HOOSIERS TO PLAY FOR MIDWEST REGIONAL TITLE
Indiana clinches berth to National Championships
Ann Arbor, Mich.--The Indiana Women's Water Polo team won its first four matches at the Midwest Regional Finals to earn its third straight trip to the National Collegiate Water Polo Championships.
Indiana (21-13) will play Michigan for the regional championship tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. (EDT). Indiana won last year's regional title over Michigan, 5-4, in Bloomington.
Indiana defeated Notre Dame 10-2, Michigan State 4-2 and Miami of Ohio 11-2 to reach the championship game. Indiana also took care of Wisconsin 13-2 yesterday in their tournament opener.
Kara Fellerhoff led the way against Notre Dame with two goals, three assists and four steals as the Hoosiers dispatched the Irish. Eight different players scored for Indiana and Kristin Carpenter chipped in three goals. Indiana is 13-1 this season when the Ann Arbor native scores two or more goals.
The Hoosiers then beat Michigan State for the fifth time this season as Sheri Fagley fired in two goals and Simone swiped five balls.
In the semifinals, with a trip to Nationals on the line, Indiana took care of business against Miami of Ohio. Indiana led 6-1 at the half and never looked back. Carpenter, Kelly McKay and Kate Smith led Indiana with two goals a piece.
The trip to the National Championships will be Indiana's fourth straight, two of those coming in 1996 and 1997 when Indiana participated at the club level. Their best finish was in 1996 when they took fifth in Division II.
