HOOSIERS LOSE AT MICHIGANCINDY KERNS SCORES 37 POINTS
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Despite a career-high 37 points from senior Cindy Kerns, the Hoosiers still fell short of victory, dropping their ninth-consecutive game at Michigan 94-85 Sunday afternoon in Crisler Arena.
With the loss Indiana drops to 13-17 overall, 2-14 in the Big Ten, while Michigan completes the regular season 16-9 overall and 8-8 in the Big Ten.
Kerns, who became just the fifth player in school history to score 37 or more points, fell just three points short of the school record of 40 points set by Karna Abram in 1987. Other individual positives for IU in the game was senior point guard Kristi Green becoming just the 15th player in school history to score her 1,000th career point.
Despite trailing 54-42 at the half the Hoosiers made a game of it in the second stanza with a 14-4 run to pull within three points 76-73 on a Cindy Kerns 3-pointer with 7:42 remaining. Indiana stayed in the game but could get no closer than six points as time wound down.
"I felt that the first half was the difference in the game, "said Jim Izard. "We didn't do a good job on the defensive end of the floor. I think that Cindy had an outstanding game for us with 37 points. I also feel that in the second half we had our two freshman in Heather Cassady and Jill Chapman step up."
Kerns credited her teammates for her career-high. "I just credit my teammates today," said Kerns. "They passed me the ball and I guess I felt really focused. I just wanted to win so bad."
Following Kerns in the scoring column was Chapman who had 20 points and
eight rebounds. As a team, IU shot 49 percent from the field while the Wolverines
shot 56 percent. The Hoosiers also lost the battle of the boards 40-30.
