins and just 10.4 in the losses. He is shooting 49.5% in the wins and 31.2% in the losses. Kirk Haston is 80.6% from the line in wins and just 30% in losses.
FROM THE FIELD: The Hoosiers have been hot from the field as they have shot 55.9% in the last two games (58.8% vs. NU, 53.3% at PU). These are the first games IU has been over 50% in league play and broke a streak of five games below 50%. The effort vs. NU also included a 68% second half (17-25) which is the second best half of the season. Indiana has shot 50% or better eight times. Indiana was the top shooting team in the Big Ten last season at 49.1% but comes into today's game shooting 46.8%. When IU shoots well they win as the team has outshot its opponents in each victory.
LONG RANGERS: IU shot above 40% for the first time in league play as they made 5-12 at Purdue. That broke a streak of six games below the 40% mark. The Hoosiers have shot better than 40% seven times this season. IU has been under 36% from long range nine times this season. Indiana's 27 3-point attempts against Temple is a school record. The Hoosiers also tied a season-high with 9 3-pointers vs. the Owls.
CHARITY TOSSES: Indiana has also turned its fortunes around from the foul line. The Hoosiers shot a season-high 85% vs. Northwestern and then made 18-26 at Purdue for a percentage of 76.1 in the last two games. The Hoosiers are shooting just 68.2% from the line on the season. Over the years one of Indiana's keys to success has been making more free throws than its opponents attempt. This year IU has made 317 but the opponents have attempted 358.
BOARD REPORT: The Hoosiers have held an edge in rebounding in two of the last four games while one of those other games the rebounding margin was tied. IU also got back on the offensive glass against Purdue as they had 12 after grabbing just 11 in the two previous games. The Hoosiers still have a rebounding deficit of -2.1 in league play.
ASSIST ANGLE: The Hoosiers have averaged 18.5 assists in the last two games, which includes a league-high 20 at Purdue, after averaging just 12 per game in the first four league games. IU has posted at least 20 assists four times this season. Indiana had an assist on 64.6% of their field goals last season but are at 61.6% this year. Indiana has tallied more assists than their opponents 13 times this season. The Hoosiers have had only six games this season where they have had more turnovers than assists.
TURNOVER TALE: The Hoosiers are 13-3 when they commit the same or less number of turnovers as their opponent. IU averaged 16.8 turnovers in the first four league games but has cut that to 12 in the last two games. The season average is 14.1 (15.3 last season). The Hoosiers have had less than 15 turnovers in only three of the league games after doing so in 10 non-conference games.
A STEAL OF A TIME: Indiana's defense has been good and one of those indicators is the team's total of 192 steals (9.1 per game). Last year the team averaged just over 7 a contest. Indiana has had 10 games in which it has registered at least 9 steals and eight games in double figures. The Hoosiers set a school record with 20 vs. Drake. At the current pace the Hoosiers would easily break the school record of 250 set in 1992.
ON THE DEFENSE: The Hoosiers have held 10 opponents under 40% from the field this year after doing so only 8 times all of last season. However, five of the league opponents have been above 40%. The Hoosiers went through one stretch this season where they allowed no more than 10 field goals in six of seven consecutive halves (second half of Indiana State game through Utah game). Indiana has also allowed single figures in field goals in 11 halves. IU's opponents come into today's game shooting 40.5% from the field.
POINT PRODUCTION: Indiana scored a conference season-high 87 points at Purdue. That was the first time in five games IU was able to score more than 80 points in consecutive games. IU's scoring average in league play is 6.8 points less than its season total of 74.8. The Hoosiers scored 67 points in the second half vs. USF which was more points than the team has scored in seven games this season. Indiana has managed to score 80 or more points eight times this season. When the Hoosiers do score 80 or more points it usually means a victory. During Coach Knight's 28 years the Hoosiers are 307-18 when scoring 80 or more, 143-4 when scoring 90 or more and 46-0 when scoring 100 or more points.
BLOCK PARTY: After registering a school record 12 blocks vs. USF, Indiana has had just 22 in the last eight games. The 12 blocks was only the seventh time in school history an Indiana team has registered double figures in blocks. Larry Richardson and Kirk Haston lead the team with 17. The Hoosiers are averaging 3.5 blocks per game after averaging 3.9 a year ago.
BIG WINNERS: When the Hoosiers win they usually have a tendency to win big. Last season they won 13 games by 11 or more points and 19 contests by 6 or more points. This season the margin of victory stands at 17.4 points per game. However, Indiana has won all five games this season decided by 5 points or less.
DID YOU KNOW... over the last eight years the Hoosiers have led the Big Ten in scoring? During this span IU has averaged 79.1 points per game in conference play and have finished in the top half of the league in scoring every season.
ONE OF THE TOPS IN THE NATION: During the 1990's Indiana has been one of the top teams in college basketball. The Hoosiers have won 214 games this decade which makes them one of only 13 teams to have won 200 or more games during this span.
HOOSIERS IN ASSEMBLY HALL: The Hoosiers are 337-44 (.884) in Assembly Hall including a 201-37 (.844) record in Big Ten games. Since the beginning of the 1990-91 season the Hoosiers are 103-11 (.904) in Assembly Hall. Indiana is also 64-24 (.724) vs. ranked teams in the building.
