Madison, Wis.-Indiana University's men's soccer team extended its winning streak to nine with a 2-0 victory over Wisconsin in Madison, Wis. The number one ranked Hoosiers improve to 10-2-0 and 3-0-0 in Big Ten action, while the Badgers drop to 4-10-1 and 0-4-0 in league play.
The Badgers packed it defensively and that frustrated the potent Indiana offense in the first half. "It was the first time this season that we had faced a team packing it in defensively this season," commented Indiana Head Jerry Yeagley. "I have to credit Wisconsin...they're a much improved team. They had some dangerous counters. But, In the second half we were a lot more patient and moved the ball more quickly."
The Hoosier scoring tandem of Matt Fundenberger and Aleksey Korol again led the Indiana attack. Fundenberger scored at 65:31 five yards away on a cross from Korol with Yuri Lavrinenko also assisting.
Korol then scored his team-high 11th goal of the season, an 18-yard blast, at 71:22 with Justin Tauber assisting. IU goalkeeper T.J. Hannig registered five saves in recording his sixth win of the season.
The Hoosiers are now 19-1-1 in their last 21 Big Ten Conference games. Indiana last lost to a conference opponent during the Big Ten season in 1995, when it dropped a 0-2 decision at Wisconsin. That 1995 Badger squad went on to capture the NCAA Championship. The only tie came against Penn State in 1996 at 1-1. Overall, Indiana is a dominating 37-4-2 in Big Ten games (beginning in 1991).
Indiana has now won nine in a row with seven shutouts in that skein. Also, Indiana's opponents have only netted three goals in the last nine matches. IU has outscored its opponents 29 to three during the current nine-game winning streak.
Indiana plays at Northwestern on Sunday (Oct. 17) starting at 2 p.m.
