Indiana Football Begins Spring Practice Today
Bloomington, Ind. -- The Indiana University football team held the first of its 15 spring practices this morning at the football practice fields adjacent to Memorial Stadium. Indiana will practice at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday. The Red-White Spring Game is scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, April 17. The game will be played at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
The biggest news of Saturday's session was that freshmen Jamarkus Gorman and Herman Fowler have been ruled eligible by the NCAA to participate in spring drills.
Several position changes have also been made. Sophomore Levron Williams has moved from wide receiver to running back. Redshirt freshman Ron Bethel is now playing cornerback after redshirting as a wide receiver in 1998. Sophomores Justin Smith, who played safety last season, and Devin Schaffer, a former Whip, have moved to inside linebacker. Sophomore Brandon Rodgers moved from free safety to strong safety.
Almost every player practiced with the exception of Damian Gregory (knee surgery in February) and Jason Czap (wrist). Redshirt freshmen linebackers Stephen Anthony and Jason McWilliams saw controlled action because both underwent knee surgery last fall. Redshirt freshman Gibran Hamdan practiced for the first hour with his baseball uniform underneath his sweats and then headed for a baseball game vs. Western Michigan which will be played at Sembower Field this afternoon.
Cameron announced 11 players who were the top performers in winter conditioning for their cumulative performance throughout winter drills. They are listed in order of performance: Adewale Ogunleye, Derek Barnett, Derin Graham, Tyrone Browning, Brad Gecina, Vince Lidy, Pat Shaw, Drew Hagan, Terry Kramer, Gordon Bramel, and Antwaan Randle.
"You've got to take two things into consideration in the fact that
Antwaan was 11th," said head coach Cam Cameron. "He was practicing
basketball at the same time. He was doing the winter workouts in the morning
and going to basketball, and there was one station he couldn't do because
he had a broken hand so he couldn't get any points for that one. He still
finished 11th."
