GAME #30 FACTS: Indiana (20-9, 7-7) vs. Illinois (11-16, 3-12). Wednesday (Feb. 24). Assembly Hall (16,450), Champaign, Ill. Game time is 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT.
GAME DATA: The Indiana Hoosiers play their second to last regular season game this evening at Illinois. Indiana finishes the regular season at home against Iowa. The Hoosiers come into tonight's game 20-9 overall and 7-7 in league play following its 73-71 victory over Michigan Sunday.
TELEVISION: The Illinois game will be broadcast by ESPN Regional. Mike Gleason and John Laskowski call the action.

INDIANA HEAD COACH BOB KNIGHT. . . is college basketball's winningest active head coach with 740 victories (all games at the Division I level). He is just one of 12 NCAA coaches all-time to have recorded 700 or more victories. He is in his 28th season as the Indiana head coach and has a record of 638-229 (.736). Knight is in his 34th season as a collegiate head coach and has an overall record of 740-279 (.726). Knight's record in Big Ten play is 341-145 (.702). He has led the Hoosiers to three NCAA titles (1976, 1981 and 1987) and a conference record 11 Big Ten Championships (1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993). He was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame in May of 1991. Knight is 36-16 vs. Illinois overall and 34-16 while at Indiana.
THE SERIES: Indiana and Illinois are meeting for the 140th time. The Hoosiers lead the series 74-65. Indiana won this season's first game 62 53 in Bloomington. That victory broke a three-game losing streak to the Illini but Indiana has won four of the last seven. Indiana has also won four of the last seven meetings at Illinois. Illinois leads the series 40-29 in games played in Champaign.
HOOSIERS IN THE POLLS: The Hoosiers are 17th in this week's ESPN/USA Today and 20th in the Associated Press rankings.
ANOTHER WINNING SEASON: Indiana has assured itself of its 29th consecutive winning season. Every Coach Knight team (28 years) at Indiana has had a winning season. During Knight's tenure in Bloomington, Indiana is the only school in the Big Ten to register an overall winning record each year. Along those same lines with 9 conference victories a year ago, the Hoosiers have 25 (out of 27) non-losing conference seasons under Knight.
AGAINST THE BEST: Indiana is 4-8 this season against teams that were ranked when the Hoosiers played them. Indiana defeated Utah, Temple, Purdue and Wisconsin while losing to Syracuse, Kentucky, Iowa, Ohio State (twice), Michigan State, Minnesota and Purdue.
LAST GAME: (Indiana 73, Michigan 71): Luke Recker hit 22 of 25 free throws and finished with 24 points as Indiana went nearly 13 minutes without a field goal to defeat Michigan 73-71. Indiana capitalized on foul problems of the Wolverines by outscoring them 32-12 from the line. Recker, a 71 percent foul shooter this season, had a streak of 20 consecutive free throws snapped on his 15th attempt. Larry Richardson set a career high for the second consecutive game with 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Hoosiers. A turnaround jumper by Richardson gave Indiana a 51-41 lead with 14:57 left and two free throws by Kirk Haston gave the Hoosiers their biggest lead of the game with14:21 to play. Indiana didn't get another field goal until A.J. Guyton's 3-pointer with 2:17 left, giving the Hoosiers a 73-69 lead. Louis Bullock, who led Michigan with 22 points, hit a jumper with two minutes to play to cut the Wolverines' deficit to two points. Recker was 18-for-21 from the foul line in the second half but chose an inopportune time to miss a pair -- with Indiana leading 73-71 at the 1:50 mark. Bullock nearly sent the game into overtime in the final seconds after Haston missed a jumper and the Wolverines got the ball with 16.5 seconds left. After a timeout, Bullock drove the lane but his jumper bounced off the rim and time ran out following a scramble for the rebound. Richardson also had career-highs for field goals (8), field-goal attempts (15) and minutes played (37) and was the defender on Bullock's final shot -- his 24th of the game. Indiana shot only 30 percent (6-of-20) from the field in the second half but hit 23 of 29 free throws. Michigan, which had three players foul out, got 13 points from Pete Vignier and 11 from Robbie Reid, who was 3-of-13 from the field. Haston contributed 14 points to the victory and Guyton had 13. Indiana led most of the game, moving ahead for good 10-9 on a jumper by Richardson. The Hoosiers went on to lead by 11 twice in the first half and led 37-30 at the break.
THIS SEASON'S PREVIOUS MEETING: Indiana 62, Illinois 53, Bloomington, Jan. 3: With only 7,249 fans in Assembly Hall because of a weekend winter storm that walloped the state, the Hoosiers got 23 points from Luke Recker and turned 18 turnovers into 21 points in a 62-53 victory over Illinois. Indiana coach Bob Knight told his players before the game not to expect the same kind of support they usually get at home. "That's what good teams do," Knight said. ``That becomes the difference in teams. The teams that don't care about the circumstances, the teams that only care about the fact that a game is scheduled and play, those are the teams that are always the better teams. The other teams that involve themselves with circumstance never win anything." After dropping the Big Ten season-opener to Iowa, the Hoosiers rebounded with their first conference victory of the season. The win also broke the Hoosiers' three-game losing streak against the Illini. Indiana started slowly, shooting 0-10 from behind the 3-point line in the first half. But the Hoosiers made 3-9 3 pointers in the second half. Down 38-37 with 11:54 left, Recker hit three 3-pointers in a row and Kirk Haston's jumper completed an 11-1 Indiana run. Illinois pulled within five points twice, but was never able to get closer than that. A.J. Guyton scored 14 points and had seven rebounds for the Hoosiers. Cory Bradford led the Illini with 17 points and Damir Krupalija grabbed 16 rebounds. Neither team shot well. Illinois made 34.5% of its shots from the field while Indiana connected on 36.4%.
RICHARDSON'S CAREER GAMES: Junior Larry Richardson posted his second consecutive career game against Michigan with career bests of 18 points, 12 rebounds and 37 minutes. That came on the heels of a 15 point, 9 rebound game against Ohio State. The double-double vs. Michigan was the first of his career.
LOTS OF CHARITY: Luke Recker connected on 22 of 25 free throws vs. Michigan. Both of those career-high totals rank third on Indiana's all-time free throws made and attempt list (Greg Graham is tops at 26-28 vs. Purdue in 1993). As a team, the Hoosiers made 32 of 41 which were season-highs.
FRESHMAN OF INFLUENCE: Kirk Haston's recent play has vaulted him into becoming one of the top freshmen in the conference. He is the second leading freshman scorer in the league (conference games only) at 9.9 per game. He is also the top freshman rebounder at 6.9 per game.
DEFENSE ROUNDING INTO FORM: The Hoosiers have held two of their last three opponents under 40% from the field and 38.5% (72-187) overall in these three games. This is the best three-game field goal percentage defensive stretch in conference play in 1999 for the Hoosiers. IU has also held its opponents to just 69.6 ppg over the last five games.
20/20: Indiana has 20 wins which marks the 20th time in Coach Bob Knight's 28 years the team has reached this seasonal milestone. The 20th victory also gave Indiana its 1,450th all-time win. The Hoosiers have won 20 or more games in each of the last three seasons which is the first time this has happened since 1992-94.
RECKER'S STEAL OF A DEAL: Sophomore Luke Recker has 50 steals which ties for the fifth-highest single season total in school history (Steve Alford had the same amount in 1986). Mike Woodson is fourth on the list with 53 steals in 1979.
HOOSIERS TOP CONFERENCE IN SHOOTING: Indiana is the top shooting team in the Big Ten with a percentage of 46% (conference games only). The Hoosiers are third in the league in all games shooting at 47%. Indiana also leads the league in assists at 15.4 per game.
EXTRA TIME SETS RECORD: Indiana's overtime game against Northwestern was its sixth of the season (IU defeated Notre Dame, Penn State and Northwestern and lost to Kentucky, Minnesota and vs. Purdue). The six overtime games is the most IU has played in any one season in school history and ties the Big Ten record set previously by Ohio State in 1982. The NCAA record for overtime games in a season is 8 held by Western Kentucky (1978), Portland (1984) and Valparaiso (1994).
CAREER MARKS ALREADY: A number of Indiana players have already set career season-highs. Luke Recker has in points (469), field goals (156 362), 3-point shooting (54-145), free throws (103-114) and steals (50). Rob Turner has in steals (11). A.J. Guyton needs two more rebounds for a career best 113. William Gladness has in assists (44) and also needs just four more steals to pass his last year's totals of 42. Larry Richardson has in points (100), assists (9), blocks (20) and steals (7).
UNBEATEN SEASON STREAK CONTINUES: As there are no unbeaten teams remaining in Division I, Indiana remains the last Division I basketball team to go undefeated in a season as the Hoosiers were 32-0 in 1976. This streaks has now stood for 23 years.
GUYTON AND RECKER ­ IMPORTANT TO THE CAUSE: When A.J. Guyton and Luke Recker combined for 30 or more points for the Hoosiers, it is usually a good sign of success for the team. This has happened 30 times and Indiana is 24-6 in those games. The tandem combined to score 43 at Northwestern and the team is now 10-1 when they have scored 40 or more in their career. They have done this seven times this season (41 vs. UAB, 44 at Notre Dame, 46 vs. Northwestern, 45 at Purdue, a career best 53 at Penn State, 45 vs. Purdue and 43 at Northwestern). In games they haven't combined to score 30 or more the Hoosiers are 16-15.
GUYTON AND RECKER FROM 3: A.J. Guyton and Luke Recker have combined for more than 100 3-pointers for the second consecutive season. This is the first time in school history two players have accomplished this in consecutive years. They have 118 this season and had 113 a year ago. The best mark is 122 set by Brian Evans and Neil Reed in 1996 while Steve Alford and Keith Smart combined for 119 in 1987. Other duos include Guyton and Neil Reed (113, in 1997); Jay Edwards and Joe Hillman (106 in 1989) and Calbert Cheaney and Greg Graham (104 in 1993).
THE GUYTON CHRONICLES: A.J. Guyton is on the best scoring run of his career as he has reached double figures in each of the last 11 games. During this span he made the game-tying (in the first overtime) and the game-winning shots (both 3-pointers) at Penn State as he scored a career-high 33 points. He is now Indiana's most prolific 3-point shooter with career totals of 199-479. Guyton made 7 3-pointers against the Nittany Lions which tied a career-high. His 33 points was the third time in his career he has scored 30 or more. He has raised his scoring average from 13.5 to 16.4 during this 11-game span. He has averaged 21.1 points per game over the last 11 games and has shot 46.7% (85-182) from the field and 44.3% (35-79) from 3-point range. He has scored at least 20 points in all of these games except four. His 16 3-point attempts against Penn State tied his single game school record which he set earlier this season at Ohio State. His career point total of 1,463 is 14th on the all time list. He has a ways to go before moving up any further as Archie Dees is in 13th place with 1,546 points.
LEWIS' PASSING FANCY: Michael Lewis has taken a commanding team lead in assists with some recent good play. He has registered 70 assists (just 18 turnovers) in the last nine games in which he has played (average of almost 34 minutes per game). The junior is also second in the league in assists behind MSU's Mateen Cleaves. He has also averaged 9.1 points per game during this stretch. The junior has 80 assists and just 27 turnovers in conference play (394 minutes). He has 371 career assists which is 7th on Indiana's all-time list (Steve Alford is 6th with 385).
SEASON MARKS MAKING THE GRADE: Several team marks this season have already found themselves among the all-time bests at Indiana. The following are now all in the top 10: 167 3-point field goals (6th), 451 3 point attempts (5th) and 231 steals (4th).
BALANCED ATTACK BODES WELL: If the Hoosiers spread around the scoring attack they usually win. IU has won all 10 games this season when they have at least four players score in double figures. This happened for the first time in five games as IU accomplished this against Michigan.
LOTS OF GAMES: The 15 games Indiana played this non-conference season is the most in school history before the Big Ten season. The previous high was 14 set in 1988-89 and 1996-97). The most non-conference games Indiana has ever played in a season is 17 which occurred in 1981, 1989 and 1993.
SLOW BIG TEN START USUALLY MEANS STRONG FINISH: During Coach Knight's tenure at Indiana, the Hoosiers have started the league season 1 3 three previous times. IU came back from those starts to post winning seasons each year. The previous three 1-3 starts came in 1978 (finished 12-6), 1979 (10-8) and 1988 (11-7).
ON THE DEFENSE: The Hoosiers are holding their opponents to 67.8 points per game, the lowest opponent average on record since 1991-92 when Indiana allowed 65.8 points a game. The opponents are shooting 41.7% from the field. That is the lowest opponent field goal shooting percentage for the season since 1996-97 when IU opponents shot 42.2%.
KEY NUMBERS: There are a few numbers that apparently are indicators of IU success. According to the numbers, IU needs to grab the halftime lead, as the Hoosiers are 14-3 when leading after the first 20 minutes (plus they're 1-0 when tied at the half). Conversely, the Hoosiers are 5-6 when trailing at half. Additionally, the Hoosiers are 16-3 when scoring more than 70 points, 9-1 when shooting 50% or better, 10-1 when garnering more rebounds and 19-3 when shooting better than their opponents.
DOUBLE YOUR FUN: William Gladness and Kirk Haston lead the Hoosiers this season with five double-doubles. Luke Recker had 10 points and 10 assists vs. San Francisco and had his second of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds at Penn State. Michael Lewis registered one with season highs of 14 points and 11 assists vs. Northwestern. Lynn Washington has his first career double with 12 points and 10 rebounds at Purdue. Larry Richardson had his first career double with 18 points and 12 rebounds vs. Michigan.
RECORDS THIS SEASON: Good play earlier this season has translated into team school records and other marks being set. Indiana attempted a school record 31 3-pointers at Penn State. Indiana's 12 blocks vs. San Francisco is the most in school history (old mark was 11 set twice before). Indiana's 88.9% 3-point field goal percentage vs. San Francisco tied the school record set once before. Indiana's 20 steals vs. Drake is a school record (old mark was 19 set twice before). Indiana's 29 assists vs. San Francisco was the second-highest single game total in school history (30 vs. Northwestern, 1981). Indiana's 66.7% field goal percentage vs. San Francisco (40-60) tied for the eighth-highest mark in school history (set five previous times).
COMEBACK KIDS: Indiana has had the ability to come back in games this season. Indiana was down by 16 points in the first half at Penn State before coming back to lead at the half and win in double overtime. The Hoosiers notched their fifth come-from-behind victory as they erased a 4 point halftime deficit vs. Ball State. Indiana's last second victory over Temple was the fourth come-from-behind victory of the season. With 8:42 left, IU was down by 9 (52-43) and with 3:54 left, IU was 6 points down (56-50). They trailed by 19 at the half (45-26) to Indiana State and came back and won 76-70. They trailed by 18 (47-29) with 18:50 to play vs. Kansas State and won 71-70 and they trailed by 11 (45-34) with 17:03 to play vs. Notre Dame and won. IU was down by 9 with 68 seconds to play vs. Kentucky and managed to tie the game and send it into overtime.
WINS AND LOSSES: There have been some interesting differences in the 20 wins and 9 losses. IU has shot 48.8% in the wins but just 43.1% in the losses. The Hoosiers have also shot 40.1% in the victories and just 31.4% in the losses from 3-point range. IU's rebounding margin is +1.7 in the wins but in the losses it drops to -5.6. The Hoosiers also average 24.4 free throw attempts in the wins and just 14.6 in the losses. In the seven conference losses, the Hoosiers are allowing 77.1 points per game and are shooting just 58.3% from the foul line. They have also averaged just 66.9 points a game in those losses.
FROM THE FIELD: The Hoosiers field goal percentage has been dropping over the last five games. IU shot 51.9% vs. Wisconsin but then has gone 48.6, 46, 44.6 and 42.2% in each of the last four games. Indiana's longest sub-50% stretch of the season has been six games (Kansas State through Kentucky). Indiana has shot 50% or better 10 times. Indiana comes into tonight's game shooting 47%. Indiana attempted 88 field goals against Penn State which was the highest for an Indiana team in 23 years. The last time IU attempted more than 80 was March 6, 1976 when it had 85 against Ohio State.
LONG RANGERS: Indiana tied a season-low by going just 3-7 from long range vs. Michigan. The Hoosiers have gone 12-29 (41.6%) over the last three games. Guyton and Recker have made 71% of the team's 3's this season (118 of 167). The Hoosiers made 10 (ties for third-highest total in school history) of 31 (school record) at Penn State which were both season-highs. For the season, IU has shot at least 40% 11 times. IU has been under 36% from long range 13 times this season.
CHARITY TOSSES: Indiana has rediscovered its touch from the foul line as they have made 63 of its last 81 (77.8%) over the last three games. IU had made just 18-35 (51.4%) in the two previous games. IU has shot 70% or better only five times in conference play and just 12 times all season (but in each of the last three games). The Hoosiers are shooting just 68.2% from the line. Over the years one of Indiana's keys to success has been making more free throws than its opponents attempt. This year IU has made 423 but the opponents have attempted 490.
BOARD REPORT: Indiana had posted a +29 rebounding margin in games against Penn State and Wisconsin. However, in the last four games that has dropped to -13. The Hoosiers have lost the rebounding wars eight times in conference play. IU's rebounding margin in league play is just 0.6 per game.
ASSIST ANGLE: The Hoosiers lead the league in assists at 16.5 per game. IU has posted at least 20 assists six times this season. Indiana has tallied more assists than their opponents 16 times. The Hoosiers have had only nine games where they have had more turnovers than assists.
TURNOVER TALE: The Hoosiers are 15-4 when they commit the same or less number of turnovers as their opponent. IU is tied for the lead in the league in assist/turnover ratio at 1.16. The season average is 14.3 (15.3 last season). The Hoosiers have had less than 15 turnovers in eight league games after doing so in 10 non-conference games.
A STEAL OF A TIME: Indiana has 231 steals (8.1 per game). However, the Hoosiers have not tallied more than 7 in any of the last 11 games. Indiana has had 10 games in which it has registered at least 9 steals and eight games in double figures. The Hoosiers set a school record with 20 vs. Drake.
ON THE DEFENSE: The Hoosiers have held 12 opponents under 40% from the field this year after doing so only 8 times all of last season. However, in 11 league games the opponent has been above 40%. The Hoosiers went through one stretch this season where they allowed no more than 10 field goals in six of seven consecutive halves (second half of Indiana State game through Utah game). Indiana has also allowed single figures in field goals in 12 halves. IU's opponents come into tonight's game shooting 41.7% from the field.
POINT PRODUCTION: The Hoosiers average 77.3 ppg in the seven conference wins but just 66.9 ppg in the losses. The Hoosiers scored 67 points in the second half vs. USF which was more points than the team has scored in eight games this season. Indiana has managed to score 80 or more points nine times this season. When the Hoosiers do score 80 or more points it usually means a victory. During Coach Knight's 28 years the Hoosiers are 308-20 when scoring 80 or more, 144-4 when scoring 90 or more and 46 0 when scoring 100 or more points.
BLOCK PARTY: Indiana had a conference season-high 7 blocks vs. Michigan. IU had 12 blocks vs. USF which was only the seventh time in school history an Indiana team has registered double figures in blocks. Kirk Haston leads the team with 25. The Hoosiers are averaging 3.3 blocks per game after averaging 3.9 a year ago.
BIG WINNERS: When the Hoosiers win they usually have a tendency to win big. Last season they won 13 games by 11 or more points and 19 contests by 6 or more points. This season the margin of victory stands at 15 points per game. However, Indiana is 7-2 this season in games decided by 5 points or less.
DID YOU KNOW... over the last eight years the Hoosiers have led the Big Ten in scoring? During this span IU has averaged 79.1 points per game in conference play and have finished in the top half of the league in scoring every season.
ONE OF THE TOPS IN THE NATION: During the 1990's Indiana has been one of the top teams in college basketball. The Hoosiers have won 214 games this decade which makes them one of only 13 teams to have won 200 or more games during this span.
