Bloomington, Ind. -- Indiana University's men's soccer squad showed why it is the nation's number one soccer team with a convincing 5-0 victory over in-state rival Butler. The Bulldogs did not register a shot or took a corner kick, while the Hoosiers attempted nine shots and had 11 corner kicks. Indiana is now 8-2-0, while Butler falls to 3-9-0.
Indiana got on the scoreboard in a hurry as senior forward Aleksey Korol scored IU's first three goals, for his first career three-goal match. Korol scored at 2:34 (assist from Matt Fundenberger), 14:24 (unassisted) and at 58:50 (assist from Justin Tauber). Says Korol on his first career hat trick, "It is very nice, the boys just gave me perfect balls."
Freshman Pat Noonan scored his third goal of the season at 61:53 on an assist from Justin Tauber and sophomore Ryan Mack scored his first goal of the year at 88:34 on an assist from Noonan to make the final score 5-0.
Hoosier Head Coach Jerry Yeagley was pleased with his team's dominance, but felt the team slowed down a little after posting a 2-0 lead. "The first 15 minutes of the match we were really dominant, but after that second goal I was a little disappointed. I felt that we took our foot off the pedal and I told the team at half-time that we need to come out in the second half and play like we were down 2-0. We also got some excellent play from Justin Tauber and I thought that Phil Presser came in off the bench and played really well."
A national player of the year candidate, Korol now has nine goals and three assists for 21 points. "He's a classy player," says Yeagley. "Tonight, he showed why he has to be a frontrunner for national player of the year."
Indiana hosts its other in-state rival the Evansville Aces (6-4) on Sunday, Oct. 10 at 2 p.m. at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
