NICK GARCIA MAKES U.S. UNDER-20 TEAM

Bloomington, Ind.-- United States national coach Sigi Schmid announced that Indiana sophomore sweeper Nick Garcia qualified for the U.S. Under-20 National Team. The 18-player squad departs for the 1999 FIFA World Youth Championship in Nigeria on April 1.
Garcia was the lone Big Ten player on the squad which consists of five professional players and 13 top college stars.
The U.S. Team were placed in Group E and their first round schedule is
as follows:
April 5 USA vs. England Sani Abachi Stadium in Kano, Nigeria
April 8 USA vs. Japan Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium in Bauchi, Nigeria
April 11 USA vs. Cameroon Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium in Bauchi,
Nigeria
The USA's best finish came in 1989 in Saudi Arabia where they advanced to the semifinals. They were defeated by Nigeria in overtime. Most recently, the USA took 15th overall at the 1997 tournament in Malaysia. During Malaysia '97, the USA advanced to the round of 16 where they were defeated by tournament runner-up Uruguay.
