INDIANA WINS AT IOWA
IOWA CITY, Iowa - Indiana's volleyball team picked up a Big Ten victory on the road Saturday evening, defeating Iowa 15-13, 9-15, 15-10, 15-10 in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
The Hoosiers (12-5 overall, 3-5 Big Ten) started the match sluggish, narrowly winning game one 15-13 and then losing game two to the Hawkeyes (4-11 overall, 3-5 Big Ten) 9-15. After the intermission, the Hoosiers picked it up offensively, winning both games three and four 15-10 for the match victory.
Five Hoosiers tallied double-figure kill totals as the Hoosiers dominated Iowa offensively with 81 kills to the Hawkeyes 62. Freshman Hillary Toivonen led IU with a career-best 23 kills. The outside hitter also dug out 10 balls and posted an impressive .304 attack percentage. Teammate Ryann Connors registered 20 kills while Cydryce Carter came up big defensively with a career-high 26 digs to go along with her 14 kills. Freshman setter Laurie Gardner also added a career-best with 66 assists.
"We started off slow and it was an ugly match in games one and two," said Katie Weismiller. "We felt that after the intermission that we really needed to pick it up and I feel that we played much more aggressively. Hillary had a strong night offensively for us with good shot selection and Cydryce really picked it up for us defensively, especially in games three and four where she dug a lot of balls. Overall, we are pleased anytime we can get a win on the road."
The Hoosiers will be back in action next week, hosting Michigan and Michigan
State, Oct. 22 and 23, respectively.
