GAME #24 FACTS: Indiana (16-7, 3-5) vs. Penn State (10-8, 2-6). Sunday (Jan. 31). Bryce Jordan Center (15,261), University Park, Pa. Game time is 1 p.m.
GAME DATA: The Indiana Hoosiers play the second of two road games this week today against Penn State. This game is also Indiana's sixth road game out of the first nine conference games. Penn State is one of four league teams Indiana plays once this season. The Hoosiers come into today's game 16-7 overall and 3-5 in league play after losing to Minnesota Tuesday 90-83 in overtime.
TELEVISION: The Penn State game will be broadcast by CBS. Verne Lundquist and Clark Kellogg call the action.

INDIANA HEAD COACH BOB KNIGHT. . . is college basketball's winningest active head coach with 736 victories (all games at the Division I level). He is just one of 12 NCAA coaches all-time to have recorded 700 or more victories. He is in his 28th season as the Indiana head coach and has a record of 634-227 (.736). Knight is in his 34th season as a collegiate head coach and has an overall record of 736-277 (.727). Knight's record in Big Ten play is 337-143 (.702). He has led the Hoosiers to three NCAA titles (1976, 1981 and 1987) and a conference record 11 Big Ten Championships (1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993). He was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame in May of 1991. Knight is 16-3 vs. Penn State overall and 12-1 while at Indiana.
THE SERIES: Indiana and Penn State are meeting for the 14th time. The Hoosiers led the series 12-1 after winning last year's game 95-76 in Bloomington. Indiana won the last game played at Penn State, 70-55 on Jan. 26, 1997. The Hoosiers lead the all-time series in University Park 4 1.
LAST SEASON'S MEETING: Indiana 95, Penn State 76, University Park, Feb. 4: Indiana used runs of 23-2 in the first half and 23-4 in the second half to pull away from Penn State and win by 19. The Hoosiers held a 50-36 halftime lead before the Lions cut it to 50-44 early in the second half. The Hoosiers then went on a 23-4 run and were never headed. Luke Recker led IU with a career-high 29 points. Andrae Patterson added 15 while A.J. Guyton and Rob Turner had 12 and William Gladness 10. Patterson led the team with 8 rebounds. The Hoosiers shot 56.3% including 61.3% in the first half while holding Penn State to 44.4% from the field. The Hoosiers also had 20 assists and made 9 steals.
HOOSIERS IN THE POLLS: The Hoosiers are 15th in this week's ESPN/USA Today and 20th in the Associated Press rankings.
SUPER SUNDAY HOOSIERS: Indiana is 2-2 all-time on Super Bowl Sunday. Last season IU won at Wisconsin 69-59 before the Broncos defeated the Packers. Indiana has also played on Super Sunday in 1997 (won 70-55 at Penn State, Green Bay beat New England), in 1994 (lost 88-81 at Illinois, Dallas beat Buffalo) and in 1990 (lost 108-89 at Minnesota, San Francisco defeated Denver). This is the third consecutive year the Hoosiers are playing on the road on Super Sunday.
AGAINST THE BEST: Indiana is 3-6 this season against teams that were ranked when the Hoosiers played them. Indiana defeated Utah, Temple and Purdue while losing to Syracuse, Kentucky, Iowa, Ohio State, Michigan State and Minnesota.
LAST GAME: (Minnesota 90, Indiana 83, ot): Coming off their second worst loss in the last six years, the Golden Gophers played perhaps their best game of the season in a 90-83 overtime victory over Indiana. Quincy Lewis, scored the last six of his 36 points at the foul line to give the Gophers the victory. He shouldered the bulk of the scoring load as he matched his career scoring high. Trailing 83-82, he hit two free throws with 1:35 remaining to put the Gophers ahead for good. After Joel Przybilla tipped in a miss by Lewis with 55 seconds remaining, Lewis made four more free throws in the final 30 seconds to clinch it. The Hoosiers led 40-36 at halftime, committed just three more turnovers the rest of the game and shot 61.5 percent in the second half. But they still couldn't avoid losing for the fourth time in six games. Luke Recker, who missed all six of his shots against Michigan State, was 3-11 from the field and scored 7 points. He also missed two important free throws that would have tied the game at 76 with 2:47 left in regulation. A.J. Guyton led Indiana with 27 points and freshman Kirk Haston scored a career-best 24 points and added 13 rebounds.
ILLINOIS GAME TIME AND DATE SET: The Big Ten Conference has announced the Indiana-Illinois game schedule for late February will be played on Wednesday, Feb. 24 at 8 p.m. ET (7 p.m. CT) in Champaign. The game will be televised by ESPN Regional which includes WTTV Ch.4 in Indianapolis. The only game left to be decided is the final regular season game against Iowa in Bloomington on either Feb. 27 or 28.
WHO'S HOT: Michael Lewis has taken a commanding team lead in assists with some recent good play. He has registered 31 assists (just 8 turnovers) in the last four games in an average of 33 minutes per game. He has also averaged 10.5 points per game during this stretch. Kirk Haston posted a career-high 24 points at Minnesota in a career-high 38 minutes. He also posted his fourth double-double as he added 13 rebounds. He has scored in double figures in four of the last six games. The redshirt freshman has also averaged 17.5 points and 10 rebounds a game in the last two games. A.J. Guyton is on one his best scoring stretch of the season. He has registered double figures in a season-high five consecutive games and has raised his scoring average from 13.5 to 15.6 during this span. He has averaged 23.2 points per game over the last five games and has shot 48% from the field and 44% from 3-point range.
WHO'S NOT: Indiana's leading scorer Luke Recker has scored just 8 points in the last two games. This is the lowest two-game scoring total in his career. The performances have also dropped his scoring average from 17.0 to 15.9. In these two games he is just 3-17 from the field, 1-9 from 3 point range and 1-4 from the line.
GUYTON AND RECKER ­ IMPORTANT TO THE CAUSE: When A.J. Guyton and Luke Recker combined for 30 or more points for the Hoosiers, it is usually a good sign of success for the team. This has happened 26 times in their careers and Indiana is 21-5 in those games. The Hoosiers are also 8-0 when they combine to score 40 or more points which they have done four times this season (41 vs. UAB, 44 at Notre Dame, 46 vs. Northwestern and 45 at Purdue). In games they haven't combined to score 30 or more the Hoosiers are 15-14.
BALANCED ATTACK BODES WELL: If the Hoosiers spread around the scoring attack they usually win. IU has won all eight games this season when they have at least four players score in double figures.
LOTS OF GAMES: The 15 games Indiana played this non-conference season is the most in school history before the Big Ten season. The previous high was 14 set in 1988-89 and 1996-97). The most non-conference games Indiana has ever played in a season is 17 which occurred in 1981, 1989 and 1993.
SLOW BIG TEN START USUALLY MEANS STRONG FINISH: During Coach Knight's tenure at Indiana, the Hoosiers have started the league season 1 3 three previous times. IU came back from those starts to post winning seasons each year. The previous three 1-3 starts came in 1978 (finished 12-6), 1979 (10-8) and 1988 (11-7).
GUYTON CLOSES IN ON 3-POINT RECORD: A.J. Guyton's 181-438 career 3 pointers are both the second-highest totals in school history. Brian Evans tops both lists at 186-456. The junior also set a school record with 16 3 point attempts vs. Ohio State (13 was the old record). He also tied a personal career-high by making 7 3's vs. the Buckeyes. His 7 3's ties for the fifth-highest mark in school history and was just one off the school record. Along those same lines, Indiana's 26 3-point attempts vs. OSU was the second-highest single-game total in school history.
GUYTON AMONG THE TOP 20: A.J. Guyton has now scored 1,346 career points which places him 19th on IU's all-time scoring list. He scored 27 at Minnesota to move past Ted Kitchel into 19th. Uwe Blab is 18th with 1,357 points while Andrae Patterson is 17th with 1,365. He needs only 82 points to move up to 15th on the all-time list.
ON THE DEFENSE: The Hoosiers are holding their opponents to just 66.2 points per game, the lowest opponent average on record since 1991-92 when Indiana allowed 65.8 points a game. The opponents are shooting 41.1% from the field. That is the lowest opponent field goal shooting percentage for the season since 1994-95 when IU opponents shot 41%.
KEY NUMBERS: There are a few numbers that apparently are indicators of IU success. According to the numbers, IU needs to grab the halftime lead, as the Hoosiers are 11-2 when leading after the first 20 minutes (plus they're 1-0 when tied at the half). Conversely, the Hoosiers are 4-5 when trailing at half. Additionally, the Hoosiers are 13-2 when scoring more than 70 points, 8-1 when shooting 50% or better, 8-1 when garnering more rebounds and 16-2 when shooting better than their opponents.
DOUBLE YOUR FUN: William Gladness leads the Hoosiers this season with five double-doubles. Kirk Haston is next with four double-figure point rebound games. Luke Recker had 10 points and 10 assists vs. San Francisco. Michael Lewis registered one with season-highs of 14 points and 11 assists vs. Northwestern. Lynn Washington has his first career double with 12 points and 10 rebounds at Purdue.
RECORDS FALL IN RECENT GAMES: The Hoosiers recent good play has translated into team school records and other marks being set. Indiana's 12 blocks vs. San Francisco is the most in school history (old mark was 11 set twice before). Indiana's 88.9% 3-point field goal percentage vs. San Francisco tied the school record set once before. Indiana's 20 steals vs. Drake is a school record (old mark was 19 set twice before). Indiana's 29 assists vs. San Francisco was the second-highest single game total in school history (30 vs. Northwestern, 1981). Indiana's 66.7% field goal percentage vs. San Francisco (40-60) tied for the eighth-highest mark in school history (set five previous times).
HITTING THE CENTURY MARK: Indiana's consecutive 100+-point games vs. San Francisco and Drake was the sixth time that had happened in school history and the first time since 1993-94. The 56-point win over Drake was the second-largest victory margin in school history (65 vs. Notre Dame, 92-29, 1972). The consecutive 50-point victories was the first time that had happened in school history. It was also the 45th and 46th time a Bob Knight-led Indiana team has cracked the century mark.
EXTA TIME: Indiana's overtime game at Minnesota was its third of the season (earlier this year IU defeated Notre Dame and lost to Kentucky). Last year the Hoosiers played only one overtime game (vs. Okalhoma in the first round of the NCAA Tournament). In 1997, IU played four overtime games.
DOUBLE DIGIT WINS BEFORE LEAGUE PLAY: Indiana registered double figures in wins before league play for the fifth time in the '90s. The other times this has happened was 10-0 in 1990, 12-0 in 1991, 11-2 in 1993 and 13-1 in 1997.
COMEBACK KIDS: Indiana has had the ability to come back in games this season. The Hoosiers notched their fifth come-from-behind victory as they erased a 4-point halftime deficit vs. Ball State. Indiana's last second victory over Temple was the fourth come-from-behind victory of the season. With 8:42 left, IU was down by 9 (52-43) and with 3:54 left, IU was 6 points down (56-50). They trailed by 19 at the half (45-26) to Indiana State and came back and won 76-70. They trailed by 18 (47-29) with 18:50 to play vs. Kansas State and won 71-70 and they trailed by 11 (45-34) with 17:03 to play vs. Notre Dame and won. IU was down by 9 with 68 seconds to play vs. Kentucky and managed to tie the game and send it into overtime.
WINS AND LOSSES: There have been some interesting differences in the 16 wins and 7 losses. IU has shot 49.5% in the wins but just 42% in the losses. The Hoosiers have also shot 40.3% in the victories and just 31.5% in the losses from 3-point range. IU's rebounding margin is +0.5 in the wins but in the losses it drops to -6.1. The Hoosiers also average 24.6 free throw attempts in the wins and just 14.2 in the losses.
FROM THE FIELD: The Hoosiers shot 52.4% at Minnesota which was the third time in the last four games IU has shot better than 50% (120-225, 53.3% in the last four games). The Minnesota game was the first time this season IU had shot 50% or better and lost. It was also the second time this season (and in consecutive games) the Hoosiers have shot better than the opponents and lost. Indiana has shot 50% or better nine times. Indiana comes into today's game shooting 47.1%. Indiana is 16-2 when outshooting its opponents.
LONG RANGERS: Indiana has made 18-39 3's (46.2%) over the last three games which is well above its season's percentage of 37.2. The Hoosiers made 6-15 (40%) at Minnesota which was just the second time this conference season they have shot at least 40%. For the season, IU has shot at least 40% eight times. IU has been under 36% from long range 10 times this season. Indiana's 27 3-point attempts against Temple is a school record.
CHARITY TOSSES: Indiana has been below 70% from the line in each of the last three games after shooting a season-high 85% vs. Northwestern. The Hoosiers are shooting just 67.6% from the line. Over the years one of Indiana's keys to success has been making more free throws than its opponents attempt. This year IU has made 334 but the opponents have attempted 393.
BOARD REPORT: IU has lost the battle of the boards in each of the last two games but only by a total of 9 rebounds. The Hoosiers have lost the rebounding wars five times in conference play. Indiana had just 8 offensive boards at Minnesota which was the fourth time in the last five games they have had less than 10 offensive boards. The Hoosiers have a rebounding deficit of -2.8 in league play.
ASSIST ANGLE: The Hoosiers have averaged 17.6 apg over the last three games which includes conference season-highs of 20 against Purdue and Minnesota. IU has posted at least 20 assists five times this season. Indiana had an assist on 64.6% of their field goals last season but are at 61.1% this year. Indiana has tallied more assists than their opponents 13 times this season. The Hoosiers have had only seven games this season where they have had more turnovers than assists.
TURNOVER TALE: The Hoosiers are 13-3 when they commit the same or less number of turnovers as their opponent. IU averaged 16.8 turnovers in the first four league games but has cut that to 14 in the last four games. The season average is 14.3 (15.3 last season). The Hoosiers have had less than 15 turnovers in only four of the league games after doing so in 10 non-conference games.
A STEAL OF A TIME: Indiana's has 201 steals (8.7 per game). In the last five games, IU has averaged just 3.8 a game. Last year the team averaged just over 7 a contest. Indiana has had 10 games in which it has registered at least 9 steals and eight games in double figures. The Hoosiers set a school record with 20 vs. Drake. At the current pace the Hoosiers would break the school record of 250 set in 1992.
ON THE DEFENSE: The Hoosiers have held 10 opponents under 40% from the field this year after doing so only 8 times all of last season. However, seven of the league opponents have been above 40%. The Hoosiers went through one stretch this season where they allowed no more than 10 field goals in six of seven consecutive halves (second half of Indiana State game through Utah game). Indiana has also allowed single figures in field goals in 11 halves. IU's opponents come into tonight's game shooting 40.9% from the field.
POINT PRODUCTION: The Hoosiers have struggled point wise in league losses. IU averages just 64 ppg in the losses compared to the overall season average of 74.5. IU has been held to 70 ore less in four of these losses. IU's scoring average in league play is 5.7 points less than its season total . The Hoosiers scored 67 points in the second half vs. USF which was more points than the team has scored in eight games this season. Indiana has managed to score 80 or more points eight times this season. When the Hoosiers do score 80 or more points it usually means a victory. During Coach Knight's 28 years the Hoosiers are 307-19 when scoring 80 or more, 143-4 when scoring 90 or more and 46-0 when scoring 100 or more points.
BLOCK PARTY: Indiana has just 19 blocks in league play. IU had 12 blocks vs. USF which was only the seventh time in school history an Indiana team has registered double figures in blocks. Kirk Haston leads the team with 19. The Hoosiers are averaging 3.3 blocks per game after averaging 3.9 a year ago.
BIG WINNERS: When the Hoosiers win they usually have a tendency to win big. Last season they won 13 games by 11 or more points and 19 contests by 6 or more points. This season the margin of victory stands at 17.4 points per game. However, Indiana has won all five games this season decided by 5 points or less.
DID YOU KNOW... over the last eight years the Hoosiers have led the Big Ten in scoring? During this span IU has averaged 79.1 points per game in conference play and have finished in the top half of the league in scoring every season.
ONE OF THE TOPS IN THE NATION: During the 1990's Indiana has been one of the top teams in college basketball. The Hoosiers have won 214 games this decade which makes them one of only 13 teams to have won 200 or more games during this span.
