Opening Statement: "As I said earlier in the Big Ten press conference, just give the credit to our players and to our coaching staff for getting our guys regrouped after the previous week and then hanging in there throughout the ball game. I don?t know how many more of those I can take or you can take but we?ll take it. Our focus goes right to today?s practice and getting better. I think that?s the key for us, just to continue to improve and focus on the things we can control. We know we know we?re going against a good Michigan football team that will come in here extremely motivated. As I said earlier, too, they beat Wisconsin at Wisconsin. You know how I feel about that football team in Madison. They?re an awfully good football team and that says all you need to know about the team that is coming in here to play us."
On the "right time" to play Michigan: "You know what you?re going against when you play Michigan. You?re playing a team that is going to play hard. They are extremely well coached in all three phases. You just have to get your team as ready to play as possible in the kicking game, on defense, and on offense. As you?ve seen around the country, on any given day anything can happen. Don?t think that isn?t an extremely good football team coming in here because it is. You?ll see it. I think it?s going to be a heckuva ball game."
On injuries: "I think we?re like most people. Pat Shaw is out for the year. Wally is out for the year. Other than that we have some guys who have some bumps and bruises. (Sophomore guard) Jamarkus Gorman is playing hurt which is a good sign. A couple of guys have gotten nicked up here and there but none that I think will be held out of the ball game."
On the most improved phase of the football team: "Probably just our attitude. I think just a willingness to stay together no matter what happens and a willingness to put team above self. I guess it?s always been a challenge for coaches to get players to do that but I think more now than ever because so much emphasis is put on the individual and individual success. You just have to continually get these guys to understand that they are part of a team and that we?re going to face adversity and the only chance we?ve got is if we stay together. It starts with that because I don?t care how much talent you have, if you?re going to divide you have no chance. We still have a lot ahead of us so we?re going to be challenged these next three games and over these next four weeks."
On Michigan bouncing back from loss vs. Illinois: "Michigan is a veteran football team. They?re a senior-dominated team. Over half of their starters are seniors. Those guys take great pride just like our guys do. You listen to what they?re saying up there and they?re saying really similar things to what we?ve said, ?How are you going to handle adversity? What are we going to find out about our character?We?ll have to stay together and we?ll have to get back to work.? It?s a lot of the same things we?ve said around here these last few weeks so we should understand it. Put all that aside. Now we?ve got to go out and practice like we understand it."
On the importance of this Saturday?s game: "It?s an opportunity because we?ve put ourselves in a position for it to be an opportunity. If we hadn?t been able to do what we?ve done the last four weeks...but we have. We?ve been digging ourselves out of a hole slowly. We?re just trying to concentrate on getting better. But, it is a great opportunity. Anytime you get a chance to play a conference team and you?re still in the thing it?s a great opportunity. We?re still in this thing. You look at who has to play one another over these next four weeks it?s going to be interesting."
