GAME #26 FACTS: Purdue (16-7, 4-5) vs. Indiana (18-7, 5-5). Tuesday (Feb. 9). Assembly Hall (17,357), Bloomington, Ind. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
GAME DATA: The Indiana Hoosiers play the first of two this week tonight against Purdue. Tonight's game is Indiana's first in six days. IU is also toward the beginning of five games (out of the final seven) to finish the regular season. The Hoosiers come into tonight's game 18-7 overall and 5-5 in league play after defeating Wisconsin Wednesday 71-60.
TELEVISION: The Purdue game will be broadcast by ESPN. Dave Barnett and Dick Vitale call the action.
RADIO: Every IU game can be heard on the IU Radio Network. Don Fischer, Bob Hammel, Joe Smith and Norm Ellenberger call the action. The pregame fun begins 40 minutes prior to tipoff.
INDIANA HEAD COACH BOB KNIGHT. . . is college basketball's winningest active head coach with 738 victories (all games at the Division I level). He is just one of 12 NCAA coaches all-time to have recorded 700 or more victories. He is in his 28th season as the Indiana head coach and has a record of 636-227 (.737). Knight is in his 34th season as a collegiate head coach and has an overall record of 738-277 (.727). Knight's record in Big Ten play is 339-143 (.703). He has led the Hoosiers to three NCAA titles (1976, 1981 and 1987) and a conference record 11 Big Ten Championships (1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993). He was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame in May of 1991. Knight is 30-27 vs. Purdue overall and 29-26 while at Indiana.
THE SERIES: Indiana and Purdue are meeting for the 175th time. The Boilermakers lead the series 102-72 after Indiana won this season's earlier matchup 87-76 in West Lafayette. The teams have now split the last four meetings after Purdue won two of three last season. Indiana won last year's game in Assembly Hall 94-88. Indiana also holds 50-35 series edge in games played in Bloomington. The Hoosiers hold a 21-6 edge in games played in Assembly Hall. Purdue is the only Big Ten team to lead an all-time series against Indiana.
HOOSIERS IN THE POLLS: The Hoosiers are 15th in this week's ESPN/USA Today and 17th in the Associated Press rankings.
ANOTHER WINNING SEASON: Indiana has assured itself of its 29th consecutive winning season. Every Coach Knight team (28 years) at Indiana has had a winning season. During Knight's tenure in Bloomington, Indiana is the only school in the Big Ten to register an overall winning record each year. Along those same lines with 9 conference victories a year ago, the Hoosiers have 25 (out of 27) non-losing conference seasons under Knight.
RANDLE EL BREAKS HAND, AGAIN: Antwaan Randle El is back on the injured list after breaking the fourth metacarpal bone in his right hand in practice last Friday. He is expected to miss four weeks. Earlier this season he broke the second metacarpal bone in the same hand and missed four weeks.
THIS SEASON'S PREVIOUS MEETING: Indiana 87, Purdue 76, West Lafayette, Jan. 16: Luke Recker scored 24 points as Indiana picked up a much-needed road win in Big Ten Conference play with an 87 76 victory over Purdue. A.J. Guyton added 21 points for the Hoosiers, who won on the road for the first time in four conference games. The Hoosiers won for the first time since 1993 in West Lafayette, snapping a five-game losing streak at Mackey Arena. Jaraan Cornell scored 18 points and Greg McQuay added 17 for Purdue, which had a 16 game winning streak at Mackey Arena come to an end. Purdue took its only lead on a basket by Brian Cardinal 15 seconds into the game, but Recker had seven points in a 21-6 tear. The Hoosiers opened a 21-8 lead on a three-pointer by Guyton with 13:24 to go in the first half. Guyton had a pair of jumpers to keep the lead at 26-13, but Purdue put together at 18-5 burst and pulled within 36-31 on a layup by Cameron Stephens with 2:03 to go in the first half. Indiana led 58-47 with 10:49 left on a jumper by Michael Lewis, but McQuay had 7 points in a 15 7 spurt. The Boilermakers closed within 65 62 on his layup with 4:44 remaining. Recker countered by making 3-4 free throws in the next 44 seconds before Guyton hit a 3 pointer to give Indiana a 71-62 advantage with 3:06 to play. Purdue got no closer than 7 points thereafter. Lewis had another solid outing, totaling 11 points and 9 assists. William Gladness and Lynn Washington each had double-doubles for the Hoosiers, with Gladness totaling 13 points and 10 rebounds. Indiana shot 16-26 (62%) from the field in the second half and 53% (32-60) overall. Rob Turner was the only reserve to see significant action and hit all three shots he took in 16 minutes, while Kirk Haston played four minutes and Luke Jimenez one. The Boilermakers, who shot only 40 percent (29-72), including a woeful 3-18 from three-point range.
LAST GAME: (Indiana 71, Wisconsin 60): Indiana held Wisconsin scoreless in the final three minutes for a 71-60 victory, ending the Badgers' longest Big Ten winning streak in 58 years. Wisconsin, which came in as the conference leader in scoring defense, had won seven straight games and had allowed only one other opponent more than 70 points all season. But after the Badgers cut a 13-point lead to four, defense kicked in for the Hoosiers. Michael Lewis hit one free throw for Indiana's first point in more than three minutes, then added two more as Sean Mason, Wisconsin's leading scorer with 19 points, fouled out with 1:38 left. Kirk Haston and Lewis each added free throws and Lewis scored the game's final basket on a layup. Knight went with a smaller lineup, including guard Rob Turner, who had a season-high 22 points, 14 in the first half. William Gladness, who entered the game after the first minute and played the rest of the way, had 8 points and 14 rebounds, 12 of them in the first half when the Hoosiers took control. Wisconsin, which had outscored its opponents by 12 points a game during its winning streak, managed consecutive baskets only once in the opening half. After six early ties, a 3-pointer by Luke Recker started a 9 0 Indiana run as the Badgers went five straight possessions over the next six minutes without a score. Two baskets by A.J. Guyton and one by Turner off an assist by Gladness gave Indiana a 27 18 lead, and the Hoosiers stretched it to 37-24 on a 3-pointer by Luke Jimenez before Andy Kowske and Jon Bryant hit consecutive baskets with just over two minutes left in the half. Dane Fife's driving layup gave Indiana a 39-28 lead at the break. Indiana matched its biggest lead with a 3-pointer by Guyton for a 64-51 lead before Wisconsin's final rally. It was the Badgers' first loss in six games against other Top 25 teams, and it extended their streak of losses at Indiana to 20 since a two-point victory in 1977.
AGAINST THE BEST: Indiana is 4-6 this season against teams that were ranked when the Hoosiers played them. Indiana defeated Utah, Temple, Purdue and Wisconsin while losing to Syracuse, Kentucky, Iowa, Ohio State, Michigan State and Minnesota.
ILLINOIS GAME TIME AND DATE SET: The Big Ten Conference has announced the Indiana-Illinois game schedule for late February will be played on Wednesday, Feb. 24 at 8 p.m. ET (7 p.m. CT) in Champaign. The game will be televised by ESPN Regional which includes WTTV Ch.4 in Indianapolis. The only game left to be decided is the final regular season game against Iowa in Bloomington on either Feb. 27 or 28.
UNBEATEN SEASON STREAK CONTINUES: As there are no unbeaten teams remaining in Division I, Indiana remains the last Division I basketball team to go undefeated in a season as the Hoosiers were 32-0 in 1976. This streaks has now stood for 23 years.
DEFENSE RETURNS: Indiana had allowed more than 70 points only twice in the first 17 games. After that, the opponents averaged 81 points per game (seven contests) and scored at least 73 points in each of those games. That streak came to an end against Wisconsin as IU allowed just 60 points which is the second-lowest total of the league season.
THE GUYTON FILES: A.J. Guyton has been IU's catalyst over the last few weeks. He made the game-tying (in the first overtime) and the game winning shots (both 3-pointers) at Penn State as he scored a career-high 33 points. He is now Indiana's most prolific 3-point shooter with career totals of 189-457. Guyton made 7 3-pointers against the Nittany Lions which tied a career-high. His 33 points was the third time in his career he has scored 30 or more. Besides all of this, he is also on his best scoring stretch of the season. He has registered double figures in a season-high seven consecutive games and has raised his scoring average from 13.5 to 16.1 during this span. He has averaged 22.8 points per game over the last seven games and has shot 46.4% from the field and 44% from 3-point range. He has scored at least 20 points in all of these games except two. His 16 3-point attempts against Penn State tied his single game school record which he set earlier this season at Ohio State. His career point total of 1,390 is 17th on the all-time list. He needs 12 points to move into 16th (Jimmy Rayl, 1,401) and 38 points to move into 15th (Ray Tolbert, 1,427).
LEWIS' PASSING FANCY: Michael Lewis has taken a commanding team lead in assists with some recent good play. He has registered 49 assists (just 12 turnovers) in the last six games in an average of just over 36 minutes per game. He has also averaged 10.3 points per game during this stretch. The junior has 59 assists and just 21 turnovers in conference play (300 minutes). He has 350 career assists which is 9th on Indiana's all-time list (needs 7 to move up to 7th).
SENIORS STEP UP: Indiana's lone seniors ­ William Gladness and Rob Turner ­ played well against Wisconsin. Turner started the game and scored a season-high 22 points on 8-11 shooting. He also made 2-3 3 pointers and 4-4 free throws. Gladness came off the bench to score 8 points and grabbed a career-high tying 14 rebounds in 39 minutes.
GUYTON AND RECKER ­ IMPORTANT TO THE CAUSE: When A.J. Guyton and Luke Recker combined for 30 or more points for the Hoosiers, it is usually a good sign of success for the team. This has happened 27 times in their careers and Indiana is 22-5 in those games. The Hoosiers are also 9-0 when they combine to score 40 or more points which they have done five times this season (41 vs. UAB, 44 at Notre Dame, 46 vs. Northwestern, 45 at Purdue and a career best 53 at Penn State). In games they haven't combined to score 30 or more the Hoosiers are 16-14.
HITTING THE BOARDS: The Hoosiers have been taking care of business on the boards in the last few games. IU had a +17 margin at Penn State (52 35) and then were +12 vs. Wisconsin (37-25). Those 25 rebounds were an opponents season-low. The 52 rebounds marked the first time since 1994-95 that IU had managed to grab 50 or more rebounds in a game (52 vs. Arkansas-Little Rock).
SEASON MARKS MAKING THE GRADE: Several team marks this season have already found themselves among the all-time bests at Indiana. The following are now all in the top 10: 148 3-point field goals (7th), 401 3 point attempts (tied for 5th) and 211 steals (8th).
BALANCED ATTACK BODES WELL: If the Hoosiers spread around the scoring attack they usually win. IU has won all nine games this season when they have at least four players score in double figures.
LOTS OF GAMES: The 15 games Indiana played this non-conference season is the most in school history before the Big Ten season. The previous high was 14 set in 1988-89 and 1996-97). The most non-conference games Indiana has ever played in a season is 17 which occurred in 1981, 1989 and 1993.
SLOW BIG TEN START USUALLY MEANS STRONG FINISH: During Coach Knight's tenure at Indiana, the Hoosiers have started the league season 1 3 three previous times. IU came back from those starts to post winning seasons each year. The previous three 1-3 starts came in 1978 (finished 12-6), 1979 (10-8) and 1988 (11-7).
ON THE DEFENSE: The Hoosiers are holding their opponents to 67.1 points per game, the lowest opponent average on record since 1991-92 when Indiana allowed 65.8 points a game. The opponents are shooting 41.4% from the field. That is the lowest opponent field goal shooting percentage for the season since 1994-95 when IU opponents shot 41%.
KEY NUMBERS: There are a few numbers that apparently are indicators of IU success. According to the numbers, IU needs to grab the halftime lead, as the Hoosiers are 13-2 when leading after the first 20 minutes (plus they're 1-0 when tied at the half). Conversely, the Hoosiers are 4-5 when trailing at half. Additionally, the Hoosiers are 15-2 when scoring more than 70 points, 9-1 when shooting 50% or better, 10-1 when garnering more rebounds and 17-2 when shooting better than their opponents.
DOUBLE YOUR FUN: William Gladness leads the Hoosiers this season with five double-doubles. Kirk Haston is next with four double-figure point rebound games. Luke Recker had 10 points and 10 assists vs. San Francisco and had his second of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds at Penn State. Michael Lewis registered one with season-highs of 14 points and 11 assists vs. Northwestern. Lynn Washington has his first career double with 12 points and 10 rebounds at Purdue.
RECORDS THIS SEASON: Good play earlier this season has translated into team school records and other marks being set. Indiana attempted a school record 31 3-pointers at Penn State. Indiana's 12 blocks vs. San Francisco is the most in school history (old mark was 11 set twice before). Indiana's 88.9% 3-point field goal percentage vs. San Francisco tied the school record set once before. Indiana's 20 steals vs. Drake is a school record (old mark was 19 set twice before). Indiana's 29 assists vs. San Francisco was the second-highest single game total in school history (30 vs. Northwestern, 1981). Indiana's 66.7% field goal percentage vs. San Francisco (40-60) tied for the eighth-highest mark in school history (set five previous times).
COMEBACK KIDS: Indiana has had the ability to come back in games this season. Indiana was down by 16 points in the first half at Penn State before coming back to lead at the half and win in double overtime. The Hoosiers notched their fifth come-from-behind victory as they erased a 4 point halftime deficit vs. Ball State. Indiana's last second victory over Temple was the fourth come-from-behind victory of the season. With 8:42 left, IU was down by 9 (52-43) and with 3:54 left, IU was 6 points down (56-50). They trailed by 19 at the half (45-26) to Indiana State and came back and won 76-70. They trailed by 18 (47-29) with 18:50 to play vs. Kansas State and won 71-70 and they trailed by 11 (45-34) with 17:03 to play vs. Notre Dame and won. IU was down by 9 with 68 seconds to play vs. Kentucky and managed to tie the game and send it into overtime.
WINS AND LOSSES: There have been some interesting differences in the 18 wins and 7 losses. IU has shot 49.2% in the wins but just 42% in the losses. The Hoosiers have also shot 39.4% in the victories and just 31.5% in the losses from 3-point range. IU's rebounding margin is +2.2 in the wins but in the losses it drops to -6.1. The Hoosiers also average 23.6 free throw attempts in the wins and just 14.2 in the losses.
FROM THE FIELD: The Hoosiers have shot better than 50% in four of the last six games and during this span are at 51.2% (187-365). IU shot 45.5% at Penn State and that was the first time this season they shot worse than the opponent and won. Indiana has shot 50% or better 10 times. Indiana comes into tonight's game shooting 47.2%. Indiana is 17-2 when outshooting its opponents. Indiana attempted 88 field goals against Penn State which was the highest for an Indiana team in 23 years. The last time IU attempted more than 80 was March 6, 1976 when it had 85 against Ohio State.
LONG RANGERS: Indiana has made 33-82 3's (40.2%) over the last five games which is well above its season's percentage of 36.9. The Hoosiers made 10 (ties for third-highest total in school history) of 31 (school record) at Penn State which were both season-highs. For the season, IU has shot at least 40% nine times. IU has been under 36% from long range 11 times this season.
CHARITY TOSSES: Indiana's foul shooting troubles returned against Wisconsin as they made just 12-21 (57.1%). Indiana has shot 70% or better only twice in the conference season and just nine times all season. The Hoosiers are shooting just 67.3% from the line. Over the years one of Indiana's keys to success has been making more free throws than its opponents attempt. This year IU has made 354 but the opponents have attempted 426.
BOARD REPORT: Indiana has outrebounded the last two opponents by an average of 14.5 per game. IU held Wisconsin to an opponents season-low 25 rebounds. The Hoosiers have lost the rebounding wars five times in conference play. Indiana has also been getting to the offensive glass as it has averaged 14.5 per contest in the last two games. IU now has a rebounding margin of +0.5 in league play (first time that has been positive this league season).
ASSIST ANGLE: The Hoosiers have averaged 17.4 apg over the last five games which includes conference season-highs of 20 against Purdue and Minnesota. IU has posted at least 20 assists five times this season. The Hoosiers lead the league in assists at 16.6 per game. Indiana had an assist on 64.6% of their field goals last season but are at 60.1% this year. Indiana has tallied more assists than their opponents 14 times this season. The Hoosiers have had only eight games this season where they have had more turnovers than assists.
TURNOVER TALE: The Hoosiers are 13-3 when they commit the same or less number of turnovers as their opponent. IU leads in the league in assist/turnover ratio at 1.16. The Hoosiers tied a season best vs. Wisconsin as they had only 10 miscues. The season average is 14.3 (15.3 last season). The Hoosiers have had less than 15 turnovers five league games after doing so in 10 non-conference games.
A STEAL OF A TIME: Indiana has 211 steals (8.4 per game). In the last seven games, IU has averaged just 4.1 a game. IU is third in the league in steals. Indiana has had 10 games in which it has registered at least 9 steals and eight games in double figures. The Hoosiers set a school record with 20 vs. Drake.
ON THE DEFENSE: The Hoosiers have held 10 opponents under 40% from the field this year after doing so only 8 times all of last season. However, nine of the league opponents have been above 40%. The Hoosiers went through one stretch this season where they allowed no more than 10 field goals in six of seven consecutive halves (second half of Indiana State game through Utah game). Indiana has also allowed single figures in field goals in 11 halves. IU's opponents come into tonight's game shooting 41.4% from the field.
POINT PRODUCTION: The Hoosiers average 79.8 ppg in the five conference wins but just 64 ppg in the losses. The Hoosiers scored 67 points in the second half vs. USF which was more points than the team has scored in eight games this season. Indiana has managed to score 80 or more points eight times this season. When the Hoosiers do score 80 or more points it usually means a victory. During Coach Knight's 28 years the Hoosiers are 308-19 when scoring 80 or more, 144-4 when scoring 90 or more and 46 0 when scoring 100 or more points.
BLOCK PARTY: Indiana has just 23 blocks in league play. IU had 12 blocks vs. USF which was only the seventh time in school history an Indiana team has registered double figures in blocks. Kirk Haston leads the team with 20. The Hoosiers are averaging 3.2 blocks per game after averaging 3.9 a year ago.
BIG WINNERS: When the Hoosiers win they usually have a tendency to win big. Last season they won 13 games by 11 or more points and 19 contests by 6 or more points. This season the margin of victory stands at 16.2 points per game. However, Indiana has won all six games this season decided by 5 points or less.
DID YOU KNOW... over the last eight years the Hoosiers have led the Big Ten in scoring? During this span IU has averaged 79.1 points per game in conference play and have finished in the top half of the league in scoring every season.
ONE OF THE TOPS IN THE NATION: During the 1990's Indiana has been one of the top teams in college basketball. The Hoosiers have won 214 games this decade which makes them one of only 13 teams to have won 200 or more games during this span.
