19th RANKED HOOSIERS WIN THREE OF FOUR AT DAVIS SHOOTOUTDavis, Calif. - The IU Water Polo team improved to 7-8 as it split two matches Saturday and won both Sunday at the Davis Shootout.
The Hoosiers opened the tournament against Santa Clara Saturday. IU sophomore Kristin Carpenter led the way with four goals. Freshman Mary Lesniak and sophomore Sheri Fagley scored two goals each.
IU then dropped an overtime thriller to Loyola Marymount. Trailing 3-1, the Hoosiers rallied to tie the game in the fourth quarter, but Loyola Marymount scored both goals in the overtime period to win 5-3. Sophomore Deb Simone scored twice and Carpenter scored one goal.
Indiana started day two with a hard fought 4-3 win over Redlands. IU held a 4-2 lead entering the fourth quarter and held off a late charge to preserve the victory. Simone, Carpenter, senior Kelly Ross, and sophomore Kelly McKay each scored one goal for the Hoosiers.
The Hoosiers rallied in their final game of the weekend to gain an 8-7 overtime victory over Cal State-Bakersfield. IU trailed 7-5 entering the fourth quarter before rallying to send the game to overtime tied at seven. Carpenter led IU with three goals, Simone and sophomore Molly Fonner scored two each, and Lesniak added one goal.
