WHITE DEFEATS RED IN IU SPRING GAME, 33-28
Bloomington, Ind. -- Bloomington, Ind. -- The Indiana University football team held its annual Red-White Spring Game today before approximately 2,000 fans at the Mellencamp Pavilion on the Bloomington campus. The game was moved indoors because of inclement weather. All offensive series began at the opponent's 35-yard line. Junior wide receiver Versie Gaddis caught a 35-yard pass from redshirt freshman quarterback Tommy Jones with less than 1:00 remaining in the fourth quarter to take the lead. The White team will eat steak at tomorrow's team dinner while the Red team will eat "Beanies and Weenies."
"Even though the weather didn't cooperate and we had to come indoors, I thought the guys played well," said head coach Cam Cameron. "I thought today the guys responded. It was exciting at the end. We asked the staff to divide the teams as equally as they could and it looks like they got that done. If you do that, the game should be pretty close."
The red team took an early 14-0 lead in the first quarter on a 9-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Antwaan Randle El to sophomore wide receiver Derin Graham and a 25-yard run by sophomore running back Levron Williams. The red held a 28-19 lead late in the third quarter before Gaddis scored the first of his two fourth-quarter touchdowns, this one a 23-yard reception from Jones.
"After my injury I kind of slowed down and I wanted to come out and have a good year," said Gaddis. "I was having a bad day. Really, the whole offense was having a bad day and I just thought we needed a lift. We all just got together and said that we weren't going to lose."
Said Randle El, "I feel more comfortable and more confident. With Wally (Adewale Ogunleye) and (Mike) McGrath on the other side, and my brother when he comes back, it gives you the security that you can go out and play well."
