INDIANA LOSES BIG TEN OPENER TO MINNESOTA
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana women's basketball team dropped its Big Ten season opener to Minnesota 61-53 Thursday evening in Assembly Hall.
With the loss, the Hoosiers fall to 5-7 overall, 0-1 in the Big Ten while Minnesota improves to 7-4 overall and 1-0 in league play.
After falling behind 17-10 to open the game, the Hoosiers stormed back with a 14-0 run to go up 24-17. A 3-pointer by IU's Tara Jones gave Indiana an eight point lead 27-19 with 4:51 left in the half but then two three-pointers and a bucket by UM's Lindsay Lieser put the Gophers right back in the game with a 29-29 tie at the intermission.
The Hoosiers fought from behind most of the second half, but managed to pull ahead 50-47 with seven minutes remaining. From there, Minnesota went on a 14-3 run to win the game 61-53.
Heather Cassady led IU offensively with 18 points, including four first half 3-pointers. Teammate Jill Chapman also finished with double digits, collecting 12 points and nine rebounds.
As a team, IU shot just 38 percent from the field and posted 24 turnovers.
