Game Data: Indiana (19-3-0), ranked second nationally, battles third-ranked UCLA (19-2-0) in the national semifinals on Friday, December 10 at 6:30 p.m in the 1999 College Cup in Charlotte, N.C. Santa Clara and Connecticut will meet in the first game of the College Cup at 4 p.m. The championship will take place on Sunday, December 12 at 1 p.m.
Television: The Hoosier's semifinal game will be shown on a tape delayed on ESPN2 at 12:30 a.m. on Saturday. The championship will be shown live on ESPN on Sunday.
Indiana Head Coach Jerry Yeagley...is in his 27th year at Indiana and is the winningest coach in collegiate soccer history. He has a career record of 476-83-37. Yeagley has led the Hoosiers to NCAA national titles in 1982, 1983, 1988, and 1998, 13 College Cup appearances and eight Big Ten titles.
Yeagley was recently named Big Ten co-Coach of the Year, sharing the honor with Ohio State's John Bluem.
Hoosiers In the Polls: Indiana is number two in both the Soccer America Top 20 and the NSCCA/adidas Top 25.
Indiana 3, Penn State 0: Indiana defeated Penn State for the third time this season to advance to the College Cup. All three Hoosier goals came in the second half. Pat Noonan got Indiana on the board and Aleksey Korol scored twice in a span of 2:15.
Indiana 2, Washington 0: Aleksey Korol scored at the 6:14 mark and Ryan Mack scored just 45 seconds into the second half to carry Indiana to a 2-0 victory in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Indiana 1, Kentucky 0: Aleksey Korol scored at the 112:15 mark of the second overtime to give the Hoosiers a 1-0 victory over Kentucky in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
Scouting UCLA: Just like the Hoosiers, UCLA closed out the regular season with a loss. The Bruins then defeated San Diego (4-1), St. Louis (2-0) and Virginia (2-0) to advance to the College Cup. Sasha Victorine and McKinley Tennyson Jr. have both tallied 12 goals this season. Nick Rimando owns a 0.62 goals against average this season.
Series vs. UCLA: This is the third NCAA Tournament meeting between the Hoosiers and the Bruins. UCLA posted a 1-0 victory in the 1997 national semifinals. Indiana won in the national semifinals, 4-1, in 1994. Overall the Bruins own a 6-5 edge.
Series vs. Santa Clara: Indiana is 1-2 against Santa Clara in NCAA Tournament play and 1-3 overall. The lone victory came in the 1998 national semifinals.
Series vs. Connecticut: Indiana and Connecticut have never met in NCAA Tournament play. The Hoosiers have won two of the three all-time meetings between the two teams.
Hermann Trophy Finalists: Indiana's Aleksey Korol and Nick Garcia are two of the five finalists for the 1999 Hermann Trophy as the nation's top collegiate soccer player. The award will be given out on December 11 at the College Cup.
Hoosiers' Success in NCAA Tournament: Indiana is 53-19 overall in NCAA Tournament play. The Hoosiers own a a 9-3 mark in the national semifinals as they make their 13th College Cup appearance in 26 seasons and their third straight.
Indiana won the NCAA crown in 1982, 1983, 1988 and 1998.
Winningest Team in the Decade: Indiana's victory over Penn State made the Hoosiers' the winningest team in the 90's. Indiana is 183-33-14 (.826) this decade.
Looking to Repeat: Indiana is looking to become the first team to win back-to-back national championships since Virginia accomplished the feat in 1993 and 1994.
Shutout in NCAA Play: Indiana has not allowed a goal in NCAA Tournament play in its last 361:25. Stanford last scored against the Hoosiers in tournament play in the national championship game last season.
Overall on the season Indiana has not a allowed a goal in its last 362:51 of play as Penn State was the last team to score on the Hoosiers back in the Big Ten championship game.
Ironic ending: After losing to James Madison to end the regular season, IU hopes to be as successful as it was in 1998. Last year Indiana lost to U.C.L.A. on the road in its last regular season game and then won the Big Ten Championship and its fourth national title.
Korol Rhymes with Goal: National Player of the Year Candidate Aleksey Korol leads Indiana with 20 goals and eight assists for 48 points.
He is the seventh IU player to score 20 or more goals in a season and his 48 points is the 10th highest single season mark. He is looking to become the fifth player in Indiana history to score 50 points in a season (last Ken Snow 1989).
He has scored at least one goal in five straight games and at least one in eight of the last nine games.
Korol now ranks fifth on the IU all-time list with 57 career-goals. His 139 career-points ranks him fourth.
Lavrinenko on a Run: Yuri Lavrinenko has scored at least one point in every one of the Hoosiers' post season games dating back to the Big Ten Tournament. His point scoring string is currently at five and he has one goal and four assists in that span.
Korol Named Big Ten Player of the Year: Aleksey Korol became the fifth Hoosier to earn Big Ten Player of the Year honors. It is the third straight season that an Indiana player has won the award.
All-Big Ten: Aleksey Korol earned All-Big Ten first team honors for the fourth straight season. Yuri Lavrinenko, Matt Fundenberger and Nick Garcia joined Korol on the first team. Dennis Fadeski and Ryan Mack earned second team honors.
Indiana vs. Ranked Teams in 1999: Indiana sports a 6-1-0 mark vs. nationally ranked teams. IU defeated #2 Maryland 1-0, lost to #18 Saint Louis 1-0 in overtime, defeated #1 ranked Penn State 4-2, and defeated #19 Ohio State 2-1. All four of those games were in Bloomington. The Hoosiers defeated #5 Penn State 2-1 in overtime for the Big Ten crown. Indiana knocked off 11th-ranked Washington in the second round of the NCAA Tournament and sixth-ranked Penn State in the third round.
FANtastic Attendance: During Indiana's eight-game regular season home schedule this year, 17,325 fans passed through the Bill Armstrong Stadium turnstiles for an average of 2,166 fans per game.
