HOOSIERS STRUGGLE IN SAN DIEGOWomen's Water Polo off to rough start
San Diego, Calif.--The Indiana Women's Water Polo team dropped its opening two matches Friday in the UC San Diego Arena Invitational. The Hoosiers (0-2) dropped an 11-2 decision to seventh ranked San Diego State (1-0) and fell to second ranked California, 20-1.
Against San Diego State, the 11th ranked Hoosiers fell behind 4-0 in the first period and trailed 6-1 at the half. Sophomore Sheri Fagley scored Indiana's lone first half goal. Freshman driver Melissa DeBiasse notched her first collegiate goal in the fourth period. The Aztecs were led by the four goals of Larisa Baltgalvis as seven different players scored for SDSU.
Indiana found itself in an even deeper hole at the half against California (1-0), trailing 9-0. Sophomore Deb Simone scored her first goal of the season in the fourth but it wasn't enough as 12 Golden Bear players scored.
The Hoosiers are back in action today in consolation bracket play. They take on 12th ranked UC San Diego (0-4) at 4:50 p.m. EST and the third place team from Group C at 11:50 p.m. EST. Indiana will finish tournament play on Sunday against 15th ranked Long Beach State (1-2) at 3:50 p.m. EST.
