GAME #23 FACTS: Indiana (16-6, 3-4) vs. Minnesota (12-4, 3-3). Tuesday (Jan. 26). Williams Arena (14,300), Minneapolis, Minn. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
GAME DATA: The Indiana Hoosiers play the first of two road games this week tonight against Minnesota. Tonight's game is the second for IU in three days. Minnesota is one of four league teams the Hoosiers only play once this season. The Hoosiers come into tonight's game 16-6 overall and 3-4 in league play after losing to Michigan State Sunday 73-59.
TELEVISION: The Minnesota game will be broadcast by ESPN. Dave Barnett and Quinn Buckner call the action.

INDIANA HEAD COACH BOB KNIGHT. . . is college basketball's winningest active head coach with 736 victories (all games at the Division I level). He is just one of 12 NCAA coaches all-time to have recorded 700 or more victories. He is in his 28th season as the Indiana head coach and has a record of 634-226 (.737). Knight is in his 34th season as a collegiate head coach and has an overall record of 736-276 (.727). Knight's record in Big Ten play is 337-142 (.704). He has led the Hoosiers to three NCAA titles (1976, 1981 and 1987) and a conference record 11 Big Ten Championships (1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993). He was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame in May of 1991. Knight is 37-13 vs. Minnesota overall and while at Indiana.
THE SERIES: Indiana and Minnesota are meeting for the 136th time. The Hoosiers led the series 83-52 after Indiana won last year's only meeting 95-82 in Bloomington. Before that Indiana win, the Gophers had won four of the previous five meetings. The teams have split the last four meetings in Minneapolis as IU's last win came in Feb. 6, 1996 (81-66). Minnesota leads the series in games played in Minneapolis 34-31.
LAST SEASON'S MEETING: Indiana 95, Minnesota 82, Bloomington, Jan. 31: A.J. Guyton score 23 points to lead six Hoosiers in double figures as Indiana defeated Minnesota 95-82. The Hoosiers led 45-28 at halftime and built a 27-point second half lead twice in the second half before Minnesota mounted a comeback which got no closer than 11 points. Indiana shot 52.7% from the field and was 29 of 38 from the foul line. The Hoosiers also had 25 assists. Michael Lewis had 16 points while Luke Recker added 13, William Gladness and Luke Jimenez 11 and Andrae Patterson 10.
HOOSIERS IN THE POLLS: The Hoosiers are 15th in this week's ESPN/USA Today and 20th in the Associated Press rankings.
AGAINST THE BEST: Indiana is 3-5 this season against teams that were ranked when the Hoosiers played them. Indiana defeated Utah, Temple and Purdue while losing to Syracuse, Kentucky, Iowa, Ohio State and Michigan State.
LAST GAME: (Michigan State 73, Indiana 59): The Spartans beat Indiana 73-59 for their first win at Assembly Hall since 1990 and only their ninth in 44 trips to Bloomington. Mateen Cleaves had 16 points and 13 assists to lead the Spartans. Indiana, which shot 63% in the first half, trailed 38 34 at the break. The Hoosiers managed to cut the deficit to one early in the second half, but faded as the Spartans scored 11 consecutive points during a 14-1 run. Cleaves had a 3-pointer and three-point play as Michigan State pulled away when the Hoosiers failed to score from the16 minute mark until there was 7:55 to play. Michigan State opened a 61-46 lead with a 14-1 run that ended on a 3-pointer by Jason Klein with 7:41 left. The Spartans led 47-45 before Kirk Haston scored on a layup with 16 minutes to play. Michigan State then scored 11 consecutive points, capped by a Cleaves 3-pointer. Indiana didn't get another field goal until 7:41 remained. The Hoosiers' leading scorer, Luke Recker, ended his team's drought on a free throw with 7:55 left. It was the only point the sophomore scored in the game; he missed six shots from the field. A.J. Guyton topped Indiana with 23 points and Haston had 11. Reserve Morris Peterson and Jason Klein had 13 apiece for the Spartans, who had lost six straight at Assembly Hall. Despite shooting 63% in the first half, Indiana trailed 38-34 at the break after nearly wiping away a 16-point deficit. The Hoosiers shot 38% (11-29) in the second half while Michigan State shot 52% (13-25). Michigan State came out fast and opened a 28-14 lead on a three-point play by Charlie Bell with 8:04 left in the first half. Peterson sparked the early run by Michigan State with 9 consecutive points. Guyton scored 14 straight points, including two consecutive 3 pointers, within a four-minute span. After going scoreless for the game's first 13 minutes, the guard began his run with 6:46 left in the half with Indiana down 30-14. His jumper with 2:55 remaining left Indiana trailing 34-28 and his 16th point of the half reduced Michigan State's lead to 36 34. Guyton was the only Indiana starter on the court during the comeback run and sensing he had the hot hand, his teammates kept getting the ball to him. He was 6-8 from the field in the opening half, when Indiana made 14-22 attempts. The Hoosiers were hurt by 11 turnovers in the first half.
GUYTON AND RECKER ­ IMPORTANT TO THE CAUSE: When A.J. Guyton and Luke Recker combined for 30 or more points for the Hoosiers, it is usually a good sign of success for the team. This has happened 25 times in their careers and Indiana is 21-4 in those games. The Hoosiers are also 8-0 when they combine to score 40 or more points which they have done four times this season (41 vs. UAB, 44 at Notre Dame and vs. Northwestern and at Purdue). In games they haven't combined to score 30 or more the Hoosiers are 15-14.
BALANCED ATTACK BODES WELL: If the Hoosiers spread around the scoring attack they usually win. IU has won all eight games this season when they have at least four players score in double figures.
LOTS OF GAMES: The 15 games Indiana played this non-conference season is the most in school history before the Big Ten season. The previous high was 14 set in 1988-89 and 1996-97). The most non-conference games Indiana has ever played in a season is 17 which occurred in 1981, 1989 and 1993.
SLOW BIG TEN START USUALLY MEANS STRONG FINISH: During Coach Knight's tenure at Indiana, the Hoosiers have started the league season 1 3 three previous times. IU came back from those starts to post winning seasons each year. The previous three 1-3 starts came in 1978 (finished 12-6), 1979 (10-8) and 1988 (11-7).
GUYTON AND 3s: A.J. Guyton's 176-430 career 3-pointers are both the second-highest totals in school history. Brian Evans tops both lists at 186-456. The junior also set a school record with 16 3-point attempts vs. Ohio State breaking the old record of 13. He also tied a personal career high by making 7 3's vs. the Buckeyes. His 7 3's ties for the fifth-highest mark in school history and was just one off the school record. Along those same lines, Indiana's 26 3-point attempts vs. OSU was the second highest single-game total in school history.
GUYTON AMONG THE TOP 20: A.J. Guyton has now scored 1,319 career points which places him 20th on IU's all-time scoring list. He scored 23 vs. Michigan State to move past Tom Bolyard into 20th. He needs only 109 points to move up to 15th on the all-time list.
ON THE DEFENSE: The Hoosiers are holding their opponents to just 65.1 points per game, the lowest opponent average on record since 1984-85 when Indiana allowed 65.5 points a game. The opponents are shooting 40.9% from the field. That is the lowest opponent field goal shooting percentage for the season since 1991-92 when IU opponents shot 40.7%.
KEY NUMBERS: There are a few numbers that apparently are indicators of IU success. According to the numbers, IU needs to grab the halftime lead, as the Hoosiers are 11-1 when leading after the first 20 minutes (plus they're 1-0 when tied at the half). Conversely, the Hoosiers are 4-5 when trailing at half. Additionally, the Hoosiers are 13-1 when scoring more than 70 points, 8-0 when shooting 50% or better, 8-1 when garnering more rebounds and 16-1 when shooting better than their opponents.
LINEUP WATCH: Bob Knight has used nine different starting lineups this season. Luke Recker and A.J. Guyton have started every game. William Gladness is next at 18. The only players to not start this season have been Luke Jimenez, Tom Geyer and Antwaan Randle El.
DOUBLE YOUR FUN: William Gladness leads the Hoosiers this season with five double-doubles. Kirk Haston is next with three double-figure point rebound games. Luke Recker had 10 points and 10 assists vs. San Francisco. Michael Lewis registered one with season-highs of 14 points and 11 assists vs. Northwestern. Lynn Washington has his first career double with 12 points and 10 rebounds at Purdue.
RECORDS FALL IN RECENT GAMES: The Hoosiers recent good play has translated into team school records and other marks being set. Indiana's 12 blocks vs. San Francisco is the most in school history (old mark was 11 set twice before). Indiana's 88.9% 3-point field goal percentage vs. San Francisco tied the school record set once before. Indiana's 20 steals vs. Drake is a school record (old mark was 19 set twice before). Indiana's 29 assists vs. San Francisco was the second-highest single game total in school history (30 vs. Northwestern, 1981). Indiana's 66.7% field goal percentage vs. San Francisco (40-60) tied for the eighth-highest mark in school history (set five previous times).
HITTING THE CENTURY MARK: Indiana's consecutive 100+-point games vs. San Francisco and Drake was the sixth time that had happened in school history and the first time since 1993-94. The 56-point win over Drake was the second-largest victory margin in school history (65 vs. Notre Dame, 92-29, 1972). The consecutive 50-point victories was the first time that had happened in school history. It was also the 45th and 46th time a Bob Knight-led Indiana team has cracked the century mark.
DOUBLE DIGIT WINS BEFORE LEAGUE PLAY: Indiana registered double figures in wins before league play for the fifth time in the '90s. The other times this has happened was 10-0 in 1990, 12-0 in 1991, 11-2 in 1993 and 13-1 in 1997.
COMEBACK KIDS: Indiana has had the ability to come back in games this season. The Hoosiers notched their fifth come-from-behind victory as they erased a 4-point halftime deficit vs. Ball State. Indiana's last second victory over Temple was the fourth come-from-behind victory of the season. With 8:42 left, IU was down by 9 (52-43) and with 3:54 left, IU was 6 points down (56-50). They trailed by 19 at the half (45-26) to Indiana State and came back and won 76-70. They trailed by 18 (47-29) with 18:50 to play vs. Kansas State and won 71-70 and they trailed by 11 (45-34) with 17:03 to play vs. Notre Dame and won. IU was down by 9 with 68 seconds to play vs. Kentucky and managed to tie the game and send it into overtime.
WINS AND LOSSES: There have been some interesting differences in the 16 wins and 6 losses. IU has shot 49.5% in the wins but just 40.1% in the losses. The Hoosiers have also shot 40.3% in the victories and just 30.4% in the losses from 3-point range. IU's rebounding margin is +0.5 in the wins but in the losses it drops to -6.7. The Hoosiers also average 24.6 free throw attempts in the wins and just 14 in the losses.
FROM THE FIELD: The Hoosiers shot 49% vs. Michigan State which continued a good shooting streak for IU (87-162, 53.7% in the last three games). This includes two games over 50%. Indiana has shot 50% or better eight times. Indiana comes into tonight's game shooting 46.9%. When IU shoots well they win as the team is 16-1 when outshooting its opponents.
LONG RANGERS: After shooting 41.7% at Purdue, IU made just 3-12 vs. Michigan State. The Hoosiers have shot better than 40% seven times this season. IU has been under 36% from long range 10 times this season. Indiana's 27 3-point attempts against Temple is a school record. The Hoosiers also tied a season-high with 9 3-pointers vs. the Owls.
CHARITY TOSSES: Indiana had shot 76.1% from the line in consecutive games before making just 6-13 (46.3%) vs. Michigan State. The Hoosiers are shooting just 67.6% from the line on the season. Over the years one of Indiana's keys to success has been making more free throws than its opponents attempt. This year IU has made 323 but the opponents have attempted 372.
BOARD REPORT: The Hoosiers was outrebounded by 6 vs. MSU which was the fourth time they have lost the board battle in conference play. Indiana had just 8 offensive boards in the MSU game which was the third time in the last four games they have had less than 10 offensive boards. The Hoosiers have a rebounding deficit of -2.7 in league play.
ASSIST ANGLE: The Hoosiers managed just 13 assists vs. MSU after averaging 18.5 assists in the previous two games. IU has posted at least 20 assists four times this season. Indiana had an assist on 64.6% of their field goals last season but are at 61.1% this year. Indiana has tallied more assists than their opponents 13 times this season. The Hoosiers have had only seven games this season where they have had more turnovers than assists.
TURNOVER TALE: The Hoosiers are 13-3 when they commit the same or less number of turnovers as their opponent. IU averaged 16.8 turnovers in the first four league games but has cut that to 14 in the last three games. The season average is 14.3 (15.3 last season). The Hoosiers have had less than 15 turnovers in only three of the league games after doing so in 10 non-conference games.
A STEAL OF A TIME: Indiana's defense has been good and one of those indicators is the team's total of 196 steals (8.9 per game). Last year the team averaged just over 7 a contest. Indiana has had 10 games in which it has registered at least 9 steals and eight games in double figures. The Hoosiers set a school record with 20 vs. Drake. At the current pace the Hoosiers would easily break the school record of 250 set in 1992.
ON THE DEFENSE: The Hoosiers have held 10 opponents under 40% from the field this year after doing so only 8 times all of last season. However, six of the league opponents have been above 40%. The Hoosiers went through one stretch this season where they allowed no more than 10 field goals in six of seven consecutive halves (second half of Indiana State game through Utah game). Indiana has also allowed single figures in field goals in 11 halves. IU's opponents come into tonight's game shooting 40.9% from the field.
POINT PRODUCTION: The Hoosiers have struggled point wise in league losses. IU averages just 59.3 ppg in the four loses compared to the overall season average of 74.1. IU has scored 70 points or fewer in each of the losses and has been held under 60 in three of those games. IU's scoring average in league play is 7.4 points less than its season total . The Hoosiers scored 67 points in the second half vs. USF which was more points than the team has scored in eight games this season. Indiana has managed to score 80 or more points eight times this season. When the Hoosiers do score 80 or more points it usually means a victory. During Coach Knight's 28 years the Hoosiers are 307-18 when scoring 80 or more, 143-4 when scoring 90 or more and 46-0 when scoring 100 or more points.
BLOCK PARTY: Indiana has just 15 blocks in league play. IU had 12 blocks vs. USF which was only the seventh time in school history an Indiana team has registered double figures in blocks. Larry Richardson and Kirk Haston lead the team with 17. The Hoosiers are averaging 3.3 blocks per game after averaging 3.9 a year ago.
BIG WINNERS: When the Hoosiers win they usually have a tendency to win big. Last season they won 13 games by 11 or more points and 19 contests by 6 or more points. This season the margin of victory stands at 17.4 points per game. However, Indiana has won all five games this season decided by 5 points or less.
DID YOU KNOW... over the last eight years the Hoosiers have led the Big Ten in scoring? During this span IU has averaged 79.1 points per game in conference play and have finished in the top half of the league in scoring every season.
ONE OF THE TOPS IN THE NATION: During the 1990's Indiana has been one of the top teams in college basketball. The Hoosiers have won 214 games this decade which makes them one of only 13 teams to have won 200 or more games during this span.
HOOSIERS IN ASSEMBLY HALL: The Hoosiers are 337-45 (.882) in Assembly Hall including a 201-38 (.841) record in Big Ten games. Since the beginning of the 1990-91 season the Hoosiers are 103-12 (.896) in Assembly Hall. Indiana is also 64-25 (.719) vs. ranked teams in the building.
