ANDERSON, BLANCH ADVANCE TO ROUND OF 16
Columbus, OH - Jessica Anderson and Zahra Ahamed each advanced to the round of 16 at the ITA Midwest Regional Championship today.
Ahamed did not lost a game as she defeated Chicago State's Joanna Phang 6-0,6-0 in the opening round of the singles main draw. She then defeated teammate J.J. Levin in the second round 6-3,6-4. Levin had defeated Bowling Green's Erika Wasilewski 6-0,6-3 in the 1st round. Ahamed will play the top-seed Michelle Dasso of Notre Dame in the quarterfinals tomorrow.
Anderson defeated Emina Curic of Minnesota in her opening round match 6-1,6-4. In her second match of the day, Anderson got past Kim Simonsen 6-3,6-4 to advance. Tomorrow she will face either Natalya Dawaf of Iowa or Brooke Hart of Michigan.
Kelly Blanch defeated Cyra Malik of Western Michigan 6-4,7-5 in her opening match, before losing to the 3rd-seeded Kristy Dascoli of Ohio State 6-2,6-3.
Amanda Field lost to 2nd-seeded Jennifer Embry of Purdue 6-4,6-2 in the first round. She then was defeated by Ohio State's Briana Harris 6-3,6-3.
In the only doubles match played today, Field and Levin defeated Mainhard and Pandele of Detroit Mercy 6-0,6-1.
Head Coach Lin Loring said, "We have had a very good tournament so far. There are 35 schools that are participating this weekend and we have two girls in the round of 16 in singles and all three teams left in doubles."
The Hoosiers will continue with two singles and doubles rounds tomorrow. Play will begin at 9 a.m. with singles. Doubles will begin in the early afternoon.
