GAME #18 FACTS: Indiana (14-3, 1-1 Big Ten) at Michigan (7-8, 1-1 Big Ten). Tuesday (Jan. 5). Crisler Arena (13,52), Ann Arbor, Mich. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
GAME DATA: The Indiana Hoosiers play tonight at Michigan in the first of two road games this week. Tonight's game is the final one in a stretch of five games in 10 days for Indiana. The Hoosiers come into tonight's game 14-3 overall and 1-1 in league play after defeating Illinois Sunday 62-53.
TELEVISION: The Michigan game will be broadcast by ESPN. Dave Barnett and Quinn Buckner call the action.
RADIO: Every IU game can be heard on the IU Radio Network. Don Fischer, Bob Hammel, Joe Smith and Norm Ellenberger call the action. The pregame hilarity begins 40 minutes prior to tipoff.
INDIANA HEAD COACH BOB KNIGHT. . . is college basketball's winningest active head coach with 734 victories (all games at the Division I level). He is just one of 12 NCAA coaches all time to have recorded 700 or more victories. He is in his 28th season as the Indiana head coach and has a record of 632-223 (.739). Knight is in his 34th season as a collegiate head coach and has an overall record of 734-273 (.729). Knight's record in Big Ten play is 335-139 (.707). He has led the Hoosiers to three NCAA titles (1976, 1981 and 1987) and a conference record 11 Big Ten Championships (1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993). He was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame in May of 1991. Knight is 34-20 vs. Michigan overall and 34-19 while at Indiana.
THE SERIES: Indiana and Michigan are meeting for the 133rd time. The Hoosiers lead the series 83-49 after the teams split last year's meetings. Indiana won 80-62 in Bloomington while Michigan won 112-64 in Ann Arbor. The Hoosiers have won three of the last four and four of the last six meetings. Indiana last win in Ann Arbor came two years ago (84-81 in overtime). Michigan leads the series in Ann Arbor 36-31.
HOOSIERS IN THE POLLS: The Hoosiers are ranked 13th in this week's ESPN/USA Today poll and were 8th in last week's Associated Press rankings.
SMALL CROWD: Due to the winter weather condidtions, Indiana's crowd of 7,249 Sunday was the smallest crowd in Assembly Hall history. The previous low was 7,982 against South Carolina in 1973-74.
LOTS OF GAMES: The 15 games Indiana played this non-conference season is the most in school history before the Big Ten season. The previous high was 14 set in 1988-89 and 1996-97). The most non-conference games Indiana has ever played in a season is 17 which occurred in 1981, 1989 and 1993. As of Monday, Indiana had played more games, and have won more games (14), this season than any other school in the nation.
LAST GAME: (Indiana 62, Illinois 53): With only 7,249 fans in Assembly Hall because of a weekend winter storm that walloped the state, the Hoosiers got 23 points from Luke Recker and turned 18 turnovers into 21 points in a 62-53 victory over Illinois. Indiana coach Bob Knight told his players before the game not to expect the same kind of support they usually get at home. "That's what good teams do," Knight said. ``That becomes the difference in teams. The teams that don't care about the circumstances, the teams that only care about the fact that a game is scheduled and play, those are the teams that are always the better teams. The other teams that involve themselves with circumstance never win anything." After dropping the Big Ten season-opener to Iowa, the Hoosiers rebounded with their first conference victory of the season. The win also broke the Hoosiers' three-game losing streak against the Illini. Indiana started slowly, shooting 0-10 from behind the 3-point line in the first half. But the Hoosiers made 3-9 3-pointers in the second half. Down 38-37 with 11:54 left, Recker hit three 3-pointers in a row and Kirk Haston's jumper completed an 11-1 Indiana run. Illinois pulled within five points twice, but was never able to get closer than that. A.J. Guyton scored 14 points and had seven rebounds for the Hoosiers. Cory Bradford led the Illini with 17 points and Damir Krupalija grabbed 16 rebounds. Neither team shot well. Illinois made 34.5% of its shots from the field while Indiana connected on 36.4%.
LAST SEASON'S GAMES: Indiana 80, Michigan 62, Bloomington, Jan. 6, 1998: Indiana played one of its best games of the seasons as they defeated Michigan. The game was tied at 44-44 until the Hoosiers went on a 15-2 run to take control of the game over the next 8 minutes. From that point, Michigan never got closer than 11 points. Andrae Patterson led the Hoosiers with 19 points while William Gladness had his first career double-double with 14 and a career-high 12 rebounds. The Hoosiers also shot 55.6% from the field and made 7-11 3-point field goals while holding the Wolverines to 40.7% from the floor.
Michigan 112, Indiana 64, Feb. 22, 1998: In a game where nothing went right for Indiana and everything did for Michigan, the Hoosiers lost by 48 at Ann Arbor. Michigan shot 62.9% in the first half and led 54-25 at the break. UM held IU to just 22.6% (7-31) in the first half and a season-low 32.8% for the game. Larry Richardson led IU with 13 points while Rob Turner added 12. Five Michigan players reached double figures led by Louis Bullock's 26. Michigan made 15-25 3-pointers and shot an opponent's season-high 61.8% in the game. The Wolverines also outrebounded the Hoosiers 45-27 and had 25 assists and just 9 turnovers.
ON THE DEFENSE: The Hoosiers are holding their opponents to just 61.8 points per game, the lowest opponent average on record since 1983-84 when Indiana allowed 59.1 points a game. The opponents are shooting 39% from the field. That is the lowest opponent field goal shooting percentage for the season since 1966-67 when IU opponents shot 39.6%.
OPENING SEASON LOSS: The Hoosiers dropped their league opener at Iowa Thursday. However, in past years, that has not meant a bad conference season awaits. Before the Iowa loss, IU had lost eight previous conference openers that were played on the road during Knight's 28 years. The Hoosiers have come back to average 11.1 wins in those previous eight seasons and won three of Knight's 11 conference championships (1974, 1980 and 1983).
AWAY FROM HOME: IU plays three of its first four, four of its first six and six of its first nine conference games away from home.
DOUBLE YOUR FUN: William Gladness leads the Hoosiers this season with four double-doubles. His most recent came against Ball State with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Kirk Haston has two double-figure point-rebound games while Luke Recker had 10 points and 10 assists vs. San Francisco.
RECORDS FALL IN RECENT GAMES: The Hoosiers recent good play has translated into team school records and other marks being set. Indiana's 12 blocks vs. San Francisco is the most in school history (old mark was 11 set twice before). Indiana's 88.9% 3-point field goal percentage vs. San Francisco tied the school record set once before. Indiana's 20 steals vs. Drake is a school record (old mark was 19 set twice before). Indiana's 29 assists vs. San Francisco was the second-highest single game total in school history (30 vs. Northwestern, 1981). Indiana's 66.7% field goal percentage vs. San Francisco (40-60) tied for the eighth-highest mark in school history (set five previous times).
HITTING THE CENTURY MARK: Indiana's consecutive 100+-point games vs. San Francisco and Drake was the sixth time that had happened in school history and the first time since 1993-94. The 56-point win over Drake was the second-largest victory margin in school history (65 vs. Notre Dame, 92-29, 1972). The consecutive 50-point victories was the first time that had happened in school history. It was also the 45th and 46th time a Bob Knight-led Indiana team has cracked the century mark.
DOUBLE DIGIT WINS BEFORE LEAGUE PLAY: Indiana registered double figures in wins before league play for the fifth time in the '90s. The other times this has happened was 10-0 in 1990, 12-0 in 1991, 11-2 in 1993 and 13-1 in 1997.
GUYTON CLOSES IN ON 3-POINT RECORDS: A.J. Guyton has 162 career 3 pointers and needs 5 more 3-pointers to move into second place on the school's all-time 3-point field goal list (Damon Bailey is second with 166). His 396 3-point attempts is second on the all-time list surpassing Damon Bailey's 380. Brian Evans tops both lists at 186-456.
COMEBACK KIDS: Indiana has had the ability to come back in games this season with great success. The Hoosiers notched their fifth come-from behind victory as they erased a 4-point halftime deficit vs. Ball State. Indiana's last second victory over Temple was the fourth come-from behind victory of the season. With 8:42 left, IU was down by 9 (52-43) and with 3:54 left, IU was 6 points down (56-50). They trailed by 19 at the half (45-26) to Indiana State and came back and won 76-70. They trailed by 18 (47-29) with 18:50 to play vs. Kansas State and won 71-70 and they trailed by 11 (45-34) with 17:03 to play vs. Notre Dame and won. IU was down by 9 with 68 seconds to play vs. Kentucky and managed to tie the game and send it into overtime.
WINS AND LOSSES: There have been some interesting differences in the 14 wins and 3 losses this season. IU has shot 48.6% in the wins but just 38.2% in the losses. The Hoosiers have also shot 40.4% in the victories and just 30.4% in the losses from 3-point range. IU's rebounding margin is +0.6 in the wins but in the losses it drops to -9.4. The Hoosiers also average 24.9 free throw attempts in the wins and just 12.7 in the losses.
FROM THE FIELD: The Hoosiers have struggled shooting in the last three games making just 64-164 (39%). That comes after a stretch of four consecutive games above 50%. IU's 36.4% effort vs. Illinois was its second-lowest percentage of the season. Indiana has shot 50% or better six times. Indiana was the top shooting team in the Big Ten last season at 49.1% but comes into tonight's game shooting 46.7%. When the Hoosiers shoot well they win as the team has outshot its opponents in each victory.
LONG RANGERS: As with the overall field goal shooting, 3-point shooting has also been slipping. The Hoosiers have made just 15-49 3-pointers in the last three games. IU tied a season-low with just 3 against Illinois. The Hoosiers were 3-15 overall vs. Illinois and were 0-10 in the first half. The Hoosiers have shot better than 40% six times this season. IU has been under 36% from long range seven times this season. Indiana's 27 3-point attempts against Temple is a school record. The previous record was 25 vs. Iowa last year. The Hoosiers also tied a season-high with 9 3 pointers vs. the Owls.
CHARITY TOSSES: Indiana's free throw shooting is also off as they have made just 43-67 (64.2%) in the last three games. The Hoosiers are shooting just 67.9% from the line on the season and have not shot better than 70% in seven of the last 10 games. Over the years one of Indiana's keys to success has been making more free throws than its opponents attempt. This year IU has made 262 but the opponents have attempted 269.
BOARD REPORT: Indiana is 7-0 this season when they manage to outrebound its opponents. The Hoosiers come into tonight's game averaging 35.6 boards per game. Indiana comes into tonight's game with a rebounding margin for the season of -1.2.
ASSIST ANGLE: The Hoosiers have had only 36 assists in the last three games after having 55 in the two previous games. IU has posted at least 20 assists three different times this season. The 12 per game average over the last three contests is far below the season average of 16.8. Indiana had an assist on 64.6% of their field goals last season but are at 62.5% this year. Indiana has tallied more assists than their opponents 12 times this season. The Hoosiers have had only five games this season where they have had more turnovers than assists.
TURNOVER TALE: The Hoosiers are 12-3 when they commit the same or less number of turnovers as their opponent. IU has had 43 turnovers in the last three games which includes a season-high 20 turnovers at Iowa. The Hoosiers have had less than 15 turnovers in 10 of the last 12 games and have averaged only 13 miscues per game during this stretch. This year the team is averaging 13.9 miscues per game. Last year it was 15.3 per game.
A STEAL OF A TIME: Indiana's defense has been good and one of those indicators is the team's total of 171 steals (10.1 per game). Last year the team averaged just over 7 a contest. Indiana has had 10 games in which it has registered at least 9 steals and eight games in double figures. The Hoosiers set a school record with 20 vs. Drake. At the current pace of over 10 a game, the Hoosiers would easily break the school record of 250 set in 1992.
ON THE DEFENSE: The Hoosiers have held 10 opponents under 40% from the field this year after doing so only 8 times all of last season. The Hoosiers went through one stretch this season where they allowed no more than 10 field goals in six of seven consecutive halves (second half of Indiana State game through Utah game). Indiana has also allowed single figures in field goals in 11 halves. IU's opponents come into tonight's game shooting just 39.% from the field.
POINTS EQUAL VICTORIES: Indiana has scored just 114 points (57.0 ppg) in the two conference games after averaging 90.2 points per game in the five previous game. IU's scoring average in league play is 18.1 points less than its season total of 75.1. The Hoosiers scored 67 points in the second half vs. USF which was more points than the team has scored in six games this season. Indiana has managed to score 80 or more points six times this season. When the Hoosiers do score 80 or more points it usually means a victory. During Coach Knight's 28 years the Hoosiers are 305-18 when scoring 80 or more, 143-4 when scoring 90 or more and 46-0 when scoring 100 or more points.
BLOCK PARTY: After registering a school record 12 blocks vs. USF, Indiana has had just 13 in the last four games. The 12 blocks was only the seventh time in school history an Indiana team has registered double figures in blocks. Kirk Haston and Larry Richardson the team with 16. The Hoosiers are averaging 3.8 blocks per game after averaging 3.9 a year ago.
BIG WINNERS: When the Hoosiers win they usually have a tendency to win big. Last season they won 13 games by 11 or more points and 19 contests by 6 or more points. This season the margin of victory stands at 18.8 points per game.
DID YOU KNOW... over the last eight years the Hoosiers have led the Big Ten in scoring? During this span IU has averaged 79.1 points per game in conference play and have finished in the top half of the league in scoring every season.
ONE OF THE TOPS IN THE NATION: During the 1990's Indiana has been one of the top teams in college basketball. The Hoosiers have won 214 games this decade which makes them one of only 13 teams to have won 200 or more games during this span.
HOOSIERS IN ASSEMBLY HALL: The Hoosiers are 336-44 (.884) in Assembly Hall including a 200-37 (.843) record in Big Ten games. Since the beginning of the 1990-91 season the Hoosiers are 102-11 (.903) in Assembly Hall. Indiana is also 64-24 (.724) vs. ranked teams in the building.
