HOOSIERS LOSE THRILLER TO NO. 2 PURDUE
The Indiana Women's Basketball team took second ranked Purdue to the wire before falling 91-86 in front of a school record 5,503 fans at Assembly Hall.
Senior All-American candidate Stephanie White-McCarty poured in 28 points on 12 of 18 shooting to send the Big Ten leading Boilermakers (18-1, 10-0 Big Ten) to their 16th straight win. Sophomore guard Katie Douglas scored 15 of her season high 21 points in the second half as Purdue outlasted a spirited Indiana effort.
The Hoosiers (13-11, 2-8 Big Ten) were led by the 20 points of junior guard Kay Morgan, who tied a career high with six three point baskets. Senior forward Cindy Kerns notched her ninth double-double of the year with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
The Hoosiers came out firing right from the start, hitting their first six shots in jumping out to a ten point lead. Purdue took the lead late in the first half,32-31, but the Hoosiers regained control and took a seven point lead into intermission.
Indiana kept the lead until White-McCarty drained a three pointer from the left corner to put the Boilers up 65-63 with under 11 minutes to play. Two lead changes later, Douglas' driving lay up with under nine to play put Purdue up for good.
Both teams shot the ball very well as Indiana shot 50 percent from the floor and from behind the three point line. Purdue was even better, shooting at a 63.6 percent clip and draining nearly 56 percent of its three pointers. In addition, all five starters for each team scored in double figures.
The Hoosiers are back in action Sunday as they travel to Columbus for a Sunday afternoon meeting with second place Ohio State. Game time is 2 p.m.
