GAME #28 FACTS: Ohio State (19-6, 9-3) vs. Indiana (19-8, 6-6). Wednesday (Feb. 17). Assembly Hall (17,357), Bloomington, Ind. Game time is 8 p.m. ET.
GAME DATA: The Indiana Hoosiers play the first of two games this week tonight vs. Ohio State. Tonight's game begins a stretch of three of the last four of the regular season at home for the Hoosiers. The Hoosiers come into tonight's game 19-8 overall and 6-6 in league play after winning at Northwestern Saturday 69-62 in overtime.
TELEVISION: The Ohio State game will be broadcast by ESPN Regional. John Laskowski and Ted Kitchel call the action.
RADIO: Every IU game can be heard on the IU Radio Network. Don Fischer, Bob Hammel, Joe Smith and Norm Ellenberger call the action. The pregame fun begins 40 minutes prior to tipoff.
INDIANA HEAD COACH BOB KNIGHT is college basketball's winningest active head coach with 739 victories (all games at the Division I level). He is just one of 12 NCAA coaches all-time to have recorded 700 or more victories. He is in his 28th season as the Indiana head coach and has a record of 637-228 (.736). Knight is in his 34th season as a collegiate head coach and has an overall record of 739-278 (.727). Knight's record in Big Ten play is 340-144 (.702). He has led the Hoosiers to three NCAA titles (1976, 1981 and 1987) and a conference record 11 Big Ten Championships (1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993). He was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame in May of 1991. Knight is 39-16 vs. Ohio State overall and 37-16 while at Indiana.
THE SERIES: Indiana and Ohio State are meeting for the 157th time. The Hoosiers lead the series 92-64 after Ohio State won this season's earlier game 73-56 in Columbus. That loss broke a four-game series winning streak for the Hoosiers. Indiana has still won eight of the last 10 meetings. The Hoosiers have won the last seven games between the teams in Assembly Hall. IU is also 24-2 all-time vs. the Buckeyes in Assembly Hall. Indiana leads the series 56-19 in games played in Bloomington.
HOOSIERS IN THE POLLS: The Hoosiers are 16th in this week's ESPN/USA Today and 19th in the Associated Press rankings.
ANOTHER WINNING SEASON: Indiana has assured itself of its 29th consecutive winning season. Every Coach Knight team (28 years) at Indiana has had a winning season. During Knight's tenure in Bloomington, Indiana is the only school in the Big Ten to register an overall winning record each year. Along those same lines with 9 conference victories a year ago, the Hoosiers have 25 (out of 27) non-losing conference seasons under Knight.
AGAINST THE BEST: Indiana is 4-7 this season against teams that were ranked when the Hoosiers played them. Indiana defeated Utah, Temple, Purdue and Wisconsin while losing to Syracuse, Kentucky, Iowa, Ohio State, Michigan State, Minnesota and Purdue.
IOWA GAME TIME SET: Indiana's final regular season game against Iowa has been scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 27 at 4:30 p.m. in Assembly Hall. The game will be televised by ESPN Regional and can be heard on the IU Radio Network.
LAST GAME: (Indiana 69, Northwestern 62, ot): Lynn Washington's only points of the game, a follow shot with 3:16 to play, triggered a 7-0 spurt as Indiana held Northwestern scoreless in overtime for a 69-62 victory. A.J. Guyton scored 22 points and Luke Recker added 21 for the Hoosiers, who were pushed to overtime for the fourth time in their last five games. Looking to stop Northwestern's inside-outside game, Indiana switched to a matchup zone that befuddled the Wildcats for a majority of the second half and all of overtime. Indiana held Northwestern scoreless for the final 7:19 of the game, not allowing a point after Steve Lepore's 3-pointer with 2:20 to play gave Northwestern a 62-59 lead. Guyton sealed the victory with four free throws in the final 39 seconds for Indiana, which extended its winning streak over the Wildcats to 21 games, including the last 11 at Welsh-Ryan Arena. David Newman scored 18 points and Evan Eschmeyer added 12 and 14 rebounds before fouling out for Northwestern. Using Eschmeyer as a hub for kick-out passes for 3-pointers by Newman, Lepore and Sean Wink, Northwestern opened a 52-43 lead with 12:30 to play on a long-range shot by Wink. Northwestern still led 57-52 after Tavaras Hardy hit a driving layup at the 8:23 mark, but Knight switched to the matchup zone at this point, giving the Hoosiers a second defender to guard Eschmeyer in the post. Kirk Haston sank two free throws and a seven footer to pull Indiana within 57-56 with 6:19 left before Recker drilled a 3-pointer from the top of the key to give Indiana its largest lead of regulation at 59-57. Eschmeyer's only basket after halftime tied the game, 59-59, with 4:25 to go in the second half. Neither team scored again until Lepore's 3-pointer, Northwestern's 12th of the contest. The Hoosiers tied the game on their next possession as Recker came off a screen and hit a 3-pointer to make it 62-62 with 1:48 remaining. Eschmeyer picked up his fourth foul with seven minutes left in the second half but had a key block on Recker in the final minute, giving Northwestern a chance to win in regulation. Newman's off-balance eight-footer in the closing seconds was off the mark and Indiana never got off a shot before overtime. Newman committed turnovers on Northwestern's first two overtime possessions. Washington followed Recker's miss with the only basket of the extra session to make it 64-62. The teams traded empty possessions before Eschmeyer missed a six-foot hook shot. Haston got Eschmeyer to foul out with 1:40 to play and made 1-of-2 free throws. Wink and Julian Bonner missed shots before Guyton sank two foul shots with 39 seconds to go, extending the lead to 67-62. Haston tallied 11 points and 10 rebounds for Indiana, which shot 46% (23-50) and made 6 of-11 3-pointers. The Wildcats were12-27 from beyond the arc and shot 38% (23-61) overall. Newman hit his first five 3-point shots and finished 6-of-11 from 3-point range.
THIS SEASON'S PREVIOUS MEETING: Ohio State 73, Indiana 56, Columbus, Jan. 9: Jon Sanderson scored 6 points in a 9-0 run to start the second half and Indiana never recovered as Ohio State won 73-56. Ohio State led 35 30 at the half. After Indiana's Luke Recker missed a 3-pointer, Sanderson was fouled as he hit an 8-foot bank shot in the lane, then added the free throw. Indiana missed its next shot, with Sanderson following by hitting a 3 pointer from the left side. Moments later Scoonie Penn hit another 3 pointer to push the lead to 44-30. The Hoosiers never would get closer than eight points again. A.J. Guyton carried the offensive load for the Hoosiers with 27 points. Recker, Indiana's leading scorer averaging 16.8 points a game, scored his only points with 10:20 left. He was just 1-6 from the field. Jason Singleton scored 17 points, Michael Redd added 14, Penn had 12 and Sanderson 10 for the Buckeyes. Neither team led by more than 4 points until Ohio State pulled away with a 9-0 run midway through the first half. Indiana's Kirk Haston hit a hook shot in the lane to cut the Buckeyes' lead to 21-20 with 8:17 left. The Hoosiers would not score for the next 2:48, missing one shot from the field and turning the ball over on three straight possessions. George Reese hit a free throw and missed the second, but Sanderson tipped it in for a basket. After a turnover, the Buckeyes hit their next three shots. Redd started it with a layup off a backdoor cut with Reese assisting. Redd then scored on a fastbreak layup before Singleton hit a short shot off an inbounds play to make it 30-20. The Hoosiers got as close as 32-28 on Guyton's fourth 3-pointer of the half. Guyton, who had 14 points in the opening half, scored Indiana's first 9 points of the second half. Over the final 4 minutes of the first half and first 7 minutes of the second, Guyton accounted for 12 of the Hoosiers' 14 points. The Buckeyes dominated the boards, 40-27, with Ken Johnson leading the way with 11.
EXTRA TIME SETS RECORD: Indiana's overtime game against Northwestern was its sixth of the season (IU defeated Notre Dame, Penn State and Northwestern and lost to Kentucky, Minnesota and vs. Purdue). The six overtime games is the most IU has played in any one season in school history and ties the Big Ten record set previously by Ohio State in 1982. The Hoosiers have now played overtime in four of the last five games. The NCAA record for overtime games in a season is 8 held by Western Kentucky (1978), Portland (1984) and Valparaiso (1984).
QUITE THE TURNAROUND: After allowing Purdue to shoot an opponents' season-high 58.6% from the field , the Hoosiers held Northwestern to just 37.7%. That was just the second time in the conference season that an opponent has shot less than 40%. The Hoosiers also held Northwestern scoreless for the last 7:19 of the game.
CAREER MARKS ALREADY: A number of Indiana players have already set career season-highs. Luke Recker has in points (438), field goals (152 344), 3-point shooting (53-140), free throws attempts (114) and needs just three more steals to pass his last year's total of 48. Rob Turner has in steals (11). William Gladness has in assists (43) and also needs just four more steals to pass his last year's totals of 42. Larry Richardson has in assists (8), blocks (17) and steals (7).
GUYTON AND RECKER ­ IMPORTANT TO THE CAUSE: When A.J. Guyton and Luke Recker combined for 30 or more points for the Hoosiers, it is usually a good sign of success for the team. This has happened 29 times in their careers and Indiana is 23-6 in those games. The tandem combined to score 43 at Northwestern and the team is now 10-1 when they do this in their career. They have done this seven times this season (41 vs. UAB, 44 at Notre Dame, 46 vs. Northwestern, 45 at Purdue, a career best 53 at Penn State, 45 vs. Purdue and 43 at Northwestern). In games they haven't combined to score 30 or more the Hoosiers are 16-14.
GUYTON AND RECKER FROM 3: A.J. Guyton and Luke Recker have combined for more than 100 3-pointers this season for the second consecutive season. This is the first time in school history two players have accomplished this in consecutive years. They have 113 this season and had that same amount a year ago. The best mark is 122 set by Brian Evans and Neil Reed in 1996 while Steve Alford and Keith Smart combined for 119 in 1987. Other duos include Guyton and Neil Reed (113, in 1997); Jay Edwards and Joe Hillman (106 in 1989) and Calbert Cheaney and Greg Graham (104 in 1993).
UNBEATEN SEASON STREAK CONTINUES: As there are no unbeaten teams remaining in Division I, Indiana remains the last Division I basketball team to go undefeated in a season as the Hoosiers were 32-0 in 1976. This streaks has now stood for 23 years.
THE GUYTON CHRONICLE: A.J. Guyton has been IU's catalyst over the last few weeks. He made the game-tying (in the first overtime) and the game winning shots (both 3-pointers) at Penn State as he scored a career-high 33 points. He is now Indiana's most prolific 3-point shooter with career totals of 195-470. Guyton made 7 3-pointers against the Nittany Lions which tied a career-high. His 33 points was the third time in his career he has scored 30 or more. Besides all of this, he is also on his best scoring stretch of the season. He has registered double figures in a career-high nine consecutive games and has raised his scoring average from 13.5 to 16.6 during this span. He has averaged 22.8 points per game over the last nine games and has shot 47.2% (76-161) from the field and 44.2% (31-70) from 3-point range. He has scored at least 20 points in all of these games except two. His 16 3-point attempts against Penn State tied his single game school record which he set earlier this season at Ohio State. His career point total of 1,436 is 15th on the all-time list. He needs 6 points to move into 14th (Walt Bellamy, 1,441).
LEWIS' PASSING FANCY: Michael Lewis has taken a commanding team lead in assists with some recent good play. He has registered 57 assists (just 13 turnovers) in the last seven games in which he has played (average of over 36 minutes per game). He has also averaged 9.3 points per game during this stretch. The junior has 67 assists and just 22 turnovers in conference play (339 minutes). He has 358 career assists which is 7th on Indiana's all-time list (Steve Alford is 6th with 385).
HITTING THE BOARDS: Indiana holds a +24 rebounding edge over its opponents in the last four games. This includes a +17 margin at Penn State (52-35) and a +12 mark vs. Wisconsin (37-25). The 52 rebounds marked the first time since 1994-95 that IU has managed to grab 50 or more rebounds in a game (52 vs. Arkansas-Little Rock).
SEASON MARKS MAKING THE GRADE: Several team marks this season have already found themselves among the all-time bests at Indiana. The following are now all in the top 10: 161 3-point field goals (7th), 433 3 point attempts (for 5th) and 220 steals (5th).
BALANCED ATTACK BODES WELL: If the Hoosiers spread around the scoring attack they usually win. IU has won all nine games this season when they have at least four players score in double figures.
LOTS OF GAMES: The 15 games Indiana played this non-conference season is the most in school history before the Big Ten season. The previous high was 14 set in 1988-89 and 1996-97). The most non-conference games Indiana has ever played in a season is 17 which occurred in 1981, 1989 and 1993.
SLOW BIG TEN START USUALLY MEANS STRONG FINISH: During Coach Knight's tenure at Indiana, the Hoosiers have started the league season 1 3 three previous times. IU came back from those starts to post winning seasons each year. The previous three 1-3 starts came in 1978 (finished 12-6), 1979 (10-8) and 1988 (11-7).
ON THE DEFENSE: The Hoosiers are holding their opponents to 67.6 points per game, the lowest opponent average on record since 1991-92 when Indiana allowed 65.8 points a game. The opponents are shooting 41.9% from the field. That is the lowest opponent field goal shooting percentage for the season since 1996-97 when IU opponents shot 42.2%.
KEY NUMBERS: There are a few numbers that apparently are indicators of IU success. According to the numbers, IU needs to grab the halftime lead, as the Hoosiers are 13-3 when leading after the first 20 minutes (plus they're 1-0 when tied at the half). Conversely, the Hoosiers are 5-5 when trailing at half. Additionally, the Hoosiers are 15-3 when scoring more than 70 points, 9-1 when shooting 50% or better, 10-1 when garnering more rebounds and 18-2 when shooting better than their opponents.
DOUBLE YOUR FUN: William Gladness and Kirk Haston lead the Hoosiers this season with five double-doubles. Kirk Haston had 11 points and 10 rebounds at Northwestern. Luke Recker had 10 points and 10 assists vs. San Francisco and had his second of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds at Penn State. Michael Lewis registered one with season-highs of 14 points and 11 assists vs. Northwestern. Lynn Washington has his first career double with 12 points and 10 rebounds at Purdue.
RECORDS THIS SEASON: Good play earlier this season has translated into team school records and other marks being set. Indiana attempted a school record 31 3-pointers at Penn State. Indiana's 12 blocks vs. San Francisco is the most in school history (old mark was 11 set twice before). Indiana's 88.9% 3-point field goal percentage vs. San Francisco tied the school record set once before. Indiana's 20 steals vs. Drake is a school record (old mark was 19 set twice before). Indiana's 29 assists vs. San Francisco was the second-highest single game total in school history (30 vs. Northwestern, 1981). Indiana's 66.7% field goal percentage vs. San Francisco (40-60) tied for the eighth-highest mark in school history (set five previous times).
COMEBACK KIDS: Indiana has had the ability to come back in games this season. Indiana was down by 16 points in the first half at Penn State before coming back to lead at the half and win in double overtime. The Hoosiers notched their fifth come-from-behind victory as they erased a 4 point halftime deficit vs. Ball State. Indiana's last second victory over Temple was the fourth come-from-behind victory of the season. With 8:42 left, IU was down by 9 (52-43) and with 3:54 left, IU was 6 points down (56-50). They trailed by 19 at the half (45-26) to Indiana State and came back and won 76-70. They trailed by 18 (47-29) with 18:50 to play vs. Kansas State and won 71-70 and they trailed by 11 (45-34) with 17:03 to play vs. Notre Dame and won. IU was down by 9 with 68 seconds to play vs. Kentucky and managed to tie the game and send it into overtime.
WINS AND LOSSES: There have been some interesting differences in the 19 wins and 8 losses. IU has shot 49.1% in the wins but just 42.9% in the losses. The Hoosiers have also shot 40% in the victories and just 31.8% in the losses from 3-point range. IU's rebounding margin is +2 in the wins but in the losses it drops to -6. The Hoosiers also average 23.5 free throw attempts in the wins and just 14.3 in the losses. In the six conference losses, the Hoosiers are allowing 78.5 points per game and are shooting just 54% from the foul line. They have also averaged just 66.8 points a game in those losses.
FROM THE FIELD: The Hoosiers have shot 50.3% (244-485) over the last eight games and have been better than 50% in four of those games. Indiana has shot 50% or better 10 times. Indiana comes into tonight's game shooting 47.2%. Indiana attempted 88 field goals against Penn State which was the highest for an Indiana team in 23 years. The last time IU attempted more than 80 was March 6, 1976 when it had 85 against Ohio State.
LONG RANGERS: Indiana connect on 6-11 3's at Northwestern which was a conference season-high (54.5%). Guyton and Recker have made 70% of the team's 3's this season (113 of 161). The Hoosiers made 10 (ties for third-highest total in school history) of 31 (school record) at Penn State which were both season-highs. For the season, IU has shot at least 40% 10 times. IU has been under 36% from long range 12 times this season.
CHARITY TOSSES: Indiana's snapped out of its free throw troubles with a 17-21 (81%) effort at Northwestern (IU had made just 18-35 ­ 51.4% ­ in the two previous games). Indiana has shot 70% or better only three times in conference play and just 10 times all season. The Hoosiers are shooting just 67.2% from the line. Over the years one of Indiana's keys to success has been making more free throws than its opponents attempt. This year IU has made 377 but the opponents have attempted 447.
BOARD REPORT: Indiana has outrebounded its last four opponents by an average of 6.0 per game. The Hoosiers have lost the rebounding wars six times in conference play. Indiana has also been getting to the offensive glass as it has averaged 12.4 per contest in the last four games. IU's rebounding average in league play is now equal at 35.3 per game.
ASSIST ANGLE: The Hoosiers have averaged 17 apg over the last five games which includes conference season-highs of 20 against Purdue and Minnesota. IU has posted at least 20 assists six times this season. The Hoosiers lead the league in assists at 16.5 per game. Indiana has tallied more assists than their opponents 15 times this season. The Hoosiers have had only nine games this season where they have had more turnovers than assists.
TURNOVER TALE: The Hoosiers are 14-4 when they commit the same or less number of turnovers as their opponent. IU leads the league in assist/turnover ratio at 1.16. The Hoosiers have averaged just 11.7 in the last three games. The season average is 14.2 (15.3 last season). The Hoosiers have had less than 15 turnovers in seven league games after doing so in 10 non-conference games.
A STEAL OF A TIME: Indiana has 220 steals (8.1 per game). However, the Hoosiers have not tallied more than 7 in any of the last nine games. IU is third in the league in steals. Indiana has had 10 games in which it has registered at least 9 steals and eight games in double figures. The Hoosiers set a school record with 20 vs. Drake.
ON THE DEFENSE: The Hoosiers have held 11 opponents under 40% from the field this year after doing so only 8 times all of last season. However, in 10 league games the opponent has been above 40%. The Hoosiers went through one stretch this season where they allowed no more than 10 field goals in six of seven consecutive halves (second half of Indiana State game through Utah game). Indiana has also allowed single figures in field goals in 12 halves. IU's opponents come into tonight's game shooting 41.9% from the field.
POINT PRODUCTION: The Hoosiers average 78 ppg in the six conference wins but just 66.8 ppg in the losses. The Hoosiers scored 67 points in the second half vs. USF which was more points than the team has scored in eight games this season. Indiana has managed to score 80 or more points nine times this season. When the Hoosiers do score 80 or more points it usually means a victory. During Coach Knight's 28 years the Hoosiers are 308-20 when scoring 80 or more, 144-4 when scoring 90 or more and 46 0 when scoring 100 or more points.
BLOCK PARTY: Indiana has just 26 blocks in league play. IU had 12 blocks vs. USF which was only the seventh time in school history an Indiana team has registered double figures in blocks. Kirk Haston leads the team with 22. The Hoosiers are averaging 3.1 blocks per game after averaging 3.9 a year ago.
BIG WINNERS: When the Hoosiers win they usually have a tendency to win big. Last season they won 13 games by 11 or more points and 19 contests by 6 or more points. This season the margin of victory stands at 15.7 points per game. However, Indiana is 6-1 this season in games decided by 5 points or less.
DID YOU KNOW... over the last eight years the Hoosiers have led the Big Ten in scoring? During this span IU has averaged 79.1 points per game in conference play and have finished in the top half of the league in scoring every season.
ONE OF THE TOPS IN THE NATION: During the 1990's Indiana has been one of the top teams in college basketball. The Hoosiers have won 214 games this decade which makes them one of only 13 teams to have won 200 or more games during this span.
HOOSIERS IN ASSEMBLY HALL: The Hoosiers are 338-46 (.880) in Assembly Hall including a 202-39 (.838) record in Big Ten games. Since the beginning of the 1990-91 season the Hoosiers are 104-13 (.889) in Assembly Hall. Indiana is also 65-26 (.714) vs. ranked teams in the building.
