WOLVERINES OUTLAST HOOSIERSIndiana loses for first time at home
Bloomington, Ind.--The Indiana Women's Water Polo team dropped an 8-6 decision to the 15th ranked Michigan Wolverines tonight in the Tortilla Flat Indiana Invitational.
Sophomore Melissa Karjala scored three times as the Wolverines (10-2) became the first team to beat Indiana at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center in their two years as a varsity program. The 14th ranked Hoosiers played without leading scorer Kelly McKay, who broke her finger in this morning's win over Michigan State.
The Hoosiers (1-6) fell behind 3-0 midway through the second period until Kristin Carpenter's scored with less than two minutes left in the period. After a Michigan goal, Molly Fonner scored twice at the end of the period to pull Indiana within one, 4-3.
Indiana tied the match at four on Kara Fellerhoff's goal 17 seconds into the third period. Michigan scored two more third period goals to take a two goal lead until Deb Simone fired home a penalty shot to cut it to 6-5.
Indiana would get no closer as the Wolverines used two lob shots by Karjala and Delia Sonda to take the lead back up to three goals.
In other tournament action, #20 Michigan State defeated Miami of Ohio 7-4.
The tournament continues tomorrow as Michigan takes on Michigan State at 9:15am and Indiana battles Miami of Ohio at 10:30am.
