LATE GOAL GIVES HOOSIERS 1-0 WIN AT NORTHWESTERN

Evanston, Ill. -With just under four minutes remaining (86:01), Yuri Lavrinenko's free kick gave the number-one ranked Indiana's men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over homestanding Northwestern at Lakeside Field. The Hoosiers are now 11-2-0 and 4-0-0 in Big Ten play, while the Wildcats drop to 1-11-0 and 1-3-0 in conference action.
According to IU coach Jerry Yeagley, this game was comparable to Friday's with Wisconsin. "This game was very similar to our game with Wisconsin." says Yeagley. "Northwestern packed it in defensively and we had a lot of chances. I have to give credit to their goalkeeper (Matt Keeler) he had a great game and they were excellent in defending."
The IU offense was active with 15 shots and nine corner kicks, compared to Northwestern's six shots and zero corner kicks. "We had our chances, but our finishing was not as sharp as it has been," continued Yeagley. "We again showed a lot of patience and new it was only a matter of time before we connected."
Goalie Doug Warren, from Palatine, Ill., and reserve Michael Bock, from Naperville, Ill., two Chicago-area IU freshmen, responded with excellent play in front of family and friends. "I thought Doug Warren played really well and Michael Bock came off the bench and gave our offense a big boost with some sharp play. Overall, it was a great weekend with two Big Ten wins on the road."
Indiana has now extended its winning streak to 10, while shutting-out the opposition in eight of those matches. The Hoosiers have only allowed three goals in the last 10 matches, while outscoring teams 30 to three during the current 10-game winning streak.
The Hoosiers are now 20-1-1 in their last 22 Big Ten Conference games. Indiana last lost to a conference opponent during the Big Ten season in 1995, when it dropped a 0-2 decision at Wisconsin. That 1995 Badger squad went on to capture the NCAA Championship. The only tie came against Penn State in 1996 at 1-1. Overall, Indiana is a dominating 38-4-2 in Big Ten games (beginning in 1991).
Indiana hosts Kentucky on Wednesday (Oct. 20) starting at 7 p.m. and Ohio State on Sunday (Oct. 24) at 2 p.m. The match with the Buckeyes will be shown live on the internet, a joint venture between Indiana University and Broadcast.com.
