19th RANKED HOOSIERS DEFEAT CSUB ON WEST COAST SWINGBakersfield, Calif. - Indiana's 19th ranked women's water polo team won its third-straight match Wednesday, defeating Cal State Bakersfield 7-5 at the John S. Hilman Aquatics Center on the CSUB campus. With the victory, the Hoosiers improve to 8-8 on the season.
Indiana, which defeated CSUB 8-7 in overtime at the UC Davis tournament last weekend, used a quick offensive thrust early in the second half to take command before holding off a late Roadrunner rally.
The teams traded goals in the first quarter with the period ending in a 2-2 tie. Sophomore driver Kristin Carpenter put the Hoosiers ahead to stay just 22 seconds into the second quarter, skipping in a near-post shot.
Indiana eventually built its lead to as many as four goals at 7-3 before CSUB made a late charge of its own with two fourth quarter goals.
Sherri Fagley led Indiana with three goals while Mary Lesniak netted two and Deb Simone and Kristin Carpenter each added one apiece.
Indiana closes out its West Coast swing with matches at San Jose State Friday, March 19 and against No. 12 Pacific Saturday, March. 20.
