HOOSIERS SHOOT DOWN REDHAWKSIndiana gets second win of the season
Bloomington, Ind.--The 14th ranked Indiana Women's Water Polo team routed the Miami of Ohio RedHawks 11-3 this morning in the Tortilla Flat Indiana Invitational.
Molly Fonner and Deb Simone each scored three goals as the Hoosiers (2-6) went 2-1 for the weekend. This was Indiana's first match against an opponent not ranked in the US Water Polo Top 20.
Indiana Head Coach Barry King said of his team's performance, "It was a better effort all around. We're starting to pick up our defense which helps translate into easier goals."
The swarming Hoosier defense forced 21 RedHawk turnovers as Simone swiped eight balls to go along with three assists.
The Hoosiers held a 4-0 lead with time running down at the end of the second period when Simone hit a long shot as time expired. Indiana sealed the game with five third period goals, including two goals from Fonner.
In other tournament action, Michigan squeaked by Michigan State, 4-3, thanks to Melissa Carjala's fourth period goal with 4:41 to play.
The Hoosiers are off until March 6-7, when they host the Hoosier Classic at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center.
