GAME DATA: The Indiana Hoosiers play their final regular season game this afternoon against Iowa. The Hoosiers come into today's game 21-9 overall and 8-7 in league play following its 70-64 overtime victory at Illinois Wednesday. Today's game is also the final home game for Indiana's two seniors ­ William Gladness and Rob Turner.
TELEVISION: The Iowa game will be broadcast by ESPN Regional. Larry Morgan and John Laskowski call the action.
RADIO: Every IU game can be heard on the IU Radio Network. Don Fischer, Bob Hammel, Joe Smith and Norm Ellenberger call the action. The pregame fun begins 40 minutes prior to tipoff.
INDIANA HEAD COACH BOB KNIGHT. . . is college basketball's winningest active head coach with 741 victories (all games at the Division I level). He is just one of 13 NCAA coaches all-time to have recorded 700 or more victories. He is in his 28th season as the Indiana head coach and has a record of 639-229 (.736). Knight is in his 34th season as a collegiate head coach and has an overall record of 741-279 (.726). Knight's record in Big Ten play is 342-145 (.702). He has led the Hoosiers to three NCAA titles (1976, 1981 and 1987) and a conference record 11 Big Ten Championships (1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993). He was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame in May of 1991. Knight is 32-20 vs. Iowa overall and while at Indiana.
THE SERIES: Indiana and Iowa are meeting for the 145th time. The Hoosiers lead the series 84-60. Iowa won this season's first game 67-52 in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes have won the last five meetings and six of the last eight. Iowa has also won last two meetings in Bloomington but the Hoosiers had won the five previous games played in Assembly Hall. Indiana leads the series 48-24 in games played in Bloomington and are 20 5 all-time vs. the Hawks in Assembly Hall.
HOOSIERS IN THE POLLS: The Hoosiers are 17th in this week's ESPN/USA Today and 20th in the Associated Press rankings.
ANOTHER WINNING SEASON: Indiana has assured itself of its 29th consecutive winning season. Every Coach Knight team (28 years) at Indiana has had a winning season. During Knight's tenure in Bloomington, Indiana is the only school in the Big Ten to register an overall winning record each year. Along those same lines with 8 conference victories this year, the Hoosiers have 26 (out of 28) non-losing conference seasons under Knight.
AGAINST THE BEST: Indiana is 4-8 this season against teams that were ranked when the Hoosiers played them. Indiana defeated Utah, Temple, Purdue and Wisconsin while losing to Syracuse, Kentucky, Iowa, Ohio State (twice), Michigan State, Minnesota and Purdue.
CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT SCENARIOS: If Indiana wins today's game the Hoosiers will receive a bye and play on Friday. If the Hoosiers lose, Minnesota and Purdue would also have to lose for the Hoosiers to play on Friday.
LAST GAME: (Indiana 70, Illinois 64, ot): Indiana had not scored a basket in 12 minutes. It had squandered a 15-point lead and was down by a point. Luke Recker decided something had to be done. So he hit two straight 3 pointers, and Michael Lewis followed with another 3 that helped the Hoosiers beat Illinois 70-64 in overtime. Indiana set a Big Ten record by playing its seventh overtime game of the season. Damir Krupalija led Illinois with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Both teams shot poorly from the field. Indiana made just 31.7 percent of its shots while Illinois was at 31.4 percent. The Hoosiers went 12 minutes without scoring a basket in the second half but took a 54-53 lead on three 3-pointers, including two straight by Recker who finished the game with a team-high 22 points. The game was sent into overtime when Krupalija made one of two free throws to tie the game at 54. Indiana took a 58-54 lead in overtime on consecutive baskets by William Gladness, but Illinois tied the game at 58, 60 and 62. Kirk Haston's basket and three Indiana free throws made it 67 62 with 38 seconds left. Sergio McClain scored on a rebound to close Illinois within three, but the Hoosiers made three of their final four free throws to clinch the win. A.J. Guyton added 18 points for Indiana, and Haston grabbed 13 rebounds. After leading by five at halftime, Indiana scored the first 10 points of the second half, including two 3-pointers by Guyton. But Indiana picked up its seventh foul six minutes into the half, and Illinois started making frequent trips to the free-throw line. The Illini made 11 of 14 free throws in a 19-1 run that gave them a 44-41 lead with 6:28 left. The Hoosiers ended a 12-minute field goal drought when Recker hit a 3-pointer that pulled them within one. After Illinois stretched the lead back to five, Recker hit another 3 pointer to make it 53-51 with just under two minutes left. Indiana missed three long shots in a row -- and got the rebound each time -- before Lewis sank a 3 pointer to put the Hoosiers up 54-53 with 40 seconds left. Krupalija's free throw tied the game at 54 with 11 seconds left. In the first half, Indiana used a 15-0 run, featuring back-to-back 3 pointers by Guyton, to take a 29-19 lead with 2:54 left in the half.
THIS SEASON'S PREVIOUS MEETING: Iowa 67, Indiana 52, Iowa City, Dec. 31: Kent McCausland led Iowa with 15 points while Ryan Luehrsmann added 11, and Guy Rucker finished with a game-high 7 rebounds, to help the Hawkeyes break open a tight game in the final 20 minutes to carry Iowa to a 67-52 victory over the Hoosiers. The second half was a big change from the first period for Rucker, who had just one rebound and scored no points before halftime. He finished with 4 points. Rucker and J.R. Koch, who had 4 blocked shots to go with his 4 points, helped the Hawkeyes win the rebounding battle by a 38-31 margin. The Hoosiers shot poorly, hitting 37 percent from the floor on 20-54 shooting. Luke Recker and A.J. Guyton combined to miss 16 of 21 field goals. Rob Turner scored 12 points and Recker 11 for Indiana, which came into the game riding a five-game winning streak. The game was a defensive battle from the beginning, with the Hawkeyes hitting just 38 percent from the floor and Indiana only 34 percent in the first 20 minutes. Iowa hit 5-11 long-range shots, including three by McCausland in the first half, to open a 31-27 halftime lead. Consecutive baskets by Turner and Kirk Haston knotted the game at 31 before Luehrsmann's basket started a 15-5 spurt, capped by Rucker's two free throws, to give the Hawkeyes a 46-36 lead with 12:49 remaining. Cold shooting and turnovers -- Indiana committed 20 for the game -- continued to plague the Hoosiers as the Hawkeyes scored 9 straight points for a 55-36 advantage and the Hoosiers never recovered.
EXTRA TIME SETS BIG TEN RECORD: Indiana's overtime game against Illinois was its seventh of the season (IU defeated Notre Dame, Penn State and Northwestern and lost to Kentucky, Minnesota and vs. Purdue). The seven overtime games is the most IU has played in any one season in school history and sets the Big Ten record held previously by Ohio State in 1982 with six. The NCAA record for overtime games in a season is 8 held by Western Kentucky (1978), Portland (1984) and Valparaiso (1994). With the seven overtimes, including one that went to double overtime, Indiana has, in effect, played an extra game this season.
FRESHMAN OF INFLUENCE: Kirk Haston's recent play has vaulted him into becoming one of the top freshmen in the conference. He is the second leading freshman scorer in the league (conference games only) at 10.1 per game. He is also the top freshman rebounder at 7.3 per game.
LATE SEASON SURGE HELPING: Indiana was just 3-5 at the midway point of the conference season. However the team has rebounded to win five of its last seven games, including four of its last five road games. Indiana's 8-7 conference record is the first time the team has been over .500 this season in league play. IU's overall record of 21-9 marks the first time this year the team has been 12 games above .500.
DEFENSE ROUNDING INTO FORM: The Hoosiers have held three of their last four opponents under 40% from the field and to 36.6% (94-257) overall in these four games. This is the best four-game field goal percentage defensive stretch in conference play in 1999 for the Hoosiers. IU has also held its opponents to just 68.6 ppg over the last six games. The 31.4% defensive night against Illinois was the lowest by an conference opponent this season.
20/20: Indiana has 20 wins which marks the 20th time in Coach Bob Knight's 28 years the team has reached this seasonal milestone. The 20th victory also gave Indiana its 1,450th all-time win. The Hoosiers have won 20 or more games in each of the last three seasons which is the first time this has happened since 1992-94.
RECKER'S STEAL OF A DEAL: Sophomore Luke Recker has 53 steals which ties for the fifth-highest single season total in school history. Mike Woodson is fourth on the list with 53 steals in 1979.
HOOSIERS NEAR TOP OF THE CONFERENCE IN SHOOTING: Indiana is third best shooting team in the Big Ten with a percentage of 45% (conference games only). The Hoosiers are fourth in the league in all games shooting at 46.4%. Indiana also leads the league in assists at 16.4 per game.
CAREER MARKS ALREADY: A number of Indiana players have already set career season-highs. Luke Recker has in points (491), field goals (164 384), 3-point shooting (57-156), free throws (106-143) and steals (53). Rob Turner has in steals (11). Michael Lewis has tied a career best with 15 3-pointers. A.J. Guyton has in rebounds with 114. William Gladness has in assists (45) and also needs just three more steals to pass his last year's totals of 42. Larry Richardson has in points (100), assists (9), blocks (22) and steals (7).
UNBEATEN SEASON STREAK CONTINUES: As there are no unbeaten teams remaining in Division I, Indiana remains the last Division I basketball team to go undefeated in a season as the Hoosiers were 32-0 in 1976. This streaks has now stood for 23 years.
GUYTON AND RECKER ­ IMPORTANT TO THE CAUSE: When A.J. Guyton and Luke Recker combined for 30 or more points for the Hoosiers, it is usually a good sign of success for the team. This has happened 31 times and Indiana is 25-6 in those games. The tandem combined to score 40 at Illinois and the team is now 11-1 when they have scored 40 or more in their career. They have done this eight times this season (41 vs. UAB, 44 at Notre Dame, 46 vs. Northwestern, 45 at Purdue, a career best 53 at Penn State, 45 vs. Purdue, 43 at Northwestern and 40 at Illinois). In games they haven't combined to score 30 or more the Hoosiers are 16-15.
GUYTON AND RECKER FROM 3: A.J. Guyton and Luke Recker have become the most prolific 3-point tandem in single season school history. They have now connected on 125 3's this season breaking the old mark of 122 set by Brian Evans and Neil Reed in 1996. They are also the first tandem to combine for more than 100 3-pointers in consecutive seasons (they had 113 last year). This is the first time in school history two players have accomplished this in consecutive years. Other 100+ 3-point duos include Steve Alford and Keith Smart (119, in 1987) Guyton and Neil Reed (113, in 1997); Jay Edwards and Joe Hillman (106 in 1989) and Calbert Cheaney and Greg Graham (104 in 1993).
THE GUYTON CHRONICLES: A.J. Guyton is on the best scoring run of his career as he has reached double figures in each of the last 12 games. During this span he made the game-tying (in the first overtime) and the game-winning shots (both 3-pointers) at Penn State as he scored a career-high 33 points. He is now Indiana's most prolific 3-point shooter with career totals of 199-479. Guyton made 7 3-pointers against the Nittany Lions which tied a career-high. His 33 points was the third time in his career he has scored 30 or more. He has raised his scoring average from 13.5 to 16.5 during this 12-game span. He has averaged 20.8 points per game over the last 12 games and has shot 45.7% (91-199) from the field and 42.9% (39-91) from 3-point range. He has scored at least 20 points in all of these games except five. His 16 3-point attempts against Penn State tied his single game school record which he set earlier this season at Ohio State. His career point total of 1,481 is 14th on the all time list. He has a ways to go before moving up any further as Archie Dees is in 13th place with 1,546 points.
LEWIS' PASSING FANCY: Michael Lewis has taken a commanding team lead in assists with some recent good play. He has registered 74 assists (just 19 turnovers) in the last 10 games in which he has played (average of almost 33 minutes per game). The junior is also second in the league in assists behind MSU's Mateen Cleaves. He has also averaged 9.1 points per game during this stretch. The junior has 84 assists and just 28 turnovers in conference play (416 minutes). He has 375 career assists which is 7th on Indiana's all-time list (Steve Alford is 6th with 385).
SEASON MARKS MAKING THE GRADE: Several team marks this season have already found themselves among the all-time bests at Indiana. The following are now all in the top 10: 175 3-point field goals (6th), 476 3 point attempts (3rd, school record is 489 set last year)) and 237 steals (3rd, school record is 250 set in 1992).
BALANCED ATTACK BODES WELL: If the Hoosiers spread around the scoring attack they usually win. IU has won all 10 games this season when they have at least four players score in double figures. This happened for the first time in five games as IU accomplished this against Michigan.
LOTS OF GAMES: The 15 games Indiana played this non-conference season is the most in school history before the Big Ten season. The previous high was 14 set in 1988-89 and 1996-97). The most non-conference games Indiana has ever played in a season is 17 which occurred in 1981, 1989 and 1993.
SLOW BIG TEN START USUALLY MEANS STRONG FINISH: During Coach Knight's tenure at Indiana, the Hoosiers have started the league season 1 3 three previous times. IU came back from those starts to post winning seasons each year. The previous three 1-3 starts came in 1978 (finished 12-6), 1979 (10-8) and 1988 (11-7).
ON THE DEFENSE: The Hoosiers are holding their opponents to 67.6 points per game, the lowest opponent average on record since 1991-92 when Indiana allowed 65.8 points a game. The opponents are shooting 41.3% from the field. That is the lowest opponent field goal shooting percentage for the season since 1996-97 when IU opponents shot 42.2%.
KEY NUMBERS: There are a few numbers that apparently are indicators of IU success. According to the numbers, IU needs to grab the halftime lead, as the Hoosiers are 15-3 when leading after the first 20 minutes (plus they're 1-0 when tied at the half). Conversely, the Hoosiers are 5-6 when trailing at half. Additionally, the Hoosiers are 17-3 when scoring more than 70 points, 9-1 when shooting 50% or better, 10-1 when garnering more rebounds and 20-3 when shooting better than their opponents.
DOUBLE YOUR FUN: Kirk Haston took over the team lead in double-doubles with a 13-point, 13-rebound performance at Illinois which was his sixth of the season. William Gladness is next with five. Luke Recker had 10 points and 10 assists vs. San Francisco and had his second of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds at Penn State. Michael Lewis registered one with season-highs of 14 points and 11 assists vs. Northwestern. Lynn Washington has his first career double with 12 points and 10 rebounds at Purdue. Larry Richardson had his first career double with 18 points and 12 rebounds vs. Michigan.
RECORDS THIS SEASON: Good play earlier this season has translated into team school records and other marks being set. Indiana attempted a school record 31 3-pointers at Penn State. Indiana's 12 blocks vs. San Francisco is the most in school history (old mark was 11 set twice before). Indiana's 88.9% 3-point field goal percentage vs. San Francisco tied the school record set once before. Indiana's 20 steals vs. Drake is a school record (old mark was 19 set twice before). Indiana's 29 assists vs. San Francisco was the second-highest single game total in school history (30 vs. Northwestern, 1981). Indiana's 66.7% field goal percentage vs. San Francisco (40-60) tied for the eighth-highest mark in school history (set five previous times).
COMEBACK KIDS: Indiana has had the ability to come back in games this season. Indiana was down by 16 points in the first half at Penn State before coming back to lead at the half and win in double overtime. The Hoosiers notched their fifth come-from-behind victory as they erased a 4 point halftime deficit vs. Ball State. Indiana's last second victory over Temple was the fourth come-from-behind victory of the season. With 8:42 left, IU was down by 9 (52-43) and with 3:54 left, IU was 6 points down (56-50). They trailed by 19 at the half (45-26) to Indiana State and came back and won 76-70. They trailed by 18 (47-29) with 18:50 to play vs. Kansas State and won 71-70 and they trailed by 11 (45-34) with 17:03 to play vs. Notre Dame and won. IU was down by 9 with 68 seconds to play vs. Kentucky and managed to tie the game and send it into overtime.
WINS AND LOSSES: There have been some interesting differences in the 21 wins and 9 losses. IU has shot 47.9% in the wins but just 43.1% in the losses. The Hoosiers have also shot 39.4% in the victories and just 31.4% in the losses from 3-point range. IU's rebounding margin is +1.4 in the wins but in the losses it drops to -5.6. The Hoosiers also average 24.8 free throw attempts in the wins and just 14.6 in the losses. In the seven conference losses, the Hoosiers are allowing 77.1 points per game and are shooting just 58.3% from the foul line. They have also averaged just 66.9 points a game in those losses.
FROM THE FIELD: The Hoosiers field goal percentage has been dropping over the last six games. IU shot 51.9% vs. Wisconsin but then has gone 48.6, 46, 44.6, 42.2 and a season-low 31.7% in each of the last five games. Indiana's longest sub-50% stretch of the season has been six games (Kansas State through Kentucky). Indiana has shot 50% or better 10 times. Indiana comes into today's game shooting 46.4%.
LONG RANGERS: Indiana made 8 of 25 3's at Illinois. That was the third highest amount of attempts this season and just the fourth time all year IU has attempted 20 or more. Guyton and Recker have made 71% of the team's 3's this season (125 of 175). The Hoosiers made 10 (ties for third-highest total in school history) of 31 (school record) at Penn State which were both season-highs. For the season, IU has shot at least 40% 11 times. IU has been under 36% from long range 14 times this season.
CHARITY TOSSES: Indiana has rediscovered its touch from the foul line as they have made 85 of its last 114 (74.6%) over the last four games. IU had made just 18-35 (51.4%) in the two previous games. IU has shot 70% or better only five times in conference play and just 12 times all season (but in three of the last four games). The Hoosiers are shooting just 68.1% from the line. Over the years one of Indiana's keys to success has been making more free throws than its opponents attempt. This year IU has made 445 but the opponents have attempted 518.
BOARD REPORT: Indiana had posted a +29 rebounding margin in games against Penn State and Wisconsin. However, in the last five games that has dropped to -17. The Hoosiers have lost the rebounding wars nine times in conference play. IU's rebounding margin in league play is just 0.7 per game.
ASSIST ANGLE: The Hoosiers lead the league in assists at 16.4 per game. IU has posted at least 20 assists six times this season. Indiana has tallied more assists than their opponents 17 times. The Hoosiers have had only 10 games where they have had more turnovers than assists.
TURNOVER TALE: The Hoosiers are 15-4 when they commit the same or less number of turnovers as their opponent. IU is second in the league in assist/turnover ratio at 1.14. The season average is 14.4 (15.3 last season). The Hoosiers have had less than 15 turnovers in eight league games after doing so in 10 non-conference games.
A STEAL OF A TIME: Indiana has 237 steals (7.9 per game). However, the Hoosiers have not tallied more than 7 in any of the last 12 games. Indiana has had 10 games in which it has registered at least 9 steals and eight games in double figures. The Hoosiers set a school record with 20 vs. Drake.
ON THE DEFENSE: The Hoosiers have held 13 opponents under 40% from the field this year after doing so only 8 times all of last season. However, in 11 league games the opponent has been above 40%. The Hoosiers went through one stretch this season where they allowed no more than 10 field goals in six of seven consecutive halves (second half of Indiana State game through Utah game). Indiana has also allowed single figures in field goals in 13 halves. IU's opponents come into today's game shooting 41.3% from the field.
POINT PRODUCTION: The Hoosiers average 76.4 ppg in the eight conference wins but just 66.9 ppg in the losses. The Hoosiers scored 67 points in the second half vs. USF which was more points than the team has scored in eight games this season. Indiana has managed to score 80 or more points nine times this season. When the Hoosiers do score 80 or more points it usually means a victory. During Coach Knight's 28 years the Hoosiers are 308-20 when scoring 80 or more, 144-4 when scoring 90 or more and 46 0 when scoring 100 or more points.
BLOCK PARTY: Indiana has had 18 blocks in the last three games which is almost half of its total of 44. IU had 12 blocks vs. USF which was only the seventh time in school history an Indiana team has registered double figures in blocks. Kirk Haston leads the team with 26. The Hoosiers are averaging 3.4 blocks per game after averaging 3.9 a year ago.
BIG WINNERS: When the Hoosiers win they usually have a tendency to win big. Last season they won 13 games by 11 or more points and 19 contests by 6 or more points. This season the margin of victory stands at 14.6 points per game. However, Indiana is 7-2 this season in games decided by 5 points or less.
DID YOU KNOW... over the last eight years the Hoosiers have led the Big Ten in scoring? During this span IU has averaged 79.1 points per game in conference play and have finished in the top half of the league in scoring every season.
ONE OF THE TOPS IN THE NATION: During the 1990's Indiana has been one of the top teams in college basketball. The Hoosiers have won 214 games this decade which makes them one of only 13 teams to have won 200 or more games during this span.
