GAME DATA: The Indiana Hoosiers open play in the 1999 NCAA Tournament as the No. 6 seed in the South Region. IU plays the 11th seed George Washington in Thursday's first round matchup. The winner of the game plays the winner of the St. John's-Samford game Saturday March 13.
TELEVISION: All games in the NCAA Tournament are televised on CBS. Check local listings for the time and station in specific areas.
RADIO: Every IU game can be heard on the IU Radio Network. The flagship station is WBWB in Bloomington which provides a statewide network. Don Fischer, Bob Hammel, Joe Smith and Norm Ellenberger call the action. The pregame show begins 40 minutes prior to tipoff.
INDIANA HEAD COACH BOB KNIGHT is college basketball's winningest active head coach with 742 victories (all games at the Division I level). He is just one of 13 NCAA coaches all-time to have recorded 700 or more victories. He is in his 28th season as the Indiana head coach and has a record of 640-230 (.736). Knight is in his 34th season as a collegiate head coach and has an overall record of 742-280 (.726). Knight's record in Big Ten play is 343-145 (.703). He has led the Hoosiers to three NCAA titles (1976, 1981 and 1987) and a conference record 11 Big Ten Championships (1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993). He was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame in May of 1991. Knight is 2-0 vs. George Washington overall. Both of those games were played while he was the head coach at Army.
THE SERIES: Indiana and George Washington are meeting for the third time. The Hoosiers lead the series 2-0. The last time the schools played was in 1941-42 when the Hoosiers won 52-43 in Washington D.C. The other games took place in Bloomington in 1934-35 (a 45-41 IU victory).
INDIANA AND THE NCAA TOURNAMENT: The Hoosiers are making their 28th appearance in the NCAA Tournament overall, their 14th consecutive trip (third longest national current streak) and the 19th in the last 20 years. This is the 23rd appearance in Bob Knight's 28 years at Indiana. Indiana ranks sixth in all-time NCAA Tournament winning percentage at .699 (51 22). The Hoosiers are third in titles (5), tied for fourth in tournament appearances (28), sixth in tournament victories (51) and seventh in Final Four appearances (7).
INDIANA'S BIG TEN HISTORY: The Indiana Hoosiers just completed their 92nd season of Big Ten basketball. Indiana began playing Big Ten basketball in 1905 (IU missed the 1907 and 1908 seasons). The Hoosiers are the winningest team in conference history with a 59.5% winning percentage (751-511). Indiana is second in league history with 19 titles.
HOW RANK(ED): Indiana is one of only two Big Ten teams (Michigan State was the other) to appear in both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Top 25 every week this season.
INDIANA'S RECENT SEEDS: Here's a look at Indiana's over the last eight seasons: 1999 (6th, South), 1998 (7th, East), 1997 (8th, East), 1996 (6th, Southeast), 1995 (9th, West), 1994 (5th, East), 1993 (1st, Midwest) and 1992 (2nd, West).
INDIANA VS. THE ATLANTIC 10: Indiana is 20-4 all-time vs. teams in the Atlantic 10. Most of the games have come against Xavier whom the Hoosiers are 7-0 against. The last meeting between Indiana and an Atlantic 10 school was earlier this year when Indiana defeated Temple 63-62 on Dec. 5.
INDIANA AGAINST THE FIELD: The Hoosiers played 14 games against teams that made the NCAA Tournament field. The Hoosiers defeated UAB, Utah, Temple, Purdue, Wisconsin and Iowa. IU lost to Syracuse, Kentucky, Iowa, Ohio State (twice), Michigan State, Minnesota and Purdue.
HOOSIERS FEEL AT HOME IN NBA ARENAS: During the 1990's the Hoosiers have felt right at home playing in buildings NBA teams call home. IU has played 35 such games during this span and is 29-6 in those contests. This season IU is 2-1 winning both games at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis and losing at the United Center in Chicago. The Hoosiers are 0-1 all-time in the Orlando Arena.
HAVE WE DONE THIS BEFORE?: Three seasons ago Indiana played in Orlando in the NCAA Tournament. That season the Hoosiers were also a No. 6 seed and played a team from the east coast ­ Boston College. The Hoosiers lost that game 64-51.
1998-99 HONORS AND AWARDS: Several Hoosiers have already earned postseason honors. A.J. Guyton was a second team All-Big Ten pick. Luke Recker was a third team all-conference selection. Guyton was a NABC District 10 first team performer while Recker was named to the second team. Recker was also on the GTE District V All-Academic team.
ANOTHER WINNING SEASON: Indiana has assured itself of its 29th consecutive winning season. Every Coach Knight team (28 years) at Indiana has had a winning season. During Knight's tenure in Bloomington, Indiana is the only school in the Big Ten to register an overall winning record each year. Along those same lines with 9 conference victories this year, the Hoosiers have 26 (out of 28) non-losing conference seasons under Knight.
20/20: Indiana has 22 wins which marks the 20th time in Coach Bob Knight's 28 years the team has reached this seasonal milestone. The 20th victory also gave Indiana its 1,450th all-time win. The Hoosiers have won 20 or more games in each of the last three seasons which is the first time this has happened since 1992-94. The 22 regular season victories is the most by Indiana since 1997 when IU also had 22. These two 22-win seasons are the most since 1993 when Indiana won 31.
INDIANA'S UNBEATEN STREAK CONTINUES: As there were no unbeaten teams in Division I this season, Indiana remains the last Division I basketball team to go undefeated in a season as the Hoosiers were 32-0 in 1976. This streaks has now stood for 23 years.
SLOW BIG TEN START USUALLY MEANS STRONG FINISH: During Coach Knight's tenure at Indiana, the Hoosiers started the league season 1-3 four times (including this season). IU came back from those starts to post winning seasons each year. The previous three 1-3 starts came in 1978 (finished 12-6), 1979 (10-8) and 1988 (11-7).
EXTRA TIME SETS BIG TEN RECORD: Indiana's overtime game against Illinois was its seventh of the season (IU defeated Notre Dame, Penn State and Northwestern and lost to Kentucky, Minnesota and vs. Purdue). The seven overtime games is the most IU has played in any one season in school history and sets the Big Ten record held previously by Ohio State in 1982 with six. The NCAA record for overtime games in a season is 8 held by Western Kentucky (1978), Portland (1984) and Valparaiso (1994). With the seven overtimes, including one that went to double overtime, Indiana has, in effect, played an extra game this season.

1,510 career points is the seventh-highest scoring total in Indiana history
for a three-year span.

AGAINST THE BEST: Indiana is 5-8 this season against teams that were ranked when the Hoosiers played them. Indiana defeated Utah, Temple, Purdue, Wisconsin and Iowa while losing to Syracuse, Kentucky, Iowa, Ohio State (twice), Michigan State, Minnesota and Purdue.

GET AHEAD, STAY AHEAD: This year the Hoosiers are 15-3 while leading at halftime, 6-7 when trailing and 1-0 when tied. The Hoosiers are usually good at holding onto a lead as they are 47-6 in the last 53 games in which they led at the half over the last three seasons.
HOOSIERS POST IMPRESSIVE OFFENSIVE MARKS: The Hoosiers enter the NCAA Tournament as the top scoring team in the Big Ten (league games) and second in all games. Indiana finished the regular season as the third best shooting team in the Big Ten with a percentage of 45.5% (conference games only). The Hoosiers were also third in the league in all games shooting at 46.6%.
SEASON MARKS MAKING THE GRADE: Several team marks this season have already found themselves among the all-time bests at Indiana. The following are now all in the top 10: 182 3-point field goals (tie for 4th), 490 3-point attempts (school record), 106 blocks (10th) and 242 steals (3rd, school record is 250 set in 1992).
GUYTON AND RECKER ­ IMPORTANT TO THE CAUSE: When A.J. Guyton and Luke Recker combined for 30 or more points for the Hoosiers, it is usually a good sign of success for the team. This has happened 32 times and Indiana is 26-6 in those games. The tandem combined to score 40 at Illinois and the team is now 11-1 when they have scored 40 or more in their career. They have done this eight times this season (41 vs. UAB, 44 at Notre Dame, 46 vs. Northwestern, 45 at Purdue, a career best 53 at Penn State, 45 vs. Purdue, 43 at Northwestern and 40 at Illinois). In games they haven't combined to score 30 or more the Hoosiers are 16-16.
GUYTON AND RECKER FROM 3: A.J. Guyton and Luke Recker have become the most prolific 3-point tandem in single season school history. They have now connected on 135 3's this season breaking the old mark of 122 set by Brian Evans and Neil Reed in 1996. They are also the first tandem to combine for more than 100 3-pointers in consecutive seasons (they had 113 last year). This is the first time in school history two players have accomplished this in consecutive years. Other 100+ 3-point duos include Steve Alford and Keith Smart (119, in 1987) Guyton and Neil Reed (113, in 1997); Jay Edwards and Joe Hillman (106 in 1989) and Calbert Cheaney and Greg Graham (104 in 1993). Guyton's 74 3-pointers is the fourth-highest mark in school history while Recker's total of 61 is sixth. Guyton and Recker have made 72% of the team's 3's this season (135 of 188).
INDIANA 500: Along with everything else, A.J. Guyton and Luke Recker have each scored more than 500 points this season. The last time this happened was in 1995 when Alan Henderson (now with the Atlanta Hawks) had 729 and Brian Evans (New Jersey Nets) had 538.
THE GUYTON CHRONICLES: A.J. Guyton is on the best scoring run of his career as he has reached double figures in each of the last 14 games. During this span he made the game-tying (in the first overtime) and the game-winning shots (both 3-pointers) at Penn State as he scored a career-high 33 points. He is now Indiana's most prolific 3-point shooter with career totals of 209-507. Guyton made 7 3-pointers against the Nittany Lions which tied a career-high. His 33 points was the third time in his career he has scored 30 or more. He has raised his scoring average from 13.5 to 16.3 during this 14-game span. He has averaged 19.9 points per game over the last 14 games and has shot 45% (99-220) from the field and 42.1% (45-107) from 3-point range. He has scored at least 20 points in seven of these games. His 16 3-point attempts against Penn State tied his single game school record which he set earlier this season at Ohio State. His career point total of 1,510 is 14th on the all-time list. Archie Dees is in 13th place with 1,546 points.
LEWIS' PASSING FANCY: Michael Lewis has taken a commanding team lead in assists with some recent good play. He has registered 82 assists (just 21 turnovers) in the last 12 games in which he has played (average of almost 32 minutes per game). He has also averaged 8.3 points per game during this stretch. The junior had 88 assists and just 29 turnovers in conference play (435 minutes). He has 383 career assists which is 7th on Indiana's all-time list (Steve Alford is 6th with 385).
BALANCED ATTACK BODES WELL: If the Hoosiers spread around the scoring attack they usually win. IU has won all 11 games this season when they have at least four players score in double figures.
HITTING THE CENTURY MARK: Indiana's consecutive 100+-point games vs. San Francisco and Drake was the sixth time that had happened in school history and the first time since 1993-94. The 56-point win over Drake was the second-largest victory margin in school history (65 vs. Notre Dame, 92-29, 1972). The consecutive 50-point victories was the first time that had happened in school history. It was also the 45th and 46th time a Bob Knight-led Indiana team has cracked the century mark.
LOTS OF GAMES: The 15 games Indiana played this non-conference season is the most in school history before the Big Ten season. The previous high was 14 set in 1988-89 and 1996-97). The most non-conference games Indiana has ever played in a season is 17 which occurred in 1981, 1989 and 1993. This is Indiana's 32nd game of the season. The school record for games in a season is 35 set in 1981, 1989 and 1993.
ON THE DEFENSE: The Hoosiers are holding their opponents to 68.5 points per game, the lowest opponent average on record since 1991-92 when Indiana allowed 65.8 points a game. The opponents are shooting 41.6% from the field. That is the lowest opponent field goal shooting percentage for the season since 1996-97 when IU opponents shot 42.2%.
KEY NUMBERS: The Hoosiers are 18-3 when scoring more than 70 points, 10-1 when shooting 50% or better, 11-1 when garnering more rebounds and 21-3 when shooting better than their opponents.
DOUBLE YOUR FUN: Kirk Haston took over the team lead in double-doubles with a 13-point, 13-rebound performance at Illinois which was his sixth of the season (third best total in the league). William Gladness is next with five (fourth best total). Luke Recker had 10 points and 10 assists vs. San Francisco and had his second of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds at Penn State. Michael Lewis registered one with season-highs of 14 points and 11 assists vs. Northwestern. Lynn Washington had his first career double with 12 points and 10 rebounds at Purdue. Larry Richardson had his first career double with 18 points and 12 rebounds vs. Michigan.
RECORDS THIS SEASON: Indiana attempted a school record 31 3-pointers at Penn State. Indiana's 12 blocks vs. San Francisco is the most in school history (old mark was 11 set twice before). Indiana's 88.9% 3-point field goal percentage vs. San Francisco tied the school record set once before. Indiana's 20 steals vs. Drake is a school record (old mark was 19 set twice before). Indiana's 29 assists vs. San Francisco was the second highest single game total in school history (30 vs. Northwestern, 1981). Indiana's 66.7% field goal percentage vs. San Francisco (40-60) tied for the eighth-highest mark in school history (set five previous times).
WINS AND LOSSES: There have been some interesting differences in the 22 wins and 10 losses. IU has shot 48.2% in the wins but just 43.1% in the losses. The Hoosiers have also shot 39.9% in the victories and just 30.8% in the losses from 3-point range. IU's rebounding margin is +1.4 in the wins but in the losses it drops to -7.6. The Hoosiers also average 25.1 free throw attempts in the wins and just 15.3 in the losses. In the seven conference losses, IU allowed 77.1 ppg, shot 58.3% from the foul line and averaged just 66.9 points a game.
FROM THE FIELD: The Hoosiers have shot better than 50% in just one of the last seven games (54.2% vs. Iowa on Feb. 27). Indiana is 10-1 this season when shooting better than 50%. Indiana's longest sub-50% stretch of the season has been six games (Kansas State through Kentucky). Indiana comes into tonight's game shooting 46.6%. Shooting better than their opponents is a good sign of success for the Hoosiers. This year they are 1-3 when doing this and over the last two years are 41-7.
LONG RANGERS: The Hoosiers have made 188 3-pointer this season which is the second-highest mark in school history. The Hoosiers 513 attempts is a school record. IU made an average of 5.9 per game but has averaged 7 3-pointers over the last three games. The attempts per game are also up over this span as they have averaged 20.7 a game compared to the season's average of 16.1 a contest. Indiana made 7 of 14 3's vs. Iowa which was just the second time in conference play they had shot at least 50% from long range. The Hoosiers made 10 (ties for third-highest total in school history) of 31 (school record) at Penn State which were both season highs. For the season, IU has shot at least 40% 12 times. IU has been under 36% from long range 15 times this season.
CHARITY TOSSES: Indiana has been getting to the foul line in recent games as they have gone at least 21 times in each of the last four games (longest such stretch of the season is five games). During this span the Hoosiers have made 97 of 127 (76.4%). The 127 attempts over the last four games is 18% of IU's season's total. This stretch includes a season-high 90.6% (29-32) effort vs. Iowa. IU shot 70% or better only six times in conference play and just 13 times all season (but in four of the last six games). The Hoosiers are shooting just 69.1% from the line. Over the years one of Indiana's keys to success has been making more free throws than its opponents attempt. This year IU has made 488 but the opponents have attempted 561.
BOARD REPORT: Rebounding has been a problem for the Hoosiers all season but not like the Illinois game where the Hoosiers were outrebounded by a 51-26 count. The 51 rebounds by Illinois was an opponents season-high while the 26 tied a season-low for the Hoosiers. Indiana was outrebounded in conference play 11 times and went 5-6 in those games. Overall, IU was outrebounded 20 times and went 11-9 in those games. When the Hoosiers did crash the boards they won. IU was 11-1 in games where they won the battle of the boards. IU's rebounding margin in league play was -0.5 per game.
ASSIST ANGLE: The Hoosiers lead the league in assists at 16.5 per game. In fact, Indiana is one of only two teams (Michigan State is the other) to have register at least 500 assists this season. IU has posted at least 20 assists six times this season. Indiana has tallied more assists than their opponents 17 times. The Hoosiers have had only 11 games where they have had more turnovers than assists.
TURNOVER TALE: The Hoosiers are 15-5 when they commit the same or less number of turnovers as their opponent. IU is second in the league in assist/turnover ratio at 1.12. The season average is 14.7 (15.3 last season). The Hoosiers have had had less than 15 turnovers in eight league games after doing so in 10 non-conference games. IU ran that total to 19 times with just 13 miscues vs. Illinois. That effort came after an average of 21.5 in the two previous games.
A STEAL OF A TIME: Indiana has 247 steals (7.8 per game). However, the Hoosiers have not tallied more than 7 in any of the last 14 games. Indiana has had 10 games in which it has registered at least 9 steals and eight games in double figures. The Hoosiers set a school record with 20 vs. Drake. The Hoosiers were sixth in the league with their season's total . The school record for a season is 250 set in 1992.
ON THE DEFENSE: The Hoosiers have held 13 opponents under 40% from the field this year after doing so only 8 times all of last season. However, in 12 league games the opponent shot better than 40%. The Hoosiers went through one stretch this season where they allowed no more than 10 field goals in six of seven consecutive halves (second half of Indiana State game through Utah game). Indiana has also allowed single figures in field goals in 13 halves. IU's opponents come into tonight's game shooting 41.6% from the field. IU's opponents shot 46.8% in the losses but that improved to 39.4%. Perhaps where the opponents hurt the Hoosiers more was at the 3-point line. In the losses they shot 38.4% but in the wins just 32.8%.
POINT PRODUCTION: The Hoosiers averaged 74.9 points per game overall which is the second best mark in the conference. IU also averaged 79 ppg in the wins and just 65.8 in the losses and in conference wins 77.7 ppg in but just 66.9 ppg in the losses. The Hoosiers scored 67 points in the second half vs. USF which was more points than the team has scored in eight games this season. Indiana has managed to score 80 or more points 10 times this season. When the Hoosiers do score 80 or more points it usually means a victory. During Coach Knight's 28 years the Hoosiers are 309-20 when scoring 80 or more, 144-4 when scoring 90 or more and 46 0 when scoring 100 or more points.
BLOCK PARTY: Indiana has had 24 blocks in the last five games (4.8) which is above is above its season's average of 3.4 per game. IU had 12 blocks vs. USF which was only the seventh time in school history an Indiana team has registered double figures in blocks. Kirk Haston leads the team with 27. The Hoosiers averaged 3.9 a year ago.
BIG WINNERS: When the Hoosiers win they usually have a tendency to win big. Last season they won 13 games by 11 or more points and 19 contests by 6 or more points. This season the margin of victory stands at 14.3 points per game. However, Indiana is 7-2 this season in games decided by 5 points or less and 13-4 in games decided by 10 points or less
DID YOU KNOW? that over the last nine years the Hoosiers have led the Big Ten in scoring? During this span IU has averaged 79 points per game in conference play and have finished in the top half of the league in scoring every season. This year Indiana finished the regular season as the top scoring team in the conference.
ONE OF THE NATION'S BEST: During the 1990's Indiana has been one of the top teams in college basketball. The Hoosiers have won 214 games this decade which makes them one of only 13 teams to have won 200 or more games during this span.
HOOSIERS IN ASSEMBLY HALL: The Hoosiers are 340-47 (.878) in Assembly Hall including a 204-40 (.836) record in Big Ten games. Since the beginning of the 1990-91 season the Hoosiers are 106-14 (.883) in Assembly Hall. Indiana is also 66-27 (.709) vs. ranked teams in the building.
KNIGHT PICKED HIGH IN COACHES POLL: A national magazine polled more than 100 college coaches this season and asked the question, If you could go to only one coaching clinic, whose would it be and why? Indiana head coach Bob Knight was third in the ballotting.
