INDIANA LOSES TO IOWA
IOWA CITY, Iowa - Indiana's women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker at the buzzer Friday evening, losing to Iowa 77-76 in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Indiana, which led by as many as five in the second half, held off the fiesty Hawkeyes until with 7.7 ticks remaining, Iowa's Jerica Watson nailed a 6-foot driving bankshot to put the Hawkeyes up by one point 77-76. Indiana's Kristi Green drove the ball the length of the court but was not able to convert her final shot when she was blocked in the lane.
The Hoosiers, who have now lost four-straight games, fall to 11-7 overall, 0-4 in the Big Ten, while Iowa improves to 8-6 overall, 3-1 in league play.
Indiana broke a 73-all tie with 1:28 remaining when junior Kay Morgan nailed a 3-pointer. After a Hoosier timeout, Summar Maines picked up her fifth foul with :34 left in the game. Iowa's Cara Consuegra converted both of her free throws to pull within one at 76-75 with 31.8 left. From there, Iowa was forced to foul Indiana three times before putting the Hoosiers in the bonus and sending Heather Cassady to the line with 26.2 seconds left. Cassady missed the front end of the one-on-one to give Iowa the chance to call timeout and set up the last second victory shot.
All five scorers netted double-figures, led by Kay Morgan;s 19 points. Dani Thrush had 11 points, 12 assists and six rebounds for almost a triple double. As a team, IU shot 51 percent from the field.
"I thought we played this game well enough to win," said Coach Jim Izard. "I don't think we played bad tonight, it was just the little things down the stretch in the last 30 seconds that we didn't do to take care of the game. But overall, I though our effort and execution was pretty good formost of the game. Both teams played good enough to win, we just happened to be the team that lost the game."
