HOOSIERS END SEASON 13-18 OVERALL, 2-14 BIG TEN
Indiana loses 88-69 to Michigan State in first round of Big Ten Tourney
INDIANA'S RECORD - Indiana closed out the 1998-99 season with a school-record 10-straight losses to finish 13-18 overall and 2-14 in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers completed league play tied for 10th with Minnesota in the final conference standings. The Hoosiers did not advance in Big Ten Tournament play, losing to the no. 7 seed Michigan State 88-69 in the first round.
TALE OF TWO SEASONS - After jumping out to an impressive 11-3 nonconference record with victories over Cincinnati, Southwest Missouri State, Western Kentucky and Vanderbilt, the Hoosiers lost 15 of their last 17 games.
LEADERBOARD - Three Hoosiers ended the season with double-figure scoring averages led by 6-2 senior Cindy Kerns' 15.2 points per game. She was followed by freshman Jill Chapman (14.2 ppg) and junior Kay Morgan (11.4 ppg). Chapman led the team in rebounding, averaging 7.6 boards per game while also shooting a team-best 55 percent from the field. As a squad, IU averaged 71.7 points and 36.4 rebounds per game while shooting 44 percent from the field. Indiana's opponents averaged 74.1 points and 40.6 rebounds per game while shooting 45 percent from the field.
HEAD COACH JIM IZARD - Head Coach Jim Izard completed his 11th season at the helm of the Indiana program where he owns a 178-141 (.560) overall record and a 79-112 (.416) mark in the Big Ten Conference. As Indiana's all-time winningest coach, Izard has guided his teams to nine winning seasons, two NCAA post-season tournament appearances, a runner-up finish in the NWIT post-season tournament and a trip to the Final Four of both the pre and post-1998 WNIT tournaments. His 17-year career record stands at 341-190 (.643).
ALL BIG TEN - Senior Cindy Kerns and freshman Jill Chapman were named to the Media's 1998-99 All-Big Ten Honorable Mention team. Kerns also earned a spot on the Coaches' honorable mention All-Big Ten team while Chapman was selected to the Coaches All-Freshman Team.
ON THE NATIONAL FRONT - Indiana finished the season ranked 21st in the nation for 3-point shooting, averaging 6.1 per game. Leading the way for the Hoosiers was junior Kay Morgan who netted a school single-season record 70 shots from downtown.
TWO FOR 1,000 - Heading into their final weekend of league play, seniors Dani Thrush and Kristi Green were 11 and 10 points, respectively, short of 1,000 career points. Thrush reached the milestone against Northwestern on Feb. 19, while Green, who led the nation in free throw percentage a year ago, fittingly scored her 1,000 career point on two free throws at Michigan Feb. 21. Thrush ended her career with 1,017 career points to rank13th all-time on the IU scoring charts while Green finished with 1,006 points to rank 14th.
HER BEST FOR LAST - Playing in her final regular season Big Ten game at Michigan Feb. 21, senior Cindy Kerns exploded for a career-high 37 points, connecting on 15 of 26 shots from the field and 4 of 7 from behind the 3-point arc. In her scoring frenzy, the 6-2 forward became the first Hoosier in over a decade to score 32 or more points in a game. Her 37 points left her just three shy of the school record set by Karna Abram (40 points) in 1987.
BIG TEN FROSH PLAY - Indiana's 6-5 center Jill Chapman was named to the Coaches' All-Big Ten Freshman Team after completing a successful rookie campaign in the Big Ten. Chapman, who averaged 14.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game in league play, led Indiana from the field shooting 52 percent. She also scored in double-figures in all but four games. Against Michigan State in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament, Chapman netted a career-high 31 points, bettering her previous best of 24 points scored Jan. 31 against Ohio State.
DOUBLE-TROUBLE - Seniors Cindy Kerns and Dani Thrush, along with freshman Jill Chapman combined for 23 double-doubles during the season. Kerns' 10 double-dips ranked third in the Big Ten while Chapman's eight double-doubles was the most of any freshman in the league.
BEHIND THE ARC - As a team, the Hoosiers led the Big Ten in 3-point shooting with 189 baskets from behind the arc. The Hoosiers averaged 6.1 3-pointers per game and set a new school single-game record twice with 12 3-pointers against Purdue on Jan. 29, and 12 against East Tennessee State Nov. 22.
PACK THE HOUSE - Indiana set a new single game school attendance record Jan. 29, when 5,503 fans passed through the turnstiles to watch the Hoosiers take on the second-ranked Boilermakers. The new record bettered the old mark of 5,003 set last year when Indiana hosted Purdue in Assembly Hall.
IT'S A SWEEP - Center Jill Chapman was four-for-four on making all-tournament teams as a rookie. Playing her first collegiate season, Chapman earned all-tournament honors in every tournament the Hoosiers played in, including the Preseason WNIT, the Hatter Classic, the Full-O-Pep Classic and the Hampton Inn and Fazoli's Classic.
KUDOS FOR KERNS - Forward Cindy Kerns was named Big Ten Co-Player of the week Dec. 21 for her performance in three-straight victories over Cleveland State, Vanderbilt and Tennessee Tech. For the weekend, the senior co-captain averaged 20.3 points and eight rebounds per game with 20 points and 14 boards coming in the win over Vanderbilt. In addition, she hit 64 percent of her field goals and 82 percent of her free throws over the weekend.
INDIANA INKS SIX - Women's Basketball Journal, a monthly publication,
has rated Indiana's incoming freshman class as the fourth best in the nation.
Only Tennessee, Ohio State and Louisiana State ranked higher among schools
with at least three recruits. The six national letter of intent signees
include two players from the Hoosier state, two from Ohio and one each from
Illinois and Yugoslavia. The signees include: Jill Hartman (5-11, forward,
Evansville Memorial/ Evansville); Rainey Alting (5-5, guard, Vincennes University/Lafayette);
Jelena Lazic (6-6, center, Vincennes University/Belgrade, Yugoslavia); Allison
Skapin (6-0, forward, Beavercreek/ Beavercreek, Ohio); Erika Christenson
(6-4, center, Fairborn/Fairborn, Ohio) and Jamie Gathing (6-0, forward,
Kankakee/ Kankakee, Ill.)
