INDIANA DEFEATS PURDUE, WINS MONON SPIKE MATCH
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana's volleyball team started a brand new home court win streak at University Gym Saturday evening, defeating Purdue 15-7, 15-7, 10-15, 15-11 in the annual Monon Spike match.
Playing to a crowd of 1,135 fans, the Hoosier (11-4 overall, 2-4 Big Ten) jumped on the Boilermakers (10-5 overall, 2-4 Big Ten) in the first two games. After the intermission, it still looked as if IU was in control, leading 8-2 in game three. But after a Purdue timeout, the Boilermakers rolled off nine-straight points to take an 11-9 lead. The Hoosiers could only manage one more point as Purdue went on to win the game 15-10.
The Hoosiers took the early lead in game four 10-6 before the Boilermakers scored three unanswered points to trail by one at 10-9 but an IU timeout shifted the momentum again as the Hoosiers won the game and match 15-11.
Seniors Ryann Connors and Cydryce Carter stepped up their play with Connors collecting 20 kills and 11 digs and Carter registering nine kills, 15 digs and six blocks. Amanda Welter and Laura Mettes also recorded double-figure kill matches with 13 and 11, respectively.
As a team, the Hoosiers posted a .276 attack percentage to Purdue's .160. Indiana also out dug Purdue 64-53 and were superior at the net with 14 blocks to the Boilers' nine.
"This was a big win for us tonight," said Katie Weismiller. "One, it was the Monon Spike match, two, it was Purdue and three, we know that if we are going to compete in the Big Ten and look to postseason play, we have to win at home. I also want to say that the fans were great. The fans were wonderful and we enjoyed their support."
The Hoosiers will be back in action next weekend, traveling to Minnesota
Friday, Oct. 15 and Iowa Saturday, Oct. 16.
