GAME #27 FACTS: Indiana (18-8, 5-6) vs. Northwestern (14-7, 6-5). Saturday (Feb. 13). Welsh-Ryan Arena (8,117), Evanston, Ill. Game time is 2:30 p.m. ET/1:30 p.m. CT.
GAME DATA: The Indiana Hoosiers play the second of two games this week today at Northwestern. IU played six of its first nine conference games on the road this season, but today is the first road game in almost two weeks. The Hoosiers come into today's game 18-8 overall and 5-6 in league play after losing to Purdue Tuesday 86-81 in overtime.
TELEVISION: The Northwestern game will be broadcast by ESPN Regional. Tom Hamilton and Steve Yoder call the action.
RADIO: Every IU game can be heard on the IU Radio Network. Don Fischer, Bob Hammel, Joe Smith and Norm Ellenberger call the action. The pregame fun begins 40 minutes prior to tipoff.
INDIANA HEAD COACH BOB KNIGHT. . . is college basketball's winningest active head coach with 738 victories (all games at the Division I level). He is just one of 12 NCAA coaches all-time to have recorded 700 or more victories. He is in his 28th season as the Indiana head coach and has a record of 636-228 (.736). Knight is in his 34th season as a collegiate head coach and has an overall record of 738-278 (.726). Knight's record in Big Ten play is 339-144 (.702). He has led the Hoosiers to three NCAA titles (1976, 1981 and 1987) and a conference record 11 Big Ten Championships (1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993). He was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame in May of 1991. Knight is 48-3 vs. Northwestern overall and while at Indiana.
THE SERIES: Indiana and Northwestern are meeting for the 136th time. The Hoosiers lead the series 96-39 after winning this season's earlier game 81-78 in Bloomington. Indiana has won the last 20 games in the series and 26 of the last 27 overall. IU leads the series in games played at Northwestern 38-25 and have won the last 10 in Welsh-Ryan Arena.
HOOSIERS IN THE POLLS: The Hoosiers are 15th in this week's ESPN/USA Today and 17th in the Associated Press rankings.
ANOTHER WINNING SEASON: Indiana has assured itself of its 29th consecutive winning season. Every Coach Knight team (28 years) at Indiana has had a winning season. During Knight's tenure in Bloomington, Indiana is the only school in the Big Ten to register an overall winning record each year. Along those same lines with 9 conference victories a year ago, the Hoosiers have 25 (out of 27) non-losing conference seasons under Knight.
AGAINST THE BEST: Indiana is 4-7 this season against teams that were ranked when the Hoosiers played them. Indiana defeated Utah, Temple, Purdue and Wisconsin while losing to Syracuse, Kentucky, Iowa, Ohio State, Michigan State, Minnesota and Purdue.
LAST GAME: (Purdue 86, Indiana 81, ot): Jaraan Cornell scored seven of his 14 points in overtime as Purdue defeated Indiana 86-81 after overcoming a nine-point second-half deficit. Brian Cardinal led the Boilermakers with 21 points, Carson Cunningham added 17 and Greg McQuay had 15 points, nine rebounds and five blocks. Indiana got 24 points from A. J. Guyton, 21 from Luke Recker and 18 from reserve Kirk Haston. The score was tied four times in the overtime before Cornell's 3-pointer gave Purdue an 84-81 lead with 33.5 seconds left. Indiana worked the clock down, but Michael Lewis' 3-point attempt bounced off the rim and Purdue grabbed the rebound. Alan Eldridge then added two free throws with 10.6 seconds left for the Boilermakers. Indiana took its biggest lead at 55-46 with 13:34 left. Purdue got back into the game with seven consecutive points, including a 3-pointer and a jumper by Cunningham. The Boilermakers tied the score at 63-63 and 65-65 before taking a 69 65 lead on a layup by Cardinal and a jumper by McQuay. A layup by Recker and a 6-foot hook by Haston tied the game again at 69-69. Cardinal's layup gave Purdue a 71-69 edge with 4:03 remaining and Haston knotted the score once more on a layup. William Gladness gave Indiana its final lead at 73-71 on a dunk with 3:09 left. Cornell's 11-footer tied the game at 73-73 with 2:56 left and both teams failed to score in regulation.
THIS SEASON'S PREVIOUS MEETING: Indiana 81, Northwestern 78, Bloomington, Jan. 13: Indiana returned to Assembly Hall and survived a big second-half comeback to beat Northwestern 81-78. It was the Hoosiers' 29th consecutive victory at home against Northwestern over the past 31 years. Indiana led by 5 points at halftime and built its lead to 16 midway through the second half before the rally by Northwestern. Evan Eschmeyer had 27 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists to lead the Wildcats and hit two free throws that pulled the Wildcats within 74-70 with 4:43 to go. Nate Pomeday added two more free throws, and Northwestern tied the game with 3:30 remaining on a basket by Tavaras Hardy that completed a 24-8 run. The Hoosiers regained the lead on a 3-pointer by William Gladness, and Luke Recker's final basket put Indiana up 79-74. After offsetting baskets, Northwestern had a final chance to tie when Gladness missed as the shot clock ran out with 12 seconds to go. But David Newman missed a 3-pointer, and Recker got the rebound as the game ended. Recker led IU with a season-high tying 28 points. A.J. Guyton added 18 points for the Hoosiers, while Michael Lewis finished with 14 and Gladness 13. Hardy and Sean Wink each had 13 points for the Wildcats. Northwestern stayed close in the first half with 3 pointers. Eight of the Wildcats' 11 field goals in the first half were 3s, including one by Steve Lepore that stopped a 16-3 Indiana run midway through the half. A10-0 run, including 3-point plays by Lewis and Recker, helped the Hoosiers to their biggest lead, 66-50 with 11 minutes left. A 3-pointer by Wink and three straight baskets by Eschmeyer then started the Northwestern comeback.
EXTRA TIME SETS RECORD: Indiana's overtime game against Purdue was its fifth of the season (IU defeated Notre Dame and Penn State and lost to Kentucky and Minnesota). The five overtime games is the most Indiana has played in any one season in school history. The Hoosiers have now played overtime in three of the last four games. Last year the Hoosiers played only one overtime game (vs. Oklahoma in the first round of the NCAA Tournament). IU played four overtime games in 1997.
DOESN'T HAPPEN VERY OFTEN: Purdue shot an opponents' season-high 58.6% from the field Tuesday. That was only the third time this season (Syracuse and Northwestern) an opponent has shot better than 50%.
CAREER MARKS ALREADY: A number of Indiana players have already set career season-highs. Luke Recker has in points (417), 3-point shooting (50-135), free throw attempts (108) and needs just four more steals to pass his last year's total of 48. Rob Turner has in steals (10). William Gladness has in assists (43) and also needs just four more steals to pass his last year's totals of 42. Larry Richardson has in assists (8), blocks (17) and steals (6).
GUYTON AND RECKER ­ IMPORTANT TO THE CAUSE: When A.J. Guyton and Luke Recker combined for 30 or more points for the Hoosiers, it is usually a good sign of success for the team. This has happened 28 times in their careers and Indiana is 22-6 in those games. The tandem combined to score 45 points vs. Purdue earlier this week and that is the first time they have scored 40 or more points and the Hoosiers have lost (9-0 previously). They have done that six times this season (41 vs. UAB, 44 at Notre Dame, 46 vs. Northwestern, 45 at Purdue, a career best 53 at Penn State and 45 vs. Purdue). In games they haven't combined to score 30 or more the Hoosiers are 16-14.
GUYTON AND RECKER FROM 3: A.J. Guyton and Luke Recker have combined for more than 100 3-pointers this season for the second consecutive season. This is the first time in school history two players have accomplished this in consecutive years. They have 108 this season and had 113 a year ago. The best mark is 122 set by Brian Evans and Neil Reed in 1996 while Steve Alford and Keith Smart combined for 119 in 1987. Other duos include Guyton and Neil Reed (113, in 1997); Jay Edwards and Joe Hillman (106 in 1989) and Calbert Cheaney and Greg Graham (104 in 1993).
UNBEATEN SEASON STREAK CONTINUES: As there are no unbeaten teams remaining in Division I, Indiana remains the last Division I basketball team to go undefeated in a season as the Hoosiers were 32-0 in 1976. This streaks has now stood for 23 years.
THE GUYTON CHRONICLE: A.J. Guyton has been IU's catalyst over the last few weeks. He made the game-tying (in the first overtime) and the game winning shots (both 3-pointers) at Penn State as he scored a career-high 33 points. He is now Indiana's most prolific 3-point shooter with career totals of 193-466. Guyton made 7 3-pointers against the Nittany Lions which tied a career-high. His 33 points was the third time in his career he has scored 30 or more. Besides all of this, he is also on his best scoring stretch of the season. He has registered double figures in a season-high eight consecutive games and has raised his scoring average from 13.5 to 16.4 during this span. He has averaged 23 points per game over the last eight games and has shot 47.2% (68-144) from the field and 44% (29-66) from 3-point range. He has scored at least 20 points in all of these games except two. His 16 3-point attempts against Penn State tied his single game school record which he set earlier this season at Ohio State. His career point total of 1,414 is 16th on the all-time list. He needs 14 points to move into 15th (Ray Tolbert, 1,427).
LEWIS' PASSING FANCY: Michael Lewis has taken a commanding team lead in assists with some recent good play. He has registered 57 assists (just 13 turnovers) in the last seven games in an average of over 36 minutes per game. He has also averaged 9.3 points per game during this stretch. The junior has 67 assists and just 22 turnovers in conference play (339 minutes). He has 358 career assists which is 7th on Indiana's all-time list (Steve Alford is 6th with 385).
HITTING THE BOARDS: Indiana holds a +24 rebounding edge over its opponents in the last three games. This includes a +17 margin at Penn State (52-35) and a +12 mark vs. Wisconsin (37-25). The 52 rebounds marked the first time since 1994-95 that IU had managed to grab 50 or more rebounds in a game (52 vs. Arkansas-Little Rock).
SEASON MARKS MAKING THE GRADE: Several team marks this season have already found themselves among the all-time bests at Indiana. The following are now all in the top 10: 155 3-point field goals (7th), 422 3 point attempts (for 5th) and 215 steals (tied for 6th).
BALANCED ATTACK BODES WELL: If the Hoosiers spread around the scoring attack they usually win. IU has won all nine games this season when they have at least four players score in double figures.
LOTS OF GAMES: The 15 games Indiana played this non-conference season is the most in school history before the Big Ten season. The previous high was 14 set in 1988-89 and 1996-97). The most non-conference games Indiana has ever played in a season is 17 which occurred in 1981, 1989 and 1993.
SLOW BIG TEN START USUALLY MEANS STRONG FINISH: During Coach Knight's tenure at Indiana, the Hoosiers have started the league season 1 3 three previous times. IU came back from those starts to post winning seasons each year. The previous three 1-3 starts came in 1978 (finished 12-6), 1979 (10-8) and 1988 (11-7).
ON THE DEFENSE: The Hoosiers are holding their opponents to 67.1 points per game, the lowest opponent average on record since 1991-92 when Indiana allowed 65.8 points a game. The opponents are shooting 42.1% from the field. That is the lowest opponent field goal shooting percentage for the season since 1996-97 when IU opponents shot 42.2%.
KEY NUMBERS: There are a few numbers that apparently are indicators of IU success. According to the numbers, IU needs to grab the halftime lead, as the Hoosiers are 13-3 when leading after the first 20 minutes (plus they're 1-0 when tied at the half). Conversely, the Hoosiers are 4-5 when trailing at half. Additionally, the Hoosiers are 15-3 when scoring more than 70 points, 9-1 when shooting 50% or better, 10-1 when garnering more rebounds and 17-2 when shooting better than their opponents.
DOUBLE YOUR FUN: William Gladness leads the Hoosiers this season with five double-doubles. Kirk Haston is next with four double-figure point rebound games. Luke Recker had 10 points and 10 assists vs. San Francisco and had his second of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds at Penn State. Michael Lewis registered one with season-highs of 14 points and 11 assists vs. Northwestern. Lynn Washington has his first career double with 12 points and 10 rebounds at Purdue.
RECORDS THIS SEASON: Good play earlier this season has translated into team school records and other marks being set. Indiana attempted a school record 31 3-pointers at Penn State. Indiana's 12 blocks vs. San Francisco is the most in school history (old mark was 11 set twice before). Indiana's 88.9% 3-point field goal percentage vs. San Francisco tied the school record set once before. Indiana's 20 steals vs. Drake is a school record (old mark was 19 set twice before). Indiana's 29 assists vs. San Francisco was the second-highest single game total in school history (30 vs. Northwestern, 1981). Indiana's 66.7% field goal percentage vs. San Francisco (40-60) tied for the eighth-highest mark in school history (set five previous times).
COMEBACK KIDS: Indiana has had the ability to come back in games this season. Indiana was down by 16 points in the first half at Penn State before coming back to lead at the half and win in double overtime. The Hoosiers notched their fifth come-from-behind victory as they erased a 4 point halftime deficit vs. Ball State. Indiana's last second victory over Temple was the fourth come-from-behind victory of the season. With 8:42 left, IU was down by 9 (52-43) and with 3:54 left, IU was 6 points down (56-50). They trailed by 19 at the half (45-26) to Indiana State and came back and won 76-70. They trailed by 18 (47-29) with 18:50 to play vs. Kansas State and won 71-70 and they trailed by 11 (45-34) with 17:03 to play vs. Notre Dame and won. IU was down by 9 with 68 seconds to play vs. Kentucky and managed to tie the game and send it into overtime.
WINS AND LOSSES: There have been some interesting differences in the 18 wins and 8 losses. IU has shot 49.2% in the wins but just 42.9% in the losses. The Hoosiers have also shot 39.4% in the victories and just 31.8% in the losses from 3-point range. IU's rebounding margin is +2.2 in the wins but in the losses it drops to -6. The Hoosiers also average 23.6 free throw attempts in the wins and just 14.3 in the losses. In the six conference losses, the Hoosiers are allowing 78.5 points per game and are shooting just 54% from the foul line. They have also averaged just 66.8 points a game in those losses.
FROM THE FIELD: The Hoosiers have shot 50.8% (221-435) over the last seven games and have been better than 50% in four of those games during this span. Indiana has shot 50% or better 10 times. Indiana comes into today's game shooting 47.3%. Indiana is 17-2 when outshooting its opponents. Indiana attempted 88 field goals against Penn State which was the highest for an Indiana team in 23 years. The last time IU attempted more than 80 was March 6, 1976 when it had 85 against Ohio State.
LONG RANGERS: Indiana made 7-21 3's vs. Purdue but missed all 8 attempts in the second half and in overtime. Guyton and Recker have made 69% of the team's 3's this season (108 of 155). The Hoosiers made 10 (ties for third-highest total in school history) of 31 (school record) at Penn State which were both season-highs. For the season, IU has shot at least 40% nine times. IU has been under 36% from long range 12 times this season.
CHARITY TOSSES: Indiana's troubles from the foul line have returned in the last two games. IU has made just 18-35 (51.4%) including tying a season-low by going 6-14 vs. Purdue. Indiana has shot 70% or better only twice in the conference season and just nine times all season. The Hoosiers are shooting just 66.7% from the line. Over the years one of Indiana's keys to success has been making more free throws than its opponents attempt. This year IU has made 360 but the opponents have attempted 442.
BOARD REPORT: Indiana has outrebounded its last three opponents by an average of 8.0 per game. The Hoosiers have lost the rebounding wars six times in conference play. Indiana has also been getting to the offensive glass as it has averaged 14 per contest in the last two games. IU's rebounding average in league play is now equal at 35.5 per game.
ASSIST ANGLE: The Hoosiers have averaged 18.5 apg over the last four games which includes conference season-highs of 20 against Purdue and Minnesota. IU has posted at least 20 assists six times this season. The Hoosiers lead the league in assists at 16.7 per game. Indiana had an assist on 64.6% of their field goals last season but are at 60.1% this year. Indiana has tallied more assists than their opponents 15 times this season. The Hoosiers have had only eight games this season where they have had more turnovers than assists.
TURNOVER TALE: The Hoosiers are 13-4 when they commit the same or less number of turnovers as their opponent. IU leads in the league in assist/turnover ratio at 1.16. The Hoosiers have averaged just 11.5 in the last two games. The season average is 14.3 (15.3 last season). The Hoosiers have had less than 15 turnovers in six league games after doing so in 10 non-conference games.
A STEAL OF A TIME: Indiana has 215 steals (8.3 per game). In the last eight games, IU has averaged just 4.1 a game. IU is third in the league in steals. Indiana has had 10 games in which it has registered at least 9 steals and eight games in double figures. The Hoosiers set a school record with 20 vs. Drake.
ON THE DEFENSE: The Hoosiers have held 10 opponents under 40% from the field this year after doing so only 8 times all of last season. However, in 10 league games the opponent has been above 40%. The Hoosiers went through one stretch this season where they allowed no more than 10 field goals in six of seven consecutive halves (second half of Indiana State game through Utah game). Indiana has also allowed single figures in field goals in 11 halves. IU's opponents come into today's game shooting 42.1% from the field.
POINT PRODUCTION: The Hoosiers average 79.8 ppg in the five conference wins but just 66.8 ppg in the losses. The Hoosiers scored 67 points in the second half vs. USF which was more points than the team has scored in eight games this season. Indiana has managed to score 80 or more points nine times this season. When the Hoosiers do score 80 or more points it usually means a victory. During Coach Knight's 28 years the Hoosiers are 308-20 when scoring 80 or more, 144-4 when scoring 90 or more and 46 0 when scoring 100 or more points.
BLOCK PARTY: Indiana has just 24 blocks in league play. IU had 12 blocks vs. USF which was only the seventh time in school history an Indiana team has registered double figures in blocks. Kirk Haston leads the team with 21. The Hoosiers are averaging 3.2 blocks per game after averaging 3.9 a year ago.
BIG WINNERS: When the Hoosiers win they usually have a tendency to win big. Last season they won 13 games by 11 or more points and 19 contests by 6 or more points. This season the margin of victory stands at 16.2 points per game. However, Indiana is 6-1 this season in games decided by 5 points or less.
DID YOU KNOW... over the last eight years the Hoosiers have led the Big Ten in scoring? During this span IU has averaged 79.1 points per game in conference play and have finished in the top half of the league in scoring every season.
ONE OF THE TOPS IN THE NATION: During the 1990's Indiana has been one of the top teams in college basketball. The Hoosiers have won 214 games this decade which makes them one of only 13 teams to have won 200 or more games during this span.
