HOOSIERS TO PLAY FOR BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIP
Win streak is now at nine
East Lansing, Mich.--The Indiana Women's Water Polo team won all three of its matches today at the Big Ten Tournament and will play Michigan for the Big Ten Championship tomorrow at 12:15 (EDT).
Indiana (17-12) notched wins over Illinois 9-3, Michigan State 9-3 and Northwestern 7-1 to reach the championship game for the second straight year. The Hoosiers extended their winning streak to a school-record nine games and have won 16 of their last 22 matches after a 1-6 start.
Molly Fonner scored three times, assisted on three others and swiped eight more in helping the Hoosiers overcome a major scare against Illinois. The Illini led 2-0 at the half and 3-2 going into the fourth until Indiana exploded for seven fourth period goals. Sheri Fagley, Deb Simone and Kristin Carpenter each added two goals of their own.
Against Michigan State, the Hoosiers trailed after the first period but scored three in the second to take the lead for good. Sophomore Kara Fellerhoff scored a career-high four goals to go along with four steals. Goalie Kirsten Mayberry had two assists as Indiana beat MSU for the fourth time this season.
In the semifinals against Northwestern, Simone scored twice and swiped seven balls while Fonner chipped in with three goals to put the Hoosiers through to tomorrow's championship game.
In last year's Big Ten Championship game, the Hoosiers lost to Michigan 6-3.
