Second Practice Highlighted with Visit by Curtis Randle El
Bloomington, Ind. -- The Indiana University football squad held its second practice of the spring this afternoon in a marathon session that started at 2:00 p.m. and ended at approximately 5:45 p.m. Senior defensive back Curtis Randle El was released from the hospital on Saturday evening and made a brief appearance at today's practice.
"The hospital had said that Curtis might get out this weekend," said head coach Cam Cameron. "I don't think anyone expected him to get out last night. So that was encouraging. I think our team saw him when he walked in the gate. I could hear some mumbling going on and I looked over and that's when I stopped practice. Our guys have some really special feelings toward Curtis."
Sunday's practice was highlighted by three impressive throws, one each by three different Hoosier quarterbacks. Sophomore Antwaan Randle El completed a 40-yard pass to junior wide receiver Tyrone Browning in "Red Ball" (2:00 drill). Redshirt freshman Gibran Hamdan hit sophomore Derin Graham with a 60-yard bomb during 11-11 drills and redshirt freshman Tommy Jones made several impressive throws, one a touch pass on a rollout to redshirt freshman tight end Bobby Brandt. Hamdan missed the first two hours of practice because he is a member of the IU baseball team who was playing Western Michigan this afternoon. The Hoosiers won 13-12 in 12 innings to improve their record to 19-3.
"Wally (Ogunleye) looks good, doesn't he," Cameron asked the media. "Some of those defensive linemen have really gotten bigger like (Sean) Nelson and (Derek) Barnett. Chad Miller's gotten bigger and (Craig) Robeen has trimmed down a little bit. Our guys look pretty lean. Hogan looks good. His body type is more set for the fullback position. He's not quite fast enough to play tailback. This allows him to keep his natural weight. It's also nice to see Frankie Franklin look so good."
The Hoosiers will resume practice again on Wednesday, March 31 at 3:00 p.m. It will be the first practice in full pads and will include a scrimmage. Cameron said Friday's practice will also consist of a scrimmage that should last for the majority of the practice.
The Red-White Spring Game is scheduled for Saturday, April 17 at 5:00 p.m. The game will be played at Bill Armstrong Stadium. Also, the IU football staff will host its Second Annual IU Football Women's Clinic on Thursday, April 8. The clinic will be held at the Memorial Stadium football complex and will begin at 6:30 p.m.
Following today's practice, quarterback Antwaan Randle El addresed approximately 200 of Bloomington's youth at a basketball banquet at Bloomington's Bannaker Center.
