INDIANA TRAVELS TO IOWA, HOSTS WISCONSINTHIS WEEK - Indiana, 11-6 overall, 0-3 in the Big Ten, looks to get back on the winning track this weekend, first traveling to Iowa City, Iowa, for a Friday, Jan. 8, tipoff against Iowa and then hosting Wisconsin Sunday, Jan. 10, in Bloomington. Tipoff against the Hawkeyes is set for 7 p.m. (CST), while the Badgers and Hoosiers will toss the ball up at 5 p.m. (EST) in Assembly Hall.
HOOSIERS ON THE TUBE - Sunday's game vs. Wisconsin will be televised live on Fox Sports Chicago at 5 p.m. (EST). Dave Eanet will be calling the action while Amy Prichard will provide color commentary.
TOUGH START - The Hoosiers have gotten off to a rough Big Ten Conference start with three-straight losses. Indiana opened the 1998-99 Big Ten season last week with losses to Michigan (72-58), Northwestern (68-66) and Illinois (96-65). Indiana's three-straight losses mark the worst conference start for the Hoosiers since the 1995-96 season when IU dropped its first seven league games.
LAST OUTING - Indiana dropped a 96-65 decision to Illinois Jan. 3, in Champaign, Ill. The Hoosiers shot a season-low 32 percent from the field while the Fighting Illini became the first team to shoot 50 percent or better from the field against Indiana this season. Individually, Kay Morgan led IU with 21 points while Cindy Kerns registered a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds.
LEADERBOARD - The Hoosiers are currently averaging 73.8 points and 38.7 rebounds per game while shooting 45 percent from the field. Individually, Cindy Kerns leads the Hoosiers' offense, averaging 15.1 points per game along with 7.9 rebounds. Freshman Jill Chapman and junior Kay Morgan follow with 12.3 and 11.6 scoring averages per game, respectively.
AT IOWA - The Hawkeyes enter Assembly Hall with a 7-6 overall record and a 2-1 mark in the Big Ten. Iowa opened the league season with a 89-86 win over Illinois, a 79-72 loss at Wisconsin and a 66-58 win at Minnesota. The Hawkeyes are a young team with just one senior, two sophomores and eight freshmen on the roster. Senior Amy Herrig leads Iowa, averaging 16.1 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. She is followed by freshman Lindsey Meder who averages 12.9 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. As a team the Hawkeyes average 69.8 points and 38.8 rebounds per game while shooting 45 percent from the field. Iowa is coached by Angie Lee who is in her fourth season at the helm and carries a 70-33 school and career record. The Series: Iowa leads the all-time series 24-9. Last season the two school's met just once with the Hawkeyes winning 68-61 in Iowa City.
VS. WISCONSIN - Wisconsin will play at Michigan State before facing
the Hoosiers Sunday in Assembly Hall. The Badgers have gotten off to a 7-6
overall, 2-2 Big Ten start. Wisconsin defeated Minnesota and Iowa but lost
to Illinois and Ohio State to open Big Ten play. Sophomore LaTonya Sims
leads the Badgers, averaging 16.8 points per game. She is followed by freshmen
Jessie Stomski and Tamara Moore who average 13.1 and 10.8 points per game,
respectively. As a team, UW is averaging 74.1 points and 37.8 rebounds per
game while connecting on 45 percent of its shots from the field. Head Coach
Jane Albright-Dieterle is in her fifth season at Wisconsin and holds a 90-44
record with the program. The Series: IU leads the all-time series 29-8.
Last season each team won on their own home court with the Badgers winning
75-60 in Madison, and the Hoosiers winning 56-55 in Bloomington.
HEAD COACH JIM IZARD - Head Coach Jim Izard is in his 11th season at the helm of the Indiana program where he owns a 176-129 (.579) overall record and a 77-101 (.445) mark in the Big Ten Conference. As Indiana's all-time winningest coach, Izard has guided his teams to nine winning seasons, two NCAA post-season tournament appearances, a runner-up finish in the NWIT post-season tournament and most recently, a trip to the Final Four of the WNIT last season. His 17-year career record stands at 338-178 (.657).
DOUBLE-TROUBLE - Forward Cindy Kerns and center Jill Chapman have combined for 11 double-doubles this season for scoring and rebounding. Kerns has double-dipped seven times, including the last three-straight games, while Chapman has doubled-up in four games. In addition, senior guard Dani Thrush has two double-dips to her credit this season.
BIG TEN PLAY - Senior Cindy Kerns has turned up her numbers for her final Big Ten stanza, posting double-doubles in each of the Hoosiers first three Big Ten games. Against Michigan, the 6-2 forward had 12 points and 10 rebounds while against Northwestern, she scored 19 points and hauled down 10 boards. Then, against Illinois on Sunday, Kerns registered 13 points with 14 rebounds to close out the week with 44 points and 34 rebounds.
RECEIVING VOTES - Indiana received seven votes in the Jan. 4, Associated Press Top 25 Poll.
OVER AND UNDER - When the Hoosiers score more than 70 points they are 9-0, when they score less than 70 they are 2-6.
LONG DISTANCE THREAT - As Indiana's explosive 3-point shooter, Kay Morgan ranks third in the Big Ten with 39 3-pointers. Currently, the junior is averaging 2.3 per game.
BEHIND THE ARC - As a team, the Hoosiers currently lead the Big Ten in 3-point baskets and rank third in 3-point field goal percentage. IU has netted 104 treys while shooting 32 percent from behind the arc.
CLOSING IN ON 1,000 - Seniors Kristi Green and Dani Thrush are quickly closing in on the 1,000 point career milestone. Currently, Green has 911 career points while Thrush boasts 877. Green needs just 89 points while Thrush is 123 points shy of 1,000.
ASSIST ANGELS - Indiana is averaging 16.7 assists per game compared to its opponents 12.9. Dani Thrush leads the squad, averaging 5.0 assists per game while Kay Morgan averages 3.4 per game. In addition, Morgan boasts a 2:1 assist/turnover ratio.
FREE THROW WOES - Traditionally an excellent free throw shooting team, the Hoosiers have struggled this season, connecting on just 66 percent of their shots from the charity stripe. Last season IU started off slow also, shooting just 63 percent from the free throw line before rebounding with a school record 75 percent season average.
AROUND THE BIG TEN - The Hoosiers currently lead the Big Ten in
3-point shooting, averaging 6.1 treys per game. Individually, Jill Chapman
and Cindy Kerns ranks third and sixth, respectively, in field goal percentage.
Chapman also ranks sixth in blocked shots with 1.2 per game while Kerns
ranks seventh in rebounding with 7.9 per game. Dani Thrush ranks fourth
in the league with 5.0 assists per game and is fifth in steals with 2.3
per game while Kay Morgan ranks third in 3-point field goal percentage (.386).
