HOOSIERS DEFEAT KENTUCKY 4-2

Bloomington, Ind.-Junior forward Matt Fundenberger's three goals lifted the number-one ranked Indiana men's soccer team to a 4-2 victory over a tough Kentucky squad at Bill Armstrong Stadium. The Hoosiers are now 12-2-0, while the Wildcats drop to 9-4-1. It was the second time in Fundenberger's IU career that he has scored a hat trick, the first coming against Rhode Island during his freshman year in 1997.
Though it was chilly evening, the action heated up quickly as Fundenberger scored his first of three goals at 1:18, a header on a cross from Yuri Lavrinenko. Fundenberger headed another shot into the goal at 33:18 with Aleksey Korol and Ryan Mack assisting on the play.
Kentucky's Jason Bell made the score 2-1 at 39:26 on an unassisted blast of a loose ball from about 17 yards away. The Hoosiers scored quickly again to the second half as Pat Noonan scored from 15 yards away on a pass from Lavrinenko.
The Wildcats were awarded a penalty kick after IU goalkeeper Doug Warren held a Kentucky player. UK's Lee Baker scored the PK at 71:04 to make the score 3-2. Whereupon, IU coach Jerry Yeagley replaced the freshman Warren with T.J. Hannig for the last 17 minutes. "I never like to take a goalkeeper out of a game," stated Yeagley. "But, with the score 3-2 and both goals given up were goalkeeper errors I made the change. I told him (Warren) that he is a great goalkeeper and he will be a great keeper for us and that he should learn from tonight's game."
Fundenberger then netted his third goal of the game at 83:15, again on a pass from Lavrinenko. "It was great to Fundenberger get three goals this evening. They were double-teaming Aleksey (Korol) tonight and that was the best defense that I've seen on him. Kentucky is a good team and was better in the air than we were. We had some great counters on own and I thought that Yuri (Lavrinenko) had a tremendous game," said Yeagley.
Indiana has now extended its winning streak to 11. The two goals allowed were the first since Penn State scored twice five games ago. The Hoosiers have only allowed five goals in the last 11 matches, while outscoring teams 34 to five during the current 11-game winning streak.
