Indiana Falls to Purdue, 30-24
Bloomington, Ind. -- On a fourth-and-three play from the Purdue 21-yard line with less than 90 seconds remaining in the game, Indiana sophomore quarterback Antwaan Randle El was sacked for a five-yard loss which ultimately provided Purdue with a 30-24 win over Indiana before a sellout crowd of 51,344 at Memorial Stadium. Trailing 30-24, Indiana had taken over possession at its own 20-yard line with 4:46 remaining in the game and drove as far as the Purdue 19-yard line. On first down, Randle El completed a pass to Jerry Dorsey that picked up nine yards but Randle El was stepped on by his right guard on second down causing a two-yard loss. A third-down pass to Dorsey fell incomplete setting up the key fourth-down play.
Indiana jumped to a quick 7-0 lead in the first quarter when the Hoosiers drove 80 yards on nine plays and Randle El (33-22-329-1TD passing, 23-48-1TD rushing) connected with wide receiver Derin Graham on a 36-yard pass play. Purdue answered on its next offensive possession as the Boilers drove 90 yards on 11 plays. On third down-and-goal from the two-yard line, running back Montrell Lowe fumbled and guard Chucky Okobi recovered in the end zone for a touchdown to tie the game at 7-7.
Indiana wasted no time getting back on top as Randle El scored on a one-yard run with 3:32 remaining in the first quarter that capped a nine-play, 75-yard, drive. An Andy Payne extra point gave the Hoosiers a 14-7 advantage.
Purdue took advantage of a 54-yard punt on its next possession that was downed at the four-yard line. On first down, DB Adrian Beasley sacked Randle El for a safety that closed IU's lead to 14-9.
Both teams traded punts and Purdue took over at its own six-yard line with 11:43 remaining in the second quarter. Purdue would put together a 14-play, 94-yard, 6:42, drive that culminated in a one-yard touchdown run by Montrell Lowe. A two-point conversion from QB Drew Brees (24-15-197-0TDs passing) to WR Vinnie Sutherland gave Purdue a 17-14 lead.
To close the first half, the Hoosiers put together an impressive ball possession drive of their own as they marched 84 yards in 15 plays and connected on a 24-yard field goal by Andy Payne that tied the game at 17-17.
Purdue scored first in the second half on a 41-yard field goal by Travis Dorsch, pushing the Boilers' lead to 20-17. However, after both teams traded punts, Indiana drove 60 yards in 10 plays and junior fullback De'Wayne Hogan scored on a seven-yard run when he carried several Purdue defenders into the end zone. The run, and an Andy Payne extra point, gave the Hoosiers a 24-20 lead.
Early in the fourth quarter, Indiana's Drew Hagan punted 51 yards to Purdue's Vinnie Sutherland who returned it 66 yards for a touchdown with the help of an obvious clip on Indiana's Greg Yeldell.
On Indiana's next offensive possession the Hoosiers drove to the Purdue three-yard line but RB Levron Williams (8-24 rushing, 8-111 receiving) lost two yards following an option pitch from Randle El on fourth down and one. Indiana held Purdue on its next possession, setting up Indiana's final drive.
