HOOSIERS GRAB FIRST WIN OF THE SEASONMcKay's three goals in second period sparks Indiana
Bloomington, Ind.--The Indiana Women's Water Polo team snapped a five match losing streak with a 10-4 victory over #20 Michigan State in the Tortilla Flat Indiana Invitational. Sophomore Kelly McKay scored four goals, including three straight in the second period, to help the 14th ranked Hoosiers (1-5) to their first win of the season.
The Hoosiers did their main damage in the second period, thanks to McKay and sophomore Kristin Carpenter. With it tied at one a piece, Carpenter drilled a shot from the top of the point to give Indiana its first lead of the match. Carpenter scored three times, including a third period goal off of a long ball from freshman goalkeeper Kirsten Mayberry.
Three minutes later, McKay swung past her defender and slammed a shot past Spartan goalkeeper Karin Robertson to give Indiana a 3-1 lead. McKay scored twice in the next two minutes to put Indiana up 5-1 at the break. She also added three assists.
Indiana Head Coach Barry King was pleased with the win but felt his team came out flat. "We came out flat and allowed them to take the game to us," King said. "We have a lot to work on and we need to pick up the intensity."
In other tournament action, 15th ranked Michigan (9-2) took care of Miami of Ohio (5-2), 11-3. Junior Rachel Knighton and sophomore Melissa Karajala both chipped in three goals a piece for the Wolverines.
In tonight's evening session, Miami of Ohio takes on Michigan State at 7pm while the Hoosiers face Michigan at 8:15pm.
