INDIANA DEFEATS PURDUE
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Indiana's volleyball team completed a season sweep of Purdue Friday evening defeating the Boilermakers 15-12, 13-15, 15-4, 15-5 in West Lafayette. Earlier this month, the Hoosiers swept Purdue for the Monon Spike in Bloomington.
With the victory, Indiana improved its season record to 14-6 overall and 5-6 in the Big Ten while Purdue fell to 12-8 overall and 4-7 in leauge play.
Senior outside hitter Ryann Connors became the school record holder for career kills, when she passed former standout Jen Magelssen's 1,387 career kills (1995-98) in game two of the evening. Connors ended the match with a match-high 20 kills to give her 1,400 kills for her career.
Teammate Cydryce Carter also recorded a milestone, collecting her 1,000 career-dig to move into fourth-place on the all-time charts.
The Hoosiers started the night slowly, falling behind 5-8 in game one. After an IU timeout, the Hoosiers battled back, going on a 10-4 run to take the victory 15-12.
Game two was tightly contested as both teams battled for the lead. With the game tied 12-all Purdue pulled ahead for good, winning 15-13. Game two also saw Connors collect her 1,388th career kill, becoming the school's all-time record holder. Connors passed former Hoosier standout Jen Magelssen (1995-98).
Indiana never trailed in game three or four, rolling15-4 and 15-5 wins.
Four Hoosiers registered double-figure kill totals led by Connors 20. Cydryce Carter posted 14 kills and 14 digs while Hillary Toivonen and Amanda Welter each added 13 kills apiece. Toivonen also added 16 digs.
As a team, Indiana posted 70 kills with a .249 attack percentage while Purdue struggled with a .161 hitting efficiency.
"This is a great win on the road for us tonight," said Katie Weismiller. "We started slowly but we stayed patient. Our offense didn't really come around until games three and four but our defense was there for us all night long."
The Hoosiers return to action Saturday playing Wisconsin at7 p.m., in the Wisconsin Field House in Madison.
