Indiana loses to Michigan for third time this season
East Lansing, Mich.--The Indiana Women's Water Polo team fell to Michigan 12-4 in the Big Ten Championship game to finish second in the Big Ten.
Indiana (17-13) saw its school record nine match winning streak come to an end as the Wolverines built a 5-1 halftime lead and never looked back.
The Hoosiers were not without scoring opportunities as they fired up 28 shots and forced 13 turnovers while only committing 11. The Indiana goalkeepers, Kirsten Mayberry and Louanne Hovater, stopped only 3 of 15 shots as Michigan scored five goals in both the second and third periods.
Coach Barry King said, "Out in the pool we created all the opportunities that we needed but we didn't finish because we were pressing. We didn't have that same relaxation as last week because we didn't have that early lead."
Sophomore driver Deb Simone was named Tournament MVP while Molly Fonner and Kristin Carpenter joined her on the All-Big Ten first team. Simone scored seven goals, dished out six assists and swiped 24 balls to earn first team honors for the second straight year. Sheri Fagley earned second team honors while Kirsten Mayberry and Kara Fellerhoff earned honorable mention honors.
The Hoosiers are back in action this weekend for the Midwest Regional Finals at the Canhum Natatorium in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
