INDIANA EARNS NCAA TOURNAMENT BID FOR SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - For the second-straight year, Indiana University's volleyball team has received a bid to compete in the 1999 NCAA Postseason Tournament. The Hoosiers will travel to Clemson, S.C., for a first round match against the No. 16 ranked Clemson Tigers (31-2). No. 17 Northern Iowa (28-0) will play Ball State (28-6) in the same bracket. The Hoosiers will face Clemson Thursday, Dec. 2. Match times have yet to be announced.
Indiana finished the regular season 19-10 overall, 10-10 in Big Ten Conference play, tying for fifth place with Ohio State and Michigan State. In all, eight Big Ten teams were awarded NCAA berths.
"I guess that we are all shocked and very excited," said Katie Weismiller. "We felt that we deserved it (the tournament bid) but knew that it was in the tournament committees hands. The team came satisfied into tonight's meeting, knowing they had won their last three matches and had done all that they could (upsetting No. 20 Minnesota Saturday evening), but now they know they have new life and we want to make the most of it."
For the Hoosiers, it is the second time in school history that IU has
earned a postseason berth under coach Katie Weismiller. Indiana made its
first trip to the NCAAs in 1995 when the Hoosiers played George Mason, losing
in three-straight games. Last season, IU defeated Northern Iowa before
advancing to the second round for the first time in school history, falling
to host Arkansas.
